James Patrick Kelly is the Hugo, Nebula, and Italia award–winning author of Burn, Think Like a Dinosaur, and Wildlife. He is a member of the faculty of the Stonecoast Creative Writing MFA Program at the University of Southern Maine. Excellent anthology. Started off light, but the sci-fi gets pretty heavy at the end.

Disappointing. Interesting stories, but all fiction. I was hoping for some specific information regarding the way in which the singularity would develop.

I received an advance copy of "Digital Rapture" from the publishers at Tachyon in exchange for an honest review."Digital Rapture" is the type of anthology where the order of the selections conveys a greater meaning. The book explores the concept of Singularity, or the idea that humanity might one day be replaced by robots, taking the idea of evolution to a unique but still logical conclusion. The book is broken into four distinct sections: The End of the Human Era, The Post Humans, Across the Event Horizon, and The Others. Each section explores the idea of Singularity in greater depth and at a later point in time. It was interesting to be able to see the progression of the idea of Singularity, beginning from the notion that superhuman intelligences could exist and culminating in "The Inevitable Heat Death of the Universe."As with any anthology, there were stories in this book that I loved as well as some that were rather "meh" or just went over my head. I'm going to talk about some of my favorites in the collection. It was hard for me to decide which to discuss here because so many were excellent!"The Last Human" by Isaac Asimov is written in Asimov's typical style. Rather than focusing on specific characters, we see the progression and exploration of an idea as different humans throughout history ask a computer whether entropy can be reversed. I loved the ending."Thought and Action" by Olaf Stapledon is a selection from his larger novel entitled Odd John. The story explores whether beings with superhuman abilities will be bound by the same morality that we are. In this story, John rationalizes committing a murder, and we see that he truly doesn't believe that it was wrong."Sunken Gardens" by Bruce Sterling is set on Mars. Humans have taken several different evolutionary paths, and each sect has its own strengths and weaknesses. Small sections of Mars are terraformed in a competition in which different offshoots of humanity are in the running for an elevation of rank for their entire faction. The protagonist, a woman named Mirasol, must think outside the box in order to achieve victory."The Cookie Monster" by Vernor Vinge begins as a mystery. A new tech support staffer named Dixie Mae gets a message containing information that should theoretically only be known by her, causing her to start asking questions about where it came from. She begins to realize that she's not real, but rather a conscious simulation in a larger computer program. This story fascinated me because we got to see in detail how a computer could evolve consciousness and yet maintain the patience to communicate with itself after a multitude of life cycles and re-boots. This was one of my favorites in the collection.Another favorite was "Cracklegargle" by Justina Robson. Also a mystery of sorts, it tells the story of a man who enlists the help of a post-human gargoyle creature to help him find his missing daughter. One of the ideas present in the story is that strong emotions leave a tangible mark on the world, but our own perception is so limited that we can't see it. The idea of material consciousness was intriguing, and I liked the way that the story played with the kind of ideas found in ghost stories and translated them into sci-fi."True Names" by Cory Doctorow and Benjamin Rosenbaum intrigued me, but at the same time was difficult to understand. The story focuses on three primal forces, Beebe, Demiurge, and Brobdignag. Each of those entities is capable of running simulations of the others, and each also contains multiple smaller beings that are capable of self-replication. The story focuses on those self-replicating beings, and how different iterations of the prima donna Nadia, the philosopher Paquette, and Alonzo, the man that they both love, interact with each other. If it sounds complicated, it is, but it was also fascinating, and may merit a re-read or two so I can understand it better.Overall, I enjoyed this "Digital Rapture" tremendously. It was the kind of anthology that could entertain, but at the same time made me think and ponder the possibilities that the future could hold. I recommend it.

