ncient and modern sources, Watts treats the Chinese philosophy of Tao in much the same way as he did Zen Buddhism in his classic The Way of Zen. Critics agree that this last work stands as a perfect monument to the life and literature of Alan Watts.

The word of Alan never fails to disappoint. His ability to turn inexplicably complex ideas into something a 5 year old can understand is what separates his philosophical style from the rest, and is what makes this book so unique. Sure, one cannot fully name or explain the Tao, but Alan comes about as close as one could.I've had people ask me if this book was "actionable". That is to say, did it actually influence my judgment and decision making. The answer is a resounding yes. The tenants and principles of Taoism described in The Watercourse Way provide a very concrete framework to view the world through.Ultimately: choose nature, be patient, capture essence, and don't forget to keep life playful :)

Though he didn't get to finish it, it is finished enough to give an excellent understanding of the Tao as a philosophy (or non-philosophy, however one may see it), along with the added notion, the paradox, "if you can describe it, it is not the Tao".

Alan Watts is a true master of bringing the Eastern thought into the Western sphere of thinking. Much like "Spirit of Zen", Watts uses his wording and expressions, as well as citing sources from the tradition, to gently introduce Taoism to one unfamiliar with the philosophy/religion/lifestyle. With beautiful Chinese calligraphy, history, and philosophy, Watts skillfully expresses the mystical and natural way of the Tao.While it is truly impossible to describe what is beyond description, beyond thought or concepts ("The Dao that can be spoked of is not the true Tao.. from the Tao te Ching), Watts does a fine job.

Alan Watts was one of the most enlightened minds of the twentieth century, and Tao: The Watercourse Way is the culmination of that enlightenment. The book is scholarly without being stuffy... in fact... quite to the contrary as this book is fun because you can feel the joy in the soul of the author in every word.

This book gave me a major shift in my life, in my understanding of Eastern wisdom. I so feel in love with the work of Alan in this book! He is a master at helping communicate Eastern ideas to Western raised people. This is his final and I think best book!

I read this years ago.Liked it then.Still like it.Watts is probably the best westerner to interpret Eastern thought, at least the Tao.If you want to get a good feel for Taoist things in a compact format this is the place.Older but still very relevant.

So good I am going to read it twice more. There is a lot of deep meaning in this work that one must come back to it again to gain the benefit of the book and knowledge within.

All-time favorite, served for the first research paper I ever wrote. I think my enthusiasm got me an A.

ONCE A CIGAR MAKER: Men, Women, and Work Culture in American Cigar Factories, 1900-1919 (Working Class in American History), by Patricia A. Cooper

Review

"In her admirably researched Once a Cigarmaker, Patricia Cooper weaves a fascinating tale about the three-way relationship that developed between new technology in the cigarmaking industry, and its impact on both the older generation of skilled, male cigarmakers, and on the unskilled immigrant women who replaced them as the major labor force in the trade after the First World War. . . . [This book pushes] back the boundaries of our knowledge at the interface between institutional labor history, cultural analysis, and the social history of work in a fresh and original way."--Reviews in American History"Among the best studies we have to date of shop-floor work traditions for both men and women. It is a powerful analysis of work, gender, and the union movement that insightfully moves us beyond simplifications about craft union elitism and sexism."--Journal of Social History"Subtle, incisive, and original, Once a Cigarmaker has broken new ground at the intersection of business, labor, and women's history."--Business History Review  "This fine study, spiced with humor rare in social history, provides a provocative argument and good reading."--Oral History Review

Disappointing. I thought this would be the story of the cigar makers who in the first few decades of the 20th century worked in small shops and factories throughout the United States. I expected to hear their individual and collective stories, the art of their work. But this book, very academic in tone, told very little of their story, concentrating mainly on labor issues, the plight of women in the cigar factories, and the life of the cigar makers union. You really don't get much of the personal stories of the individuals. This book seemed very well researched, and there were some very interesting facts - who knew that there were once thousands of cigar factories throughout the United States? - but it didn't captivate me at all, and by the end of the first quarter of the book I kind of stopped caring. (Though I did finish it.)

