If You Could Be Mine: A Novel, by Sara Farizan

From School Library Journal

Gr 9 Up-In this terrific debut novel, readers meet Sahar, a 17-year-old student who lives in Tehran. She is smart and ambitious, and she has a secret that could get her arrested or even killed; she is a lesbian and is in love with her best friend. When Nasrin's parents arrange for her to marry a young male doctor, Sahar knows that she and Nasrin will no longer be able to be with each other. When desperate Sahar meets transsexual Parveen at a party given by her gay cousin, she thinks she sees a way to be with Nasrin. In Iran, it is not illegal to be transsexual, as it is to be gay or lesbian, and the state will even pay for sex reassignment surgery because it is seen as a necessary medical procedure. Sahar pursues sex reassignment, dreaming of marrying Nasrin even though she knows in her heart that she doesn't really want to become a man. As Nasrin's wedding approaches, Sahar realizes its inevitability and must decide what she is going to do. Farizan's portrayal of Sahar and her predicament is sensitive and heartbreaking. Even less-sympathetic characters, such as Nasrin and her parents, are portrayed in a nuanced manner; in the culture Farizan depicts, the girls' fears that their romantic relationship will become known are realistic and understandable. Rich with details of life in contemporary Iran, this is a GLBTQ story that we haven't seen before in YA fiction. Highly recommended.-Kathleen E. From Booklist

*Starred Review* Teens Sahar and Nasrin have loved each other since they were young girls, but homosexuality is a crime in Iran, and the two girls could be severely punished, even executed, for their romantic love for one another. When an arranged marriage for Nasrin threatens the girls’ secret relationship, Sahar vows to take action, but what can she do? Desperate, she decides to have sex-reassignment surgery to become a man so that she can marry her friend. Surprisingly, such surgery is legal in Iran and even paid for, at least in part, by the government, and Sahar also has the caring support of a transsexual friend. Still, will she be able to follow through, and, if not, what will the future hold for the two devoted friends? Farizan’s first novel is an accomplished and compassionate look at a heartbreaking situation and the possibility of an unlikely but plausible solution. Throughout, the author presents a groundbreaking, powerful depiction of gay and transsexual life in Iran and its similarities to and differences from that of the West. An intimate look at life in modern-day Iran and its surprising Westernization, even though much of this culture is clandestine. Grades 10-12. --Michael Cart

While one of the main reasons I picked this book up was for the LGBT factor, I found that my most favorite part of it was learning more about Iran and the people. I actually felt like I was immersed in life there and while it could have gone deeper and we could have seen more, I felt like it was just the right amount for this book. It wasn't too much to take in, especially since it's just part of the story. We see the laws and how things work just through Sahar's life and her comments. For example, when she got on the bus she said women have to sit in the back while the men are in the front, but in this case it wasn't actually a complaint, she said it was a blessing and commented on something along the lines of at least no men can grope her on a crowded bus (it was actually a little different, because Sahar is slightly crass at times, and says things very bluntly). In the book we get to see different things, from her wealthy friend Nasrin's home and family, to her cousin Ali and his underground crew of gays, lesbians, transgenders, etc. There was variety and I appreciated that. I found that I was actually surprised at some things. One thing was that Western culture has permeated the country even though so much of it is illegal. People smuggle pretty much anything and everything into the country from illegal movies to alcohol. They have illegal satellites to watch television they aren't suppose to watch. It kind of surprised me at how much it was the 'norm' to do this. I also loved just learning a little about the culture. This wasn't something that was delved into very much, but from the meals she cooked, to the clothing they wore, it was all fascinating to me. I think it's important for stories like this to reach our teens.I really enjoyed Sahar a lot. She had a great voice and was so easy to 'get'. I understood her personality really well. She was blunt and honest, but held her tongue (just barely) when she really needed to. I felt like she was a bit blinded by her love for Nasrin though and this was sort of her downfall. She decides she needs to have a sex change so she can marry Nasrin, but Nasrin is already engaged to a guy and they are to be married very soon. When people try to talk sense into Sahar she refuses to listen. She feels this is her only option. While I 'get' this, it was slightly frustrating to read. But this is her journey, she has to find it inside herself to do the right thing. I do like that it was talked about, the difference in just being gay/lesbian and actually feeling like you are trapped in the wrong body and should be the opposite sex. Because being gay doesn't mean that you are trapped as the wrong sex, and some people may not really understand that.Nasrin was a character I had mixed feelings about. She's been spoiled her whole life and maybe doesn't appreciate Sahar as much as she should, but it's clear she does love her. I understand her personality and who she is and it's not really a negative to the story, but I didn't love her. Ali is Sahar's cousin and he's gay and actually flaunts it somewhat. He is a very fun character and I would love to read a book all about him. It would be SO fun! But I also want to see his HEA. I also loved Sahar's father. There's a bit of trouble between them since he's been in mourning for so long and has forgotten to live and love and so Sahar and he have a few things to work through. I enjoyed this aspect of the book and am so happy she has a kind and gentle father in a country where men can do so much harm to women if they choose. This is a short book that I cruised through in only a couple hours. It was hard to put down just because I was enjoying it so much. This book does have some bad language and talks about mature themes like sex and some descriptions regarding having a sex change. I'm not sure I would say it's for mature readers only, but be cautioned that there are some mature themes.I'm very glad I read this book and I really hope that more consider reading it. I think it should be in every library.

