Im enjoying this series very much so far, excited to see where it goes

Fence Vol. 2 by CS Pacat and Johanna the Mad is one of my anticipated titles this year because Vol. 1 was in my best of 2018 list. Fence is a graphic novel series about fencing in an all boys' boarding school. The main characters are Nicholas and Seiji, competitors for a highly coveted spot in the school's fencing team. They're also reluctant roommates. Love the rivalry between these two and where I hope their relationship will eventually lead.🤞🏻 I mean just look at Vol. 2's cover, doesn't that give off "Now kiss!" vibes?⁣⁣ ⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣Aside from Nicholas and Seiji, there's a whole bunch of secondary characters who are also candidates for the fencing team and it's just a lot of fun to see them all interact with each other. To see what motivates them and also how they view everyone else around them. I know next to nothing about fencing but that hasn't affected my enjoyment of this series. I love the flow of the story and the artwork that goes with it. There's humor in there, and just so much cuteness that makes me want to squish the characters. ⁣⁣⁣⁣My only complaint is I WANT VOL. 3 RIGHT NOW!😭 I know the first twelve issues of this series are done and I can't wait for the graphic novel editions to be released. Pretty sure this series will take a while to reach nationals and the main characters' ultimate goals, but I'm in it for the long haul. Highly recommend this for graphic novel fans, and for fans of Yuri on Ice which was one of the inspirations for this series. I'm reminded that I still need to watch that!⁣

As fun as the first! This volume adds even more of those wonderful sports story cliches - a hinted past between Seiji and his nemesis, Nicholas declaring their rivalry, insightful coaches and enjoyable side characters... Great stuff! I'll definitely be following this series as it progresses!

Oh my word, this was such a damn treat. I love these characters and this graphic novel series so very much. Vol. 1 completely stole my heart last year, and Vol. 2 was a wonderful addition. Even though the wait for Vol. 3 to get published is going to maybe be the death of me.This bind up really focuses on how all of the fencers are still in tryouts, therefore they are being ranked based off their wins verses the other candidates. Harvard and Seiji are at the very top, while Nicholas is trying to climb his way back up the rankings. But we get to see so many match ups in this volume and I was absolutely living for it.I just love this storyline and seeing all the students at this boarding school trying to live out their dreams with fencing. The conversations are perfect. The art is a new masterpiece on every page. The friendships and brewing relationships are beyond words. The only real negative thing I can say is that sometimes the pacing feels so very slow. But I have no doubts that it’s absolutely going to be worth the wait!

The American church structure as we have known it is dead. We either have mega-churches that no one can duplicate (but many try to) or we have small churches with mainly white-haired congregations in debt for their lovely buildings. Where will they be in 20 years? This book offers some incredible ways to get back to what really matters and can help move us out into the world where we must go and shine the light of Christ!

I have mixed feelings about this book. On the one hand, Cole raises some important questions, which have contributed to my understanding of how far the church has come from its roots. I am still working through the implications of some of these questions.On the other hand, I found it very difficult to get through some of the chapters in which Cole seems to ramble away from his main topic or repeat himself unnecessarily. Some of his claims seemed unfounded, and it seemed that he spent much of the book defending the why and the way he and his church have done things. I wish he had focused more on the substance of his ideas and less on justifying his reasoning and practice.In he end, I agree with some of Cole's conclusions and disagree with others, but I'll stick to reviewing the book itself here. ;)

Neil Cole provides excellent guidance for recovering the passion for being the church and for expanding the impact of the Gospel, not in traditional church settings, but in small life transformation groups, that rapidly expand through multiplication. Much like human cell division, LTGs are designed to multiply, not just grow bigger. If you want to revitalize your congregation, this is a good place to start looking for a new way forward.

Neil Cole writes carefully and completely about the changes going on around the world as people look for more of what God really promised, the loving community of faith that lives the grace, truth and witness Jesus commanded and prayed for. In this book you won't get an ideology thrown at you you will get a report of what is going on around the world and what the real principles are for really living the life that the church was supposed to be. If you are feeling, like millions are, that building programs, talking heads and worship shows are not what you really want or wanted for your life in Christ then you need to read this book. You will read more about the priesthood of all believers, the caring community and the witnessing community. You can begin to experience the life Jesus really wanted you to have and you can only truly receive it, give it and live it in a true community. Check it out.

Not a bad book, I guess but probably one you can live without. Too many pictures has already been seen in Val Atkinson's previous books and the concept is exactly the same: Get some good written texts, none original, and mix it with nice pictures and good lay-out. I think is time for Val to come up with something more original. He could do better.

Robert Hirsch's survey of the origins and evolution of photography, "Seizing the Light," is a welcome addition to the expanding study of the medium. In clear, insightful, and engaging prose, Hirsch unfolds photography's hit-or-miss birth which was rapidly followed by coherent technological developments almost at the speed of light. Hirsch makes us believe that photography was inevitable; the darling and necessary child of destiny wed to information theory. And Hirsch's treatment of early 20th century Modernist photography and the philosophy behind Pictorialism is excellent.As a primer for the invention of photography and its chemical underpinnings, "Seizing the Light" is as good as it can be. It falls a little short, however, in its treatment of contemporary photography. The book would have been better served by including a few in-depth surveys of important contemporary photographic projects in order to emphasize the centrality of this discipline in contemporary art history and postmodern theory which is heavily dependent on the nature of images and processes of image-making.

