If you are not sure your children are right with God and going to see Jesus one day and are free "from a devil's hell"; don't buy them something, don't do anything to win their favor (YET). Read/study/pray through (and fast) this book and hopefully they have the "fear of the LORD in them" and follow the 10 commandments which Jesus fulfilled (did not abolish according to Galatians). Yes, it is your responsibility to do all that is in your power to do to win your children, small or full grown adult to the loving Lord that we have and must give an accounting do on judgment day (yes, we will all be judged eventually for the deeds "done in the body". Ray C. is one of the better speakers (along with Kirk Cameron) on winning men and women to Jesus Christ for eternity. Also see the "Way of the Master" on youtube.com and get the $1,000,000 gospel tracts which a guy at my church handed out 150 in about 1 1/2 hours downtown. they look real.
I really enjoyed this book but was a little disappointed about the part that said your children must go to Christian school. I agree that it's not preferred that they go to public, but I would have to go back to work full time in order for them to attend Christian school and maybe not even then would we be able to afford it for three kids. I absolutely agree that we are our childrens best teacher but Christian school or homeschooling is not an option for everyone. I am a product of public schooling and yet Jesus is my cornerstone. I totally agree we want to minimize our childrens exposure to ungodly things, but we can still lead our children to a deep faith even if they are attending public school.Nothing will bring me great joy then seeing my children walk with the Lord. If nothing else, this book reminds parents how there is nothing more important that they can do for their children then to teach and lead by example what a deep and abiding faith means and the importance of it.
What brought me to Ray Comfort was his no-compromise walk, his passion for the lost, and faithfulness. I also couldn't help but notice he had three grown children who did not seem to rebel against their upbringing. That brought me to this book. I had already consumed a few popular parenting books, among them "Shepherding a Child's Heart", "First Time Mom", James Dobson. Yet, this book would be my choice if I had to narrow it down to one. I was pretty discouraged at the time I found this book. I was beginning to buy our post-modern lie that teaching God's fear and judgment was legalism, that my kids would grow to resentment me, therefore resenting my faith. Ray lays out simple and practical methods to instill "The Fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom", to "train up a child in the way they should go." If your goal is to raise children that will be in heaven- this is one of the best tools to have in your tool belt!
A wonderful book for Christian parents and it brings up an extremely important concern. Many people remember that as children, they walked a church aisle, were baptized or sprinkled or raised their hand in a meeting to say they "invited Jesus into their heart". Unfortunately, they were sometimes too young to understand the commitment they were making. They may not have had further training in understanding that the genuine experience of "being born again" involves totally turning our will over to God's will. Christianity simply isn't a matter of 'believing all the truths about Jesus being the Son of God who died for our sins', The Bible says that "the demons believe and tremble". I'm not talking about a 'works' salvation where one must 'earn' his or her salvation. However, this book is consistent with Scripture when it reminds parents that the true Salvation experience involves more than just saying, "I believe & I invite Jesus into my heart". I highly recommend this book.
I have read, listened and watched Ray Comfort for well over a decade now. He is the real-deal, honest and true Christian believer in the purest sense of the definition. He is not perfect and readily admits it but his sensitivity, consistency and creativity is like no other person's characteristics I have ever met or heard about. This book made me laugh and cry, it inspired and enlightened me and is one I regularly recommend to any new parent to help them bring up their children in the nurture and admonition of the Lord.