In If You Could Be Mine, Sara Farizan has opened quite a window. Through it, teen readers see the oppressive world of being gay in present day Iran. But the picture Farizan paints is one that reflects a global plight that many gay teens endure. From brutally oppressive nations to more enlightened ones—even our own United States of America—gays face opposition. They are assailed, accosted, looked down upon, despised, told they are sick, and yes, forbidden to be who God made them. Farizan’s Sahar is very much in love with her lifelong friend Nazrin. The feeling is mutual, but when Nazrin’s marriage is announced, Sahar tumbles into despair, leading her to consider alternatives that will most probably never be viable solutions. We feel Sahar’s pain, we feel her despair, and we want to shout at her, tell her that she is being foolish. But teens can be foolish—it’s in their nature. So we go along on this ride, hoping that author Farizan will eventually lead Sahar out of her quagmire and into a path that will work for her. Many of the loudest shouting readers will be exclaiming, “Leave Iran!” But, whether stuck in the gloomy restraints of Iran or in an unaccepting town in America, leaving your home, your family, is usually not an option. Far too many gay teens are living on the streets because they chose that option, and we know they need our love and understanding, yet what was supposed to be their “support group” failed them and led them to flee. Farizan explores that option for Sahar, as well as a few others, and gay teen readers will benefit from it. But most of all, all readers, teen or otherwise, will benefit from this sensitive exploration of what it is like to be gay, and what it is like to be gay in Iran.

