Joe Sacco was born in Malta and graduated from the University of Oregon with a degree in journalism. He is the author of Palestine and Safe Area Gorazde. He lives in Portland, Oregon, where he is working on his next graphic novel, about the Gaza Strip.

This volume should be bought and read with Sacco's "Safe Area Gorazde." It is really a companion piece that should be read after the aforementioned book.Sacco is a true journalist, and his drawings bring the scenes and characters vividly to life. This is a collection of three stories: The Fixer, Soba and Christmas with Karadzic. The last story is about how Joe and 2 other journalists set out to see Radovan Karadzic, a war criminal, at a Christmas service and interview him for 6 minutes.If and when I ever teach a college course on comics, I will make this an extra credit book (Safe Area Gorazde and Palestine would be required).
I opened the book and the pages came out. The rubber glue did not hold the pages so now loose leafs are coming out as I read it. Very bummed out!
A darkly violent Fellinesque riff on the Bosnian war, this "graphic novel," by Joe Sacco is a fast read, a noirish examination of the relationship between a parachute journalist and the necessary local 'fixer' who serves as a local contact and makes it possible for the journalist to drop into a foriegn country and get a story. In this case, the local turns out to be a questionable ex-fighter whose war stories are both more and less true than appearances indicate. The fixer, a troubled ex-fighter scorned by his former comrades and spurned because of his ethnic background, is a terrific character, evocative of both the unresolved issues behind the Balkan wars as well as the marginalized citizens anywhere made exiles in their own land.
All three stories in this volume, reports from the former Yugoslavia during its recent conflicts, are fascinating, fast-moving, sobering, and darkly humorous.
