This is not a very comprehensive book despite the fact that it's all about Mexico City (I should have noticed how many pages it was before purchasing). I did not end up using much of the information in the book- for eating out, I used the Good Food in Mexico City which was very reliable and the bars which the Lonely Planet guide listed I looked at tended to be pretty uninteresting. The transportation information for going to the pyramids at Teotihuacan was not very detailed which made for getting confused in the crowded bus station. This seems like something nearly everyone who spends more than a few days will want to do- why wouldn't it be thorough on the topic? It turns out that the neighborhoods which the Lonely Planet guide covers are sometimes quite far away from each other. This makes the map pretty awkward because there are huge blank spots without street names! If you are the type of person that decides to walk between places and explore, you will definitely want to have a more detailed map of the city handy! My B&B had a copy of the Opinionated Guide which at first glance was not as organized. But when I read about things I had had trouble with in the Lonely Planet book, I noticed the information was actually much better.
We have been to Mexico City twice, the last being six months ago. This book is getting a little out of date, but it still works very well. It provides good neighborhood maps and most of the attractions, which are still amazing and cheap by world standards, are correctly described. We have found that precise information is available on the internet. For example, the metro bus system has expanded dramatically. Apparently there is less interest in English speakers traveling to Mexico City than I would expect, or a newer version of this book would have been published.
Although the Lonely Planet series are packed with information, which is vital to your trip, I like to also buy a guide from DK eyewitness series as well. The reason, Dk guides are packed from cover to cover with extensive photos to go along with the commentary that shows you exactly where you will be visiting. This makes the reading more enjoyable, instead of just reading about a museum or site, it shares the actually experience of being there, from statues to train station. I rated the lonely planet a 4 stars for the information inside it, and the Dk guides would be a 5 and my first choice.
Excellent condition of the book, all very good.
Mediocre
This book is the worst Lonely Planet I have ever purchased. This book lacks all kinds of information regarding new/hip bars and places. The book is completely dated. This book has way too much history and not enough on all the fun and exciting things to do in DF. The writers clearly are not well versed on the trendy areas or up to date on hotels. Use another book this one is Old & Busted.
I purchased this book shortly before a recent 4 day trip to Mexico City even though I was not that impressed with it in my local bookstore. My initial impression was that the descriptions of the sights were kind of short and that the frequent use of 2 columns made the text feel cramped. However, I wasn't that impressed with the other choices and ended up buying this book with Fodor's Mexico 2010 book. (Fodor's guides point out the most important sights, are easy on the eyes, and provide good restaurant recommendations.)In the end, I was glad to have the Lonely Planet guide because its Neighborhoods section has very good walking tours of different neighborhoods in Mexico City. I ended up using these to explore the neighborhoods of Roma and Contesa and found them and the associated maps quite useful. The key to understanding this book is the overview maps on pages 41-43; these will help you orient yourself in Mexico City (which is quite large) and also point you to the right pages for each neighborhood (or section) of the city. Once I figured this out, I found the book more useful. While I relied upon Fodor's guide to determine the main sights I wanted to see, I ended up using the Lonely Planet guide for finding my way between them and checking out interesting buildings and landmarks along the way.The book also has good overviews of Mexico's history and culture in its first chapter. (Fodor's did not.) It also covers some sights outside of Mexico City which can be visited on day trips. My wife and I visited Teotihuacan. The description was adequate, but considering that this is the third largest pyramid in the world, I felt the book could have given it another page or two and said more about its history.I should add that Mexico City is a great place to visit. It has great sights and great food. It is a shame that more Americans don't visit it. While it has a reputation of being polluted and dangerous, my wife and I both felt very safe and comfortable during our entire trip.
This is the first guide in the Lonely Planet collection that I ever use and I am quite satisfied. It does provide very original descriptions of neighbourhoods and out-of-town excursions that are not found in other guides. On the other hand, museums and specific attractions are very summarily dealt with and other sources are indeed required to fully appreciate them. These complements are all the more necessary since this edition of the guide, the most recent for now, was published in 2008. Consequently, hotel and restaurant coverage is not up to date.I will not hesitate in the future to use Lonely Plant Guides for any destination.