If You Could Be Mine left me gasping. The strength, the injustice, the love!Sahar and Nasrin are in love. They live in Iran, and are girls. In Iran, lesbianism is illegal. Sahar remembers seeing men hung in Tehran as a child. Being gay isn't just frowned upon or judged, it's something you could die for. The options available aren't very appealing. Run from the country, become an exhile, and hope to get to Turkey where many LGBTQ individuals are granted asylum. Live with the constant fear of being discovered. Or take the drastic route of undergoing a sex change operation, despite not being transsexual. When Nasrin announces her engagement to Reza, the older, smart, handsome medical student her parents choose for her, Sahar falls deep into depression and the fantasy that she can change her fate. Will she undergo a drastic surgery to keep the woman she loves from marrying another? Many have made this choice, as gender re-assignment surgery is not only legal, but state funded in Iran. The characters in this books will infuriate you, entertain you, shock you and ultimately break your heart. In a world with no good solution, what's a girl in love to do?Personally, I'm not only a huge advocate of LGBTQ rights, I'm also extremely interested in the Middle East, Islam and Religious Politics. This books has everything you could ask for. Political without being impersonal, activist without being preachy, entertaining without being dismissive. The author knows her Iranian history and culture (not surprising as her parents are from Iran) and displays deep sensitivity toward the turmoil inside Sahar's heart.I was impressed by the authors ability to display some of the hypocracy of the religious police, the deep fear of discovery by the members of the LGBTQ community, and the gender issues women in the Middle East face every day.The girls are deeply in love. Usually, I find the whole romance theme predictable and boring, here that wasn't the case. Their furtive kisses, heated exchanges and frustrated arguments all read extremely true to life. They are not yet 18, still children in some ways, trying to navigate a situation many adults can't manage, let alone with the added stress of being gay in a hostile climate. They make bad choices, act insensitively and for Sahar's part, she deludes herself into thinking a sex change surgery could fix things, if you read between the lines, it's clear she knows better, but she's desperate. The secondary characters and subplots are fabulous. I loved the father and Parveen (a male to female transsexual who takes Sahar under her wing). The gay cousin, Ali, could have been a stereotypical nightmare, but instead, his boisterous behavior and underground dealings come across as sincere by products of his personality and situation.I highly recommend this book. My only complaint is that it is at times too slow and some points are over simplified, however, considering the target audience of the book the choices the author makes are appropriate. An excellent read for teenagers, geared to make them think without too much explicit anything, and full of intriguing characters. This books is definitely intended for a Western audience and written in an American voice. The content is extremely harram despite the tame descriptions. If you are interested in the situation for LGBTQ individuals in the Middle East, I highly recommend you check out "A Jihad for Love".

I've read many of the authors books and enjoyed them for what they are - action thrillers. I thought the plot was a little weak in this one in that the averted tragedy outcome was at best unlikely. Also way too much focus on concussion damage, and the issue was given a lot of hyperbole. I felt the author had performed at a higher level in prior offerings.

This was an action packed thriller with a good story line. Characters seemed almost real. Story that involved something for every reader. A mystery, alove story and a story of comraderi among warrior friends.

I love the Will Slater series. Lots of action snd highlights of his past as he battles through his fights while helping those who are in dire need of his special forces. Jason was the first series and hope he'll return soon and meet up with Will again. Thanks Matt, enjoyed it very much!

Mr. Rogers does it again. Thanks for a great read; again. You never fail with your story lines. Very appreciated and in keeping with that...I can't stop reading your novels. PS..in my next life; I want to be Jason King or Will Slater. Keep 'em coming. Highly recommend the Matt Rogers novels. Thanks again.

Action packed and over the top Will and Jason together are a force that will not allow anything to stand in their way to get their way

This book was outstanding. The characters and story flowed so perfectly that you had no trouble keeping track of all the players. The surprise in the book was great and made this one of the best Matt Rogers books. Mr Rogers, you have sure set a high standard for your next book. Recommend this author and all his heroes highly.

Jump on this fast ship to death and destruction. Double trouble with both Will Slater and Jason King. It will take both of them to survive this adventure, leaving one of them out of the business. Great read from 1st to last page. Looking forward to "The Bull", came out today. ..perfect timing.

Matt Rogers never fails to provide an action-filled read that thoroughly provides enjoyable time spent from start to finish. Once again we find Will and Jason King working together to avoid catastrophic consequences.

Davis of often described as a Black Panther Party member. While she was very active with the BPP, she joined a Communist Party youth group in high school and joined the CPUSA as an adult while she was still in graduate school. This autobiography, which she has said she did not want to write as she was too young, details not only her famous trial but also her development and awakening into the reality that capitalism has no future and the promise of communism to meet people's needs over profits. I've never seen this book on a required or suggested reading list for a Black Studies Program, but it must be. The role of radicals must be salvaged from history, and Davis' book makes its contribution to acknowledging the struggle

Great book! There were a lot of things I did not know about her. She has been through a lot, but survived it all.

