I purchased this based on the recommendation of one of the Black Belts from a smaller plant at my company. He has been successfully implementing these procedures for quite a few months now, and has shown some significant results. I'm impressed, and I think Dr. Suri is on the right path with this. Though it is somewhat dismissive of Lean / Six Sigma as methodologies, I do see them as complimentary to QRM, along with ToC and other methods. It's all about taking the best aspects of each and employing them in a successful manner.Pros:- Covers not only the manufacturing side (the plant), but goes into detail on the office as well, where we find significant lead time created in the processes- Works extremely well in a job shop environment. We're largely high variation, low volume products, almost one-off in most cases, and QRM provides an excellent fit.- The discussions of the response time spiral are spot on. We fall victim to this constantly. It's all about creating flexible environments focused on delivering proper value (sounds a bit like Lean, eh?)Cons:- Too much negative commentary on "competing" methodologies, where any of us with some experience realize that each has its good and bad, and to not trust the salesmen of any one methodOverall, it's an excellent book, though a dry and academic read, and should be seriously investigated by any manufacturing manager, operations person, quality, or continuous improvement implementer.
Purchased this book after recommendation from my professor. Worth the investment. Like the visual examples of before and after mistake proofing. Have already used couple of examples at work. Also shared the book with my manger and he also likes it and found ideas in it for mistake proofing milling fixtures.
The cartoons at the beginning explain the concepts of source inspection and mistake-proofing devices. It is quite clear and easy to follow. Then, 240 examples of such devices are detailed one by one (with before and after view). It is well indexed, so that practitioners can review the examples that are close to a situation they encounter. If I may criticise this book, I would point to the over-representation of metal-working processes. And an update, including new technologies, would be an excellent idea.
I bought this book, because my boss at work wanted to implement more poka-yoke ideas in our factory, and I was hoping the book would give us some ideas. It has some cool sketches, but not many of them applied to our air conditioner factory. I was a little disappointed. I think the book is good to introduce someone to the concept of poka-yoke, but it will not necessarily illustrate a solution to your specific manufacturing defects.
As a former manager of strategic planning, now returned to the manufacturing side, I consider this book to be one of the most important I have read over the past several years. What I am seeing in manufacturing is that the cookie cutter products, high tech or not, are moving to either Asia or Mexico. The remaining products are being sold to customers who require a high level of customization on a very short lead time. The author has developed a system to accomplish this. He focuses not just on the nuts and bolts of the shop floor, but also on streamlining the support systems needed to achieve this level of service. If you are in high level manufacturing or corporate management, you need to read this book. If you are at a lower level, you will still be exposed to many ideas which you can incorporate into improving your service, to both internal and external customers, and reducing your lead times. I think it ranks right up there with The Goal as one of the most important business books written in the era of modern manufacturing.
Fue un regalo.
The book was not helpful to me since the application I was working with was a chemical process and not a machined or molded shape. This is not a criticism of the book but of the brief critique describing the content
Poka-Yoke is a great book. The volume is filled with some very practical examples across the manufacturing sector. I have used this book many times to stimulate myself and others on ways to come up with mistake-proofing an application where human error is inevitable. I would highly recommend this book be on the shelf of every manufacturing engineer, every process engineer, and every maintenance engineer who deals with ways to make processes free from inherent errors.Poka-Yoke: Improving Product Quality by Preventing Defects