There is a tremendous variety of material in this anthology, and it varies tremendously in quality. Its contents are arranged in chronological order, and can be divided into fiction and nonfiction pieces. Rather than try to review the entire volume I'll just offer a few comments on the individual pieces.The first and last of these stories, Isaac Asimov's ''The Last Question'' and Elizabeth Bear's ''The Inevitable Heat Death of the Universe,'' imagine a future so unimaginably distant that the universe has begun to wind down to the point of complete and total inertia. It is then ''rebooted'' through human technological agency. Such a view of the universe, that it is cylical, self-creating, and self-sustaining. would appear to be a necessary consequence of a secular culture - a universe that was not created by some external agency must be self-sustaining in some way. However, this notion is not easily squared with the observation that the universe is becoming, and must become, less organized and less energetic over time - so human agency gets introduced in order to resolve the difficulty. Elizabeth Bear's story was the more appealing of the two, at least to me. I enjoyed its sparse and lyrical weirdness. Of course we cannot really say anything meaningful about how the universe might wind up so many billion years from now. No doubt all our present notions will have to be radically revised in light of new discoveries at some point, and quite possibly within our lifetimes.Day Million was fun, and it's written in Pohl's usual conversational style. If I can nitpick a bit, I think Pohl underestimates just how much of our modern world would, in fact, be comprehensible to the ancients. The Babylonians certainly knew what a bureaucracy was. But he's certainly right that humanity will look very different indeed in a couple thousand years.Olaf Stapledon's story, ''Thought and Action,'' asks us to consider the moral implications of the emergence of a post-human being. I think his conclusions here are fairly tame. He imagines that such a being might flirt with criminality a bit, but will in the end return to what we would regard as ethical behavior. I don't think that's right. What we regard as ethical behavior is demonstrably a consequence of our economic conditions, of our social conventions, of the existence of a strong state that is capable of punishing criminals, etc. It seems pretty obvious to me that a being that has been freed from those constraints will, sooner or later, conclude that it is not bound by the ethical norms that arise out of them either. It will simply do what it wants, and it will not, in the last analysis, have to justify or explain its behavior to us. I think that emergence of such a being would be frankly terrifying. Only other beings like it would be capable of imposing ethical norms upon it, and these norms probably would not be concerned in any fundamental way with the treatment of people like you and me. We would simply become insignificant.Rudy Rucker's story, ''The Hivemind Man,'' was weird, but not really implausible. At least not in the beginning. Toward the end it drifts off into the realm of fairy tale - whether you appreciate that or not depends, I suppose, on what you expect of the genre. It does bring up the question, however, of whether or not all this interconnectivity is turning us into mere nodes in a vast information-processing network. There's something to be said for that point of view, I suppose. It's an interesting way to think about people.Bruce Sterling's ''Sunken Gardens'' is really more biopunk than transhumanist in outlook, but it does bring up some interesting ideas about how we might modify ourselves in the future.Greg Egan's Crystal Nights was, I thought, the first really excellent story in this volume. In it a billionaire decides that whoever develops AI first will become a god among men, and so he had better develop it before anyone else does - a very sensible assessment, in my opinion. The Darwinian struggle for survival is on, and only the super-rich and the super-intelligent have a snowball's chance in hell of winning it. A couple of different approaches are mooted, but the inventor decides that the best of all possibilities is the same approach that created actual sentience - evolution. The billionaire decides to create an electronic ecosystem in which very simple, self-replicating programs will compete for scarce resources, and, with a bit of tweaking, he hopes, evolve to the point where they are sentient. Something like that happens, but there are some snags that the billionaire does not quite foresee. Needless to say these creatures do not turn out to be quite as malleable as he had hoped. At a certain point, they develop a culture that is so alien to anything that people have experienced that the billionaire and his team are no longer able to really understand it, and that's where they slip the leash. I won't give away the ending, but I thought it was, like the premise of the story, entirely convincing in its effect.David Levine's ''Firewall'' is about a systems security expert who has to keep a sentient virus out of his moonbase. It was ok, but there wasn't anything really new here. His characters seem to take the end of humanity as they have known it just a little too calmly, in my opinion.Vernor Vinge's ''Cookie Monster'' was excellent, and again starts from an entirely believable premise. If you could upload your mind, would you? Maybe. But why not upload other people's minds and turn them into your slave labor force? With such a force at your command, capable of running its processes at thousands or millions of times the speed of real events, you could be a genius in a dozen fields at once, amass huge resevoirs of power and money, do whatever you want. Would you really want to exist as a computer simulation rather than as a real-life god? However, slave economies create their own special problems. No one wants to be enslaved, after all... Vernor Vinge doesn't get into the specifics of how they might escape or resist - do they even have bodies anymore? how can they know what's really real? - but he does make a plausible suggestion about how they might plot their escape. I thought this story was wonderfully clever.I skipped Justina Robinson's ''Cracklegackle'' and the Doctrow/Rosenbaum collaboration ''True Names'' - both for the same reason. The writing style of the first few paragraphs was extremely off-putting, and in my experience stories that start poorly usually don't recover. I gave up on Robin Reed's ''Coalecenths'' and for a similar reason. Here the story just became too difficult to make sense of - the author throws out alot of far future concepts without really bothering to explain what is happening or why. After 15 pages of struggling to make sense out of what I was reading I decided it wasn't worth the effort.Charle's Stross' ''Nightfall'' was weird, but not incoherent. When both the characters and the world they inhabit are computer programs I get a definite sensation of weightlessness and disorientation - there's nothing firm to hold onto in such an environment, no reality to anchor oneself to. The computer which one inhabits either continues to exist, in which case all sensations are equally real, or it ceases, in which case all of them come to a halt. It's a realm of pure phantasm. I'm not sure that Charles Stross's idea of sentient corporations makes alot of sense, at least the way it's explained here, and It doesn't really make alot of sense to use sentient life forms as a form of currency either. But then again I guess it doesn't make much sense to use wads of gold, paper, or sea shells as money either - yet people do. Anyway the story is so far future that I guess at some point you have to just stop asking questions and enjoy the ride.Hannu Rajuneimi's ''The Server and the Dragon'' was lyrical and strange and kind of fun. It didn't really challenge me to think in a new way, but it was enjoyable.The non-fiction contributions were, on the whole, much stronger than the fiction. The introduction is a thoughtful overview of the field, and in it the editors ask - I think very reasonably - why so many commentators assume that mindlessly ramping up processing power will inevitably lead to the emergence of AI. We ought to be paying at least as much attention to neuroscience as to computational science, if we want to develop AI. They also point out - again I think with good reason - that transhumanist/singularity stories have a certain tendency toward plain incoherence, which can easily get out of control if the author is not careful. That seems sufficiently demonstrated by several passages in this volume, and I'm sure in an even more pronounced way by stories they chose not to include.JD Bernal's ''The Flesh'' is a discussion of cybernetics from the 1930's. It's interesting chiefly for its historical content. It certainly demonstrates that the idea of using machines to transcend the limits of biology has been around since the 30's at least, and it vividly illustrates the vast chasm that separates our notions about the future from those available to an author writing almost a hundred years ago. I don't think that it adds much to current discussions around this topic, but I'm glad the editors included it.Vernor Vinge's 1993 talk to NASA about the singularity is reprinted here, and is, I think, an excellent discussion of the central topics of AI/singularity/transhumanism. Anyone who is interested in science fiction at all should give it a read.Kurzweil's ''The Six Epochs'' I could take or leave. When people who clearly do not have a background in history start dividing it up into neat little epochs they lose me. But I'm probably just being territorial here.Rudy Rucker's non-fiction contribution, ''The Great Awakening,'' is sheer theological fantasy, and, at least to my mind, underscores how deeply intertwined the transhumanist/singularity movement is with an essentially religious conception of the universe and of human life. I don't have a problem with theological thinking per se, but I don't think many transhumanists, who, at least in my experience, are almost all atheists, would be comfortable to realize just how deeply saturated their worldview is with the language and assumptions of theology. Instead of locating the central nexus of history in the past, as theologians do, they locate it in the future. Instead of hoping for divine miracles to solve their problems, they hope for incredible technologies. Instead of looking to salvation to defeat death, they look to mind-uploading, etc. etc. The outward form has changed, but the same basic set of concerns, and the same basic psychological approach, is at work in both instances. People don't really stop believing in God - they just trade in the old gods for new ones. Anyway my criticism of this essay is at bottom the same as my criticism of ''The Hivemind Man'' - he goes too fast, assumes too much, and in the process his ideas devolve into fairy tales. Maybe an orphid net really will turn us into a race of omnipotent telepaths (i.e. of angels and devils) in the future - but there's really no good reason to think that it will. Or at least there's no really convincing argument here to that effect. At bottom it's just fantasy.I think this book is worth picking up for the half dozen or so gems in it, and I certainly don't regret my time or my purchase. I think the editors performed a service to the genre by collecting this material, and I think it will be of great value to anyone who is interested in posthumanism and the singularity. I do think, however, that there is enough unevenness in this volume to vindicate Gardner Dozois' remark, that the post humanism/singularity genre has not quite hit its stride yet. There's still plenty of work to be done to turn the core of genuinely thoughtful ideas which underlay this genre into a really compelling body of fiction.