Dr. Angela Davis hs lived an amazing life. She is an incredible speaker. To hear her story in her own words is worth the price of the book. I hope one day to meet her and get her to autograph the book. She is on the level of King, Jr. and Malcolm X when it comes to fighting for civil rights for ALL!!

Amazing book about an amazing woman, who while on paper is on the young side for an autobiography, has gone through more than most of us will in several lifetimes (and if you're white, never).A great real life story, wonderfully told. Thank you Angela!

A brilliantly written memoir of a time in US history that should never be forgotten. Published when Davis was in her late 20s, this book carries the immediacy of recent events and the richness of detail needed to understand the writer's experiences of the times of which she writes. Her work with various activist groups uniquely placed her to tell this story, and her depth of perspective can't be surpassed because she lived it. This *is* the real deal.

My local library doesn’t carry Angela which is a shame. It reads like a novel. She is excellent with her story telling & words. I adore her. I was fortunate to meet her last year & she signed my copy of this very book.

I love this book ! Very well written. I can hardly put it down , definite page turner from cover to cover of documented accounts of historical events of that tumultuous time that shaped our Nation penned by a Revolutionary genius Ms . Angela Davis

This woman's story was one of triumph, self-liberation and courage. I had the blessing of meeting this kind, old, revolutionary soul in my hometown a couple of weeks ago, and it had a similar effect as reading this book:A tremendous impact on how you look at the world of people around you and inspiration to be another fist that holds a candle to the oppression of the masses in this world.

From the Inside Flap

We wish we'd recognised when we were starting out that when someone in authority says "we want you to challenge us", that is the last thing they want to experience you doing. Learning the emotional intelligence capability to influence people for the common good is a worthy objective for anyone trying to make changes happen and for them to stick. The best advice either of us has ever been given is, "Recognise that it is not what people do that is most fascinating but why they do it. Through this insight you know what drives them and what opens them to influence." Much more is learned by listening to people and really paying attention to every aspect of their behaviour including the words they speak. The ability to listen to others is the most underrated skill in business... alongside the ability to hear what they mean.It is probable that the person who says the least knows the most. Everyone knows that we have two ears and one mouth but how many of us have the self-discipline to use them in that ratio?

Well designed exercises. I would have liked a chapter on identifying emotions.

Very helpful and easy to use.

Great book it really does help :)

I have yet to find a workbook that appeals to adults...especially court mandated adults. This book was OK, but not quite what I was hoping to find.

This is a more complex book than meets the eye. I thought it would be about the quite r4ecent scientific and medical investigations of the human microbiome, which increasingly looks central to human health. It is that, but this is a highly personal book that mixes health of the earth--soil--and health of a person, sort of an inside soil and outside soil, literally grounded in the authors' garden in Seattle. The book presents equal parts personal experience and hard science, which is described clearly and should be accessible to readers--both soil and human microbiomes are far, far more complex than most people appreciate. The book starts with a description of the authors' (the authors are married, and both have extensive backgrounds in science) rebuilding poor soil in their Seattle house, to make a garden. To be brief (the book describes this very well and gardeners will like it) it quickly became fertile and growth exploded, as did unanticipated populations of birds, insects and visiting mammals, all stemming from an enriched microbiota (which includes bacteria, fungi and other folks). A healthy soil has a healthy microbiota, every bit as complex as the above ground ecosystem parts; the point is that healthy soil produces healthy food--the book is explicitly advocating changes in farming. This connects with Bikle's cancer and experience. At first this doesn't seem relevant, but it gradually introduces the human microbiome in all its complexity, and its impact on health, and how manipulating it can have good consequences. See the connection between healthy soil and healthy body? Human ignorance of the microbial world has been hugely costly.Recent patterns have agriculture dousing land with pesticides, herbicides and fertilizer, building up resistance in harmful bacteria and impoverishing the soil by cropping practices. And so with dousing patients with chemicals--works wonders but may alter or kill off the microbiota and in the long term do more harm than good. This book makes a very solid case, and also notes that big pharma and agribusiness will fight it, as they always have, because they have so much to lose. Think of this book as an attempt to raise consciousness. If you read it through, your views will change, and if not a convert to the lifestyle advocated, you'll at least have to credit it as having some compelling evidence behind it.So: a healthier future will require much more awareness of microbes and taking them into account as assets in body and soil.