This is a great book, but you have the wrong description posted. The book is about the cigar industry, not the movie industry.

I came here to defend this book from James S's unfair review. I read this book years ago and found it to be engaging and informative. First off the book was published by an academic press and not a commercial press so I found James S.'s criticisms baffling. He says it is "very academic in tone, told very little of their story, concentrating mainly on labor issues, the plight of women in the cigar factories, and the life of the cigar makers union. You really don't get much of the personal stories of the individuals." Hello - This book is not an oral history and never claims to be. It is one book in a large series called Working Class in American History. It is as though James is mainly criticizing the book because it is not the book he wanted it to be instead of understanding the book on its own terms.

I read this book very quickly. The story first captures your attention, then ultimately, your heart. The final outcome is known before you lay eyes on the first page, yet the way it all plays out is riveting. Days later, I still can't stop thinking about it. It is not magical prose that rolls off the pages. The words are plain and clear. Easy to read yet difficult to absorb, especially since I work in healthcare. This is a tragic story, interspersed with beauty and human kindness, told by the one who was closest to it. The words flow in such a way that you feel the confusion, the mounting tension, the frustration and ultimately, the love. Life on Life's terms. It can all change in the blink of an eye. Thank you, Rod, for sharing your story.

I found the book to be very fast paced, which surprised me. I felt I was on the adventure too. I can't believe all the complications, poor hospital, flat tires, not understanding the language, and confusion. I would surely have lost my mind. Being a nurse, my first thought also was a brain aneurysm. The heart theory also makes sense. I had a best friend in grade school who's mother was a teacher and scout leader. When we were in fifth grade, her mother collapsed at an out of town teacher conference. This book brought me back there. As a fellow fifth grader and friend, I never asked her who told her and how she remembers feeling. I remember meeting by a path in the street, not really talking, just riding our bikes around in circles. To this day I hope it was enough. Thanks for sharing this very personal account of your experience.

Valerie will never be forgotten thanks to the incredibly heart wrenching account that RodDescribed with such emotion you felt like you were there with him and the others. It was a book I both didn't want to put down, but also felt emotional turmoil continuing. His writing style made a very tragic and horrifying event engaging and it kept me wanting to continue to be drawn into his reality as it was at that time. There is no doubt that writing this book had to be some measure of therapeutic for Rod.The book/story reminds me to be grateful every day for what I have, includingPeople that are important to me, as well as the access to health care that sometimesGets taken for granted.I don't think is possible to read this beautifully well written story without being moved emotionally.

Beautifully poignant! I felt I was with Rod on his trip. Everything is so wonderfully descriptive.Heartbreaking, powerful book. I didn't want it to end. I just want to sit down with Rod and haveconversations. God bless Rod and his family.

Oh my goodness. Read it twice in less than a week! Such a beautiful story about a tragic event. My husband also read it and shed more than a few tears. I highly recommend. It even has questions at the end that would be great for book clubs. Rod certainly opened his heart to share this story! No wonder it took years to write.

An emotional true story of a situation so many people could find themselves in. I've kissed my kids goodbye and set out eagerly on a trip more than once, never giving much serious thought on what could go wrong or how lives could change if I or my spouse didn't return. Once I started reading, other than taking a few breaks to gather myself, I couldn't put it down. It serves as a reminder to cherish your loved ones and enjoy life. This story is a worthwhile read!!

I finished this book quickly. It was unbelievable what Rod had to go through, initially in his attempt to get the medical care needed for his wife and then later to try to get her back home. I found myself re-reading pages over and over to try to imagine what he was going through.

It was a beautifully written book about a tragic situation. It's an easy fast read about a complex situation. It gives us great insight to third world medical clinics/hospitals and skilled (or unskilled) personnel. It also give you an accurate portrayal of the nightmarish logistics of traveling in a remote part of a country, in an emergency. It gives you great appreciation for our country and all that we take for granted. I highly recommend it. You won't be able to put the book down, once you start reading it.