Gr 9 Up-In this terrific debut novel, readers meet Sahar, a 17-year-old student who lives in Tehran. She is smart and ambitious, and she has a secret that could get her arrested or even killed; she is a lesbian and is in love with her best friend. When Nasrin's parents arrange for her to marry a young male doctor, Sahar knows that she and Nasrin will no longer be able to be with each other. When desperate Sahar meets transsexual Parveen at a party given by her gay cousin, she thinks she sees a way to be with Nasrin. In Iran, it is not illegal to be transsexual, as it is to be gay or lesbian, and the state will even pay for sex reassignment surgery because it is seen as a necessary medical procedure. Sahar pursues sex reassignment, dreaming of marrying Nasrin even though she knows in her heart that she doesn't really want to become a man. As Nasrin's wedding approaches, Sahar realizes its inevitability and must decide what she is going to do. Farizan's portrayal of Sahar and her predicament is sensitive and heartbreaking. Even less-sympathetic characters, such as Nasrin and her parents, are portrayed in a nuanced manner; in the culture Farizan depicts, the girls' fears that their romantic relationship will become known are realistic and understandable. Rich with details of life in contemporary Iran, this is a GLBTQ story that we haven't seen before in YA fiction. Highly recommended.-Kathleen E. While one of the main reasons I picked this book up was for the LGBT factor, I found that my most favorite part of it was learning more about Iran and the people. I actually felt like I was immersed in life there and while it could have gone deeper and we could have seen more, I felt like it was just the right amount for this book. It wasn't too much to take in, especially since it's just part of the story. We see the laws and how things work just through Sahar's life and her comments. For example, when she got on the bus she said women have to sit in the back while the men are in the front, but in this case it wasn't actually a complaint, she said it was a blessing and commented on something along the lines of at least no men can grope her on a crowded bus (it was actually a little different, because Sahar is slightly crass at times, and says things very bluntly).In the book we get to see different things, from her wealthy friend Nasrin's home and family, to her cousin Ali and his underground crew of gays, lesbians, transgenders, etc. There was variety and I appreciated that. I found that I was actually surprised at some things. One thing was that Western culture has permeated the country even though so much of it is illegal. People smuggle pretty much anything and everything into the country from illegal movies to alcohol. They have illegal satellites to watch television they aren't suppose to watch. It kind of surprised me at how much it was the 'norm' to do this. I also loved just learning a little about the culture. This wasn't something that was delved into very much, but from the meals she cooked, to the clothing they wore, it was all fascinating to me. I think it's important for stories like this to reach our teens.I really enjoyed Sahar a lot. She had a great voice and was so easy to 'get'. I understood her personality really well. She was blunt and honest, but held her tongue (just barely) when she really needed to. I felt like she was a bit blinded by her love for Nasrin though and this was sort of her downfall. She decides she needs to have a sex change so she can marry Nasrin, but Nasrin is already engaged to a guy and they are to be married very soon. When people try to talk sense into Sahar she refuses to listen. She feels this is her only option. While I 'get' this, it was slightly frustrating to read. But this is her journey, she has to find it inside herself to do the right thing. I do like that it was talked about, the difference in just being gay/lesbian and actually feeling like you are trapped in the wrong body and should be the opposite sex. Because being gay doesn't mean that you are trapped as the wrong sex, and some people may not really understand that.Nasrin was a character I had mixed feelings about. She's been spoiled her whole life and maybe doesn't appreciate Sahar as much as she should, but it's clear she does love her. I understand her personality and who she is and it's not really a negative to the story, but I didn't love her. Ali is Sahar's cousin and he's gay and actually flaunts it somewhat. He is a very fun character and I would love to read a book all about him. It would be SO fun! But I also want to see his HEA. I also loved Sahar's father. There's a bit of trouble between them since he's been in mourning for so long and has forgotten to live and love and so Sahar and he have a few things to work through. I enjoyed this aspect of the book and am so happy she has a kind and gentle father in a country where men can do so much harm to women if they choose.This is a short book that I cruised through in only a couple hours. It was hard to put down just because I was enjoying it so much. This book does have some bad language and talks about mature themes like sex and some descriptions regarding having a sex change. I'm not sure I would say it's for mature readers only, but be cautioned that there are some mature themes.I'm very glad I read this book and I really hope that more consider reading it. I think it should be in every library.