My education and career are oriented toward the physical sciences and engineering, and as such, I have historically little interest in or knowledge of the biological sciences, and don’t even like gardening. However, this book came to my attention about the same time that I started seeing and hearing about new findings regarding the mysterious term “biome” as it relates to the human body and the environment itself. I decided to give the book a try and was not disappointed. This is being marketed as a gardening book, which I think is not completely accurate and sells it seriously short. The authors do spend a couple dozen pages talking about their garden, what they did to rejuvenate their backyard soil, etc. For me, the best part then really begins, as the book moves on into a concise history of the development of microbiology, followed by an exquisitely detailed explanation of how microorganisms partner with both plants and humans to the mutual benefit of both.Although I am decades removed from the only biology class I ever had in high school, and have essentially no background in this area to draw on, I had no trouble at all following the explanations, and in general found them fascinating. I believe that in this respect, the text is totally accessible to the reasonably intelligent non-biologist.The book takes a wrecking bar to the common perception of the microbiological world as one that is inhabited chiefly by evil pathogens that make us ill or that kill us, and shows how the vast majority of these are actually beneficial. It explains how these work in the human immune system and in nature to fight the bad guys (the pathogens), exchange minerals and nutrients, and in general create environmental systems we are dependent on that actually cooperate with more than compete with one another. There is a very interesting discussion about vaccines, including a story about polio. Near the end of the book, the authors made what I thought was a very creative observation that described the human colon as a root turned inside out; by this point in the book, the reader will actually be able to make sense of the comparison. For any readers (especially non-biologist types like myself) desiring to learn more about this subject and the emerging science of the biome, this is a great place to start. Even though not interested in gardening should get a lot out of this book.Although not detracting from the book in general, the authors’ generally socialist politics peeps out amusingly in a few places. If these speculations could be collected separately, they might be titled “The Hidden Half of Human Motivation” since in reality, human society ALWAYS has a variety of motivations for what it collectively does. Certain perverse incentives always have and always will exist in human society.

This remarkable and fascinating book really opened my eyes about the significance of a term I had heard before, but didn't fully appreciate-- microbiome. Starting from the story of why composting makes soil healthy, the authors take us to the roots of plants to learn that plants have a way of communicating with the bacteria and fungi in the soil. In this way plants attract the microbes they need to grow and stay healthy. We also learn that modern chemical fertilizers are destroying the soil microbiome so that crops are less nutritious and the soil's ability to produce crops declines. Then we learn about the human microbiome and find that the microbes in our bodies outnumber our own cells by many times, and that our gut is an amazing system analogous to the root system in plants. Our own health is strongly affected by our microbiome, and that antibiotics must be used carefully in order not to decimate our inner allies. Indeed, our outdated view of 'germs' is leading to the rapid evolution of superbugs that can resist most antiseptics and drugs. Many chronic diseases are a consequence of poorly developed, unhealthy microbiomes. The message of this book is that much more needs to be learned about the hidden world of nature, because even though we can't see it, our lives depend on it.

The Stories of Ray Bradbury (Everyman's Library Contemporary Classics Series), by Ray Bradbury

Review

“The truth is, reading the vast new Everyman’s Library edition of The Stories of Ray Bradbury, culling through its perfectly round 100 selections (and 1,000-plus pages), stopping to wonder why it has taken 30 years for this classic collection to join the hardcover literary canon, a thought slips in repeatedly: Stephen King was thinking way too small. [“Without Ray Bradbury, there would be no Stephen King.” —Stephen King]. Without Ray Bradbury, there wouldn’t be American pop culture.            He is the Shakespeare of American geek culture, which, in effect, is American pop culture. The Waukegan-born writer is a popularizer of ideas so frequently plundered, subjects so unusual yet routinely picked at, reading The Stories of Ray Bradbury becomes a crash course in not just genre but what its modern voice sounds like.”            —Christopher Borrelli, Chicago Tribune

For no apparent reason I recently decided to re-read Fahrenheit 451 after many decades. The book literally fell apart as I was reading it, causing me to buy a new copy and this fine volume of his short stories, 100 in all from 1943 to 1980 (judging by the copyright dates). There's always a danger that stories like this show their age and certainly he reflects many of the concerns of the time, particularly the fear of nuclear war and the implications of space travel. Although some of the ideas about the habitability of Mars and other planets are clearly wrong, yet they really don't detract much from the stories as they are more about the human condition than scientific accuracy.I was expecting science fiction or fantasy stories and there are plenty of those usually with an intriguing twist ; one can see the influence on the Twilight Zone. However, there is much more than that, with tales of rural America, Ireland and even of a Cuban parrot to which Hemingway has dictated his final work. There are stories of coming of age, of marriage and of dying, all well told. Perhaps the prose can get a little flowery at times but as each story is relatively short it really is not any major issue. This Everyman edition is a really well made and produced book, nearly 1100 pages in total, even including a permanent book mark. My only gripe is that the date each story is written is not included. Perhaps this was for a specific reason but I think being able to place the work in time would have helped in some cases. With this reservation I would definitely recommend this collection.

Throughout the last 20 years I would come across something that would remind me of a story I'd read in high school ... that I could have sworn was Bradbury but I just could not figure it out... (my Sci-Fi english teacher had a mad crush on Bradbury :) so we read a lot of short stories). I finally typed some of the story I could remember into the magical google machine and found it!!! Then the hunt was on to which compilation book would be the best option, since you can't go wrong with more Bradbury, so might as well get one with a lot of other works. The story I couldn't remember the name of was The Veldt. It had elements that I kept triggering on when rereading The Martian Chronicles. SO GLAD I finally found it. Read that story as soon as I got this. Then A Sound of Thunder to further my travels down memory lane. Now I've started from the beginning to read all the stories bit by bit. There is just something about his writing style that works for me, though I cannot articulate why. I'm sure it has to do somewhat with reading it when I was young and its made an impression on me, but I like his style and his way of working in real life themes in fantastical (especially in his writing times) and scarily predictive stories. Now that I think about it, I think my aversion to 'smart' houses stems from his stories lol. Might save my life in the future. :)About the book itself - good binding, big enough that they have two different ribbons to keep your place. Definitely recommend.

The cranky Paul Theroux may be an acquired taste, but my mom and I both shared a love of travel and the writings of Theroux. I am not sure if this is my favorite of his travel journals, but I think it may be a top contender. Theroux, who lives on Cape Cod, decided he could take a train out of Boston and end up in Patagonia--the utter end of the earth, the tip of South America where Chile and Argentina meet at the point of the continent.Part of the charm of the book are the quick, sharp sketches of people Theroux meets on the way (not usually favorable) and the musings on the essence of the land he is traversing--its geography, its mood as well as the general condition of the local economy. Central America is phenomenally empoverished, down to the Stone Age level of heaps of huts and a few stray animals. His unvarnished view of the pitiable condition of these lands and their people gives you a better feeling for what life is like outside a developed nation, even Mexico, whose slums are posh compared to Nicaragua or Guatemala.South America is not well known by Americans--did you know there is a Welsh settlement in Patagonia? It's amazing to take this train trip even with such a grouchy companion as Theroux. He's a marvelous writer and like all good journal writers, doesn't spare anything, even if it makes himself look less noble.I read this before I ever traveled to Chile and then after and it really adds a lot of insight.