In If You Could Be Mine, Sara Farizan has opened quite a window. Through it, teen readers see the oppressive world of being gay in present day Iran. But the picture Farizan paints is one that reflects a global plight that many gay teens endure. From brutally oppressive nations to more enlightened ones—even our own United States of America—gays face opposition. They are assailed, accosted, looked down upon, despised, told they are sick, and yes, forbidden to be who God made them. Farizan’s Sahar is very much in love with her lifelong friend Nazrin. The feeling is mutual, but when Nazrin’s marriage is announced, Sahar tumbles into despair, leading her to consider alternatives that will most probably never be viable solutions. We feel Sahar’s pain, we feel her despair, and we want to shout at her, tell her that she is being foolish. But teens can be foolish—it’s in their nature. So we go along on this ride, hoping that author Farizan will eventually lead Sahar out of her quagmire and into a path that will work for her. Many of the loudest shouting readers will be exclaiming, “Leave Iran!” But, whether stuck in the gloomy restraints of Iran or in an unaccepting town in America, leaving your home, your family, is usually not an option. Far too many gay teens are living on the streets because they chose that option, and we know they need our love and understanding, yet what was supposed to be their “support group” failed them and led them to flee. Farizan explores that option for Sahar, as well as a few others, and gay teen readers will benefit from it. But most of all, all readers, teen or otherwise, will benefit from this sensitive exploration of what it is like to be gay, and what it is like to be gay in Iran.