The book is very entertaining. But Theroux's attitude towards the people he meets along the way gradually becomes irritating. He pours scorn on the typical time-constrained tourists, for their seeming disregard for the locals and for their exclusive focus on the famous hotspots (these bring his assumptions). On the other hand, the long term travelers of the backpacking sort invite his contempt in other ways; he ridicules their seeming obsession with frugality and -again - the disinterest in interacting with the locals. All in all, it seems that of all the myriad travelers in South America, he alone has noble motives and the correct way to travel. Contrary to other commenters here, I didn't sense any humility. There is some self-criticism here and there, but I get the feeling that they are mostly for effect and to charm the reader.

Yes, he is a curmudgeon - but I still love his books. This one in particular fed into my wish to " someday" travel. I was a poor student who thought travel was only for the rich. I didn't realize you could do it cheaply - if you don't mind a few discomforts. It gave the information I needed to take journeys that expanded my world view. The book reads like a diary of his travel from Boston to Tierra del Fuego, most of the time by train. Along the way he meets both ordinary & famous people - most of whom he dislikes. At the beginning of his train trip he meets a self-centered young woman who gives him a rundown of her dietary needs and "sensitivities." She is a the first of many people who will annoy and confound him. He also manages to meet luminaries like Jorge Luis Borges. Even Borges doesn't distract him from train" schedules", breakdowns, people, and misunderstanding that - he thinks - exist only to thwart his enjoyment. He hates everyone and everything but manages to describe it all in hilarious prose.I know many people dislike his grouchy persona - they wonder why he even travels. Give him a break - he is like one of those old - fashioned uncles (at least in literature) who fill your head with wonderful images of far away places while complaining about the most trivial problems. You know he's finicky, so all you take in is the wonder of discovering new places.I will always love this book and Mr. Theroux for leading me out of small, Midwestern-town-USA. How else would I have found myself hitching a ride to Otoval market (ECUADOR) on top of a precarious truck carrying vegetables & chickens? Two Japanese sisters made the trip even more fun as we screamed & laughed all the way. A trip of a lifetime on a shoe string budget. Luckily I was young enough to ignore discomfort so that I could enjoy new vistas and people.I will always keep my worn copy of this book. I give it 5 stars for inspiration, hilarity, and practical advice.

Paul Theroux has a bitter impatience with the poverty and hardships he sees imposed (by dictators and ignorance) on people whose lives he travels through. He has a witty impatience with loud tourist louts. But he has a generous heart that he tries to keep under wraps, like the night he ran across 3 homeless boys in an alley and talked to them to hear their stories and gave them money to eat and told us, the readers, he knew they wouldnt survive. A true trip, glad to tag along in complacent safety while he faces our reality.

It's not his best work by my tastes but it is Paul Theroux's only account of traveling through North and South America. It has all the challenges of a travelogue written in the late 70s such as disparaging remarks about people of colour, endless commentary on the dilapidation of non western cities and towns but the character studies are there of the people he meets on trains and the delight is his description of time spent with Borges. It's a worthwhile read for armchair travellers eager to experience the Americas.

I enjoyed the Dark Star Safari with Paul very much and carried that level of expectation with me on this trip through the Americas. It was an unfair comparison because of Paul's history with Africa his insights there were based upon his Peace Corps experiences there. The trip through the Americas seemed to be a struggle for Paul and didn't have the historical awareness and intimate connection with the areas covered so the depth that I was hoping for was lacking.

Even though the events in this book are somewhat dated, I enjoyed reading it for the second time, motivated by my recent personal travels through Patagonia. For anyone interested in any aspect of South American history, this is a must-read.

I like this book a lot. Pigs are smarter than dogs and love to oink. PIggy, Fox, and Hippo try to go back to their home.

Incredible story with amazing illustrations!

Amazing illustrations, great storytelling.

Pig, Hippo, Fox and Van must get back to their town before the wave hits. But they’re a long way from home. Following Van’s advice for transportation leads them to some very interesting other towns. And Pig can’t help but notice things that remind him of his father in each and every one of them. He also starts to wonder about the source of the darkness that comes. The illustrations in this are amazing. The plot of this book suffers just a teensy bit from middle-book-itis. Don’t look for answers in this book. It is primarily picking up from the first book and setting up for the next book. However, it does serve a very important purpose of deepening the mystery of what is causing the destruction in this world and what happened to Pig’s father. I had forgotten just how crazy Van is. He helps lighten the seriousness of this dystopian mystery. Now to eagerly await the next volume in this series. Recommended to middle grade dystopian fans, animal story fans, and mystery fans.Notes on content [based on ARC]: No language issues. No sexual content (though Pig gets embarrassed by seeing a lady’s bloomers). Some dangerous situations but everyone makes it out ok. Van has a very vague sense of ownership and it appears he steals a vehicle at one point that doesn’t make it back to its owner.I received an ARC of this title from the publisher through NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.

This book picks up where the first did. Pig and his friends are still outside Sunrise Valley and trying to find their way back home. They have about a week left before the next wave of Fog hits and in that time they've come to visit villages and nomads who have been surviving against the Fog. Something Pig notices is that there are Windmills just like the ones back home. Not only were they not expecting people to be outside the walls of Sunrise Valley but they even found more advanced technologyThe art for this little series continues to be Beautifully rendered. While the first book felt very dark and ominous, there's more joy in this one. Yes, Pig and his friends are still trying to get back home before the Fog arrives, but they also start to get along better and Hippo, who was more of the bully character, is starting to grow from the journey. Foxy is as joyous as ever, and Pig is starting to discover some things about his father. Or who he and I assume must be his father (something that had been hinted at in the first book)I'm really curious as to where this is going to lead, especially with the ending we get! I imagine the next book is going to focus more on Pig and his development and quite a few discoveries.

This is the second book in The Dam Keeper series and was a very well done continuation of that series. I continue to really enjoy the illustration, the adventure, and the mystery behind the Dam Keepers. Our characters have ventured outside of Sunrise Valley into the great unknown. As they follow around a deranged lizard they meet a plethora of intriguing characters and find out that there is a vast world outside the one they know. They also struggle to get home in time to warn Sunrise Valley of the impending attack. It was fun to venture out to the world outside of Sunrise Valley. I continue to really enjoy the illustration style and the story. I love the adventure and am curious to see where all the “hints” Pig is finding lead to. My only complaint about this book is that it is a bit slow.Overall this is a very well done continuation of the Dam Keeper series. I enjoyed it a lot and plan on continuing the series!

When I started this comic, I have to admit I was very confused, because I didn't know that this was the second book in a series. The title and info on Netgalley, had nothing about this being a sequel, so when I started it, it was clear that I was missing a few pieces.I wasn't really sure what had happened in the previous book to understand the peril that the characters were in or how they got there. So I started this one in a funk, and not really sure if I was going to like it.I would have liked to read the first book just to have some more background, but I feel like I got enough from this second book to understand this world and the characters in it. It was very fast paced as the characters are moving quickly from one place to the other, but it seems like they are just doing a lot of traveling. Some of the panels don't even have speech bubbles, so you kind of have to guess how the characters interacted when they came across new people in their travels. You had to really pay attention to the art, which didn't really bother me, but it just felt like some of these panels were pointless.I did find the visions that Pig had really interesting and I wanted to get to more of that, but I think I will have to read the next one to get it. I wanted to know more about what exactly a Dam Keeper was, and why everyone seems to live behind walls of a dam. I just feel like this graphic novel was missing some pieces that I would have liked to have been filled in.I do want to say that I loved the artwork in this one, and it's what made me want to continue reading it. I really loved the saturated colors, and I'm curious how the finished product looks in print. My digital copy was a little low-res, but I still thought the style was well executed. If you do read this, I definitely recommend picking up the first one so you are not as confused as I was!*I received a free egalley copy of this book in exchange for my honest review

I am a huge fan of the first book of this series and have been waiting for the second volume. I wish First Second made it clear this is the second of the series because it is not clear. The story of the young misfits of animals is intriguing with full of gorgeous artwork.Really looking forward to the film Tonko House is making based on this story.Would the next book say "Book 3?"