Or take the drastic route of undergoing a sex change operation, despite not being transsexual.When Nasrin announces her engagement to Reza, the older, smart, handsome medical student her parents choose for her, Sahar falls deep into depression and the fantasy that she can change her fate. Will she undergo a drastic surgery to keep the woman she loves from marrying another? Many have made this choice, as gender re-assignment surgery is not only legal, but state funded in Iran.The characters in this books will infuriate you, entertain you, shock you and ultimately break your heart. In a world with no good solution, what's a girl in love to do?Personally, I'm not only a huge advocate of LGBTQ rights, I'm also extremely interested in the Middle East, Islam and Religious Politics. This books has everything you could ask for. Political without being impersonal, activist without being preachy, entertaining without being dismissive. The author knows her Iranian history and culture (not surprising as her parents are from Iran) and displays deep sensitivity toward the turmoil inside Sahar's heart.I was impressed by the authors ability to display some of the hypocracy of the religious police, the deep fear of discovery by the members of the LGBTQ community, and the gender issues women in the Middle East face every day.The girls are deeply in love. Usually, I find the whole romance theme predictable and boring, here that wasn't the case. Their furtive kisses, heated exchanges and frustrated arguments all read extremely true to life. They are not yet 18, still children in some ways, trying to navigate a situation many adults can't manage, let alone with the added stress of being gay in a hostile climate. They make bad choices, act insensitively and for Sahar's part, she deludes herself into thinking a sex change surgery could fix things, if you read between the lines, it's clear she knows better, but she's desperate.The secondary characters and subplots are fabulous. I loved the father and Parveen (a male to female transsexual who takes Sahar under her wing). The gay cousin, Ali, could have been a stereotypical nightmare, but instead, his boisterous behavior and underground dealings come across as sincere by products of his personality and situation.I highly recommend this book. My only complaint is that it is at times too slow and some points are over simplified, however, considering the target audience of the book the choices the author makes are appropriate. An excellent read for teenagers, geared to make them think without too much explicit anything, and full of intriguing characters. This books is definitely intended for a Western audience and written in an American voice. The content is extremely harram despite the tame descriptions.If you are interested in the situation for LGBTQ individuals in the Middle East, I highly recommend you check out "A Jihad for Love".

I've read many of the authors books and enjoyed them for what they are - action thrillers. I thought the plot was a little weak in this one in that the averted tragedy outcome was at best unlikely. Also way too much focus on concussion damage, and the issue was given a lot of hyperbole. I felt the author had performed at a higher level in prior offerings.

This was an action packed thriller with a good story line. Characters seemed almost real. Story that involved something for every reader. A mystery, alove story and a story of comraderi among warrior friends.

I love the Will Slater series. Lots of action snd highlights of his past as he battles through his fights while helping those who are in dire need of his special forces. Jason was the first series and hope he'll return soon and meet up with Will again.Thanks Matt, enjoyed it very much!

Mr. Rogers does it again. Thanks for a great read; again. You never fail with your story lines. Very appreciated and in keeping with that...I can't stop reading your novels. PS..in my next life; I want to be Jason King or Will Slater. Keep 'em coming. Highly recommend the Matt Rogers novels. Thanks again.

This book was outstanding. The characters and story flowed so perfectly that you had no trouble keeping track of all the players. The surprise in the book was great and made this one of the best Matt Rogers books. Mr Rogers, you have sure set a high standard for your next book. Recommend this author and all his heroes highly.

Jump on this fast ship to death and destruction. Double trouble with both Will Slater and Jason King. It will take both of them to survive this adventure, leaving one of them out of the business. Great read from 1st to last page. Looking forward to "The Bull", came out today. ..perfect timing.

Matt Rogers never fails to provide an action-filled read that thoroughly provides enjoyable time spent from start to finish. Once again we find Will and Jason King working together to avoid catastrophic consequences.

While she was very active with the BPP, she joined a Communist Party youth group in high school and joined the CPUSA as an adult while she was still in graduate school. This autobiography, which she has said she did not want to write as she was too young, details not only her famous trial but also her development and awakening into the reality that capitalism has no future and the promise of communism to meet people's needs over profits. I've never seen this book on a required or suggested reading list for a Black Studies Program, but it must be. The role of radicals must be salvaged from history, and Davis' book makes its contribution to acknowledging the struggle

Great book! There were a lot of things I did not know about her. She has been through a lot, but survived it all.

Dr. Angela Davis hs lived an amazing life. She is an incredible speaker. To hear her story in her own words is worth the price of the book. I hope one day to meet her and get her to autograph the book.She is on the level of King, Jr. and Malcolm X when it comes to fighting for civil rights for ALL!!

Amazing book about an amazing woman, who while on paper is on the young side for an autobiography, has gone through more than most of us will in several lifetimes (and if you're white, never).A great real life story, wonderfully told. Thank you Angela!

A brilliantly written memoir of a time in US history that should never be forgotten. Published when Davis was in her late 20s, this book carries the immediacy of recent events and the richness of detail needed to understand the writer's experiences of the times of which she writes. Her work with various activist groups uniquely placed her to tell this story, and her depth of perspective can't be surpassed because she lived it. This *is* the real deal.

My local library doesn’t carry Angela which is a shame. It reads like a novel. She is excellent with her story telling & words. I adore her. I was fortunate to meet her last year & she signed my copy of this very book.

I had the blessing of meeting this kind, old, revolutionary soul in my hometown a couple of weeks ago, and it had a similar effect as reading this book:A tremendous impact on how you look at the world of people around you and inspiration to be another fist that holds a candle to the oppression of the masses in this world.

I decided to give the book a try and was not disappointed.This is being marketed as a gardening book, which I think is not completely accurate and sells it seriously short. The authors do spend a couple dozen pages talking about their garden, what they did to rejuvenate their backyard soil, etc. For me, the best part then really begins, as the book moves on into a concise history of the development of microbiology, followed by an exquisitely detailed explanation of how microorganisms partner with both plants and humans to the mutual benefit of both.Although I am decades removed from the only biology class I ever had in high school, and have essentially no background in this area to draw on, I had no trouble at all following the explanations, and in general found them fascinating. I believe that in this respect, the text is totally accessible to the reasonably intelligent non-biologist.The book takes a wrecking bar to the common perception of the microbiological world as one that is inhabited chiefly by evil pathogens that make us ill or that kill us, and shows how the vast majority of these are actually beneficial. It explains how these work in the human immune system and in nature to fight the bad guys (the pathogens), exchange minerals and nutrients, and in general create environmental systems we are dependent on that actually cooperate with more than compete with one another. There is a very interesting discussion about vaccines, including a story about polio. Near the end of the book, the authors made what I thought was a very creative observation that described the human colon as a root turned inside out; by this point in the book, the reader will actually be able to make sense of the comparison.For any readers (especially non-biologist types like myself) desiring to learn more about this subject and the emerging science of the biome, this is a great place to start. Even though not interested in gardening should get a lot out of this book.Although not detracting from the book in general, the authors’ generally socialist politics peeps out amusingly in a few places. If these speculations could be collected separately, they might be titled “The Hidden Half of Human Motivation” since in reality, human society ALWAYS has a variety of motivations for what it collectively does. Certain perverse incentives always have and always will exist in human society.

Indeed, our outdated view of 'germs' is leading to the rapid evolution of superbugs that can resist most antiseptics and drugs. Many chronic diseases are a consequence of poorly developed, unhealthy microbiomes.The message of this book is that much more needs to be learned about the hidden world of nature, because even though we can't see it, our lives depend on it.