History can be boring, and dry. The book starts with, as one may expect, the dawn of photography. At first, I avoided this book, letting my reading for class pile up until midterms hit and SURPRISE! I found myself needing to read half of a textbook. It was that task that lead me to love this book. I sat and read it, which at first, was painful. Then as it drew on, I realized, that I was enjoying learning the roots of my passion, and that Hirsch wrote it in such a way that drew me in, and was actually entertaining. I got a 102% on that midterm, and I went on to buy a used copy of this book when I stumbled across it.

This textbook is a wealth of information. I had no idea the history of photography was so rich. You never really think much about the history of our technology, etc the way you do about the history of people or cultures as a whole. There are several pages of pictures in each chapter to accompany all of the writing, and each chapter ends with endnotes, citations and information about the text from the chapter. The writing is very organized. I have no complaints. It's a great textbook to learn from.

I'm enrolled in a basic photography history course at a community college. This is the textbook we were assigned to buy for the class. The book is well put together and full of great facts. The size is rather large but this allows for the many pictures and nice size text used in the book. The chapters flow well and the book is not hard to read. I am all around satisfied with the textbook. I also found out after purchasing it that it's available for digital download onto the Kindle. Some in my class have downloaded it and say they read it throught the day and can study on the go with the book in digital format.

This book was required for my photography history class. I couldn't of done my class without it! Very interesting and informative on the way photography has evolved over the years. I plan on reading this book over and over!

This book is beautifully illustrated and most definitely will grab your child's attention. I was taken by the artist's style and enjoyed looking at all the artwork throughout the book. Because of the artwork, I was sure I was going to love this Bible story book. Unfortunately, that was not the case.My concern started with the first story: the creation. The author's first sentence states: "In the beginning, there was nothing but darkness ... and God." The first thing that popped into my head was, "Why would God live in darkness?" Darkness has always had a bad/evil connotation to it. This has a totally different feel to it than how my Bible starts out: "In the beginning God created the heaven and the earth." (Gen. 1:1 KJV).As the first chapter progressed on, I got the feeling the author does not believe the creation takes place in six days. " The seasons changed and seeds scattered and grew into plants." Then man was made." From what I take from this, man was made at least a year after to go through the life cycle of a plant.I have other concerns as well - but won't go into them. It sounds quite picky - since this is only a child's book, but children are like sponges. They absorb so much more than we think they do. We need to feed them the correct information from the beginning. If that information doesn't exactly match what you believe, don't use it. If you do, you will only cause confusion later. Children learn and don't forget easily and so hard to correct later.Although beautifully illustrated, this book is not something I'd use for my family.Please note: I received a copy of this book from the publisher. I was not required to write a positive review, but instead, one that gives my honest opinion.

What a beautiful Bible storybook. The illustrations are modern and yet beautifully soft. The artist has wonderfully portrayed an artistic essence of the Spirit flowing across the pages indicative of God's Spirit flowing throughout history and throughout the lives of the people of the Bible as well as God's people today.Most Bible storybooks retell the events that occurred to people throughout Biblical history and do a good job of it. I have never seen one that focuses of God's Spirit and the involvement of the Spirit. We knew or know about this, but it has not been part and parcel of traditional Bible stories.What a blessing!The way each story is written in this book gently puts forth the basic information, people, and interaction of the story. But it is so beautifully written. There is a grace to the storytelling that is simply beautiful.Each story begins with a Bible quote and reference that enable the reader (or parents) to quickly find it in their copy of the Scriptures. The version used is the NIV which will appeal to a large audience. I, personally. would have preferred the KJV. Those who prefer a different Bible version can easily use this Bible storybook as a storybook and read the actual Bible text from their preferred version of Scripture.This book will certainly be a treasure for the families that own a copy.Disclosure: I received a complimentary copy to facilitate this review. Though this is titled “Bible,” it’s really more of a story compilation. As the title suggests, the content focuses on God’s Spirit and actions. My sister and I had an interesting conversation about the way she views God as a Spirit, transcendent of gender and physical form. This book follows a similar theme as it details the way God acts through His Spirit.This storybook contains a good variety of stories. I like the colorful illustrations and the length of the reading passages. Each story is approximately 6-8 pages long. That short-but-sweet length makes it a perfect nighttime activity.I received a free copy as part of the book tour. Opinions shared are mine.

The premise of this book is to tell stories of the Bible with an emphasis on the role of the Holy Spirit in each of the stories. There are a couple reasons why this isn't as successful as I would have liked.First, It is called an "Illustrated Bible" but isn't a Bible. It is a children's book of child-level Bible stories. Everything from Creation to Joseph to David to Jesus to Paul and finally to the child (which I thought was a really great way to end the book.) But if you are going to tell stories, rather than actually illustrate the Bible, it seems incorrect to call this a Bible. It should be upfront.Second, the stories really stretch the participation of the Spirit and attribute to it things it may not have actually done. Look at the first story: Genesis 1. God is seen as creating (good) and then the Spirit is said to make sure that all the stars "stay in place." I guess you could attribute the fact that all things are held together by God/Jesus and since the Holy Spirit is a part of that it is said to participate. But in Genesis you don't have the Spirit actually doing that. In the second story, the Spirit is the one that breathes life into Adam. On the other open page (22) you actually read Gen 2:7 where is says the Lord God breathed life into the man. I don't mean to split hairs here because God is God. But attributing things to the Spirit where the Bible doesn't seems like a leap I wouldn't recommend.The art is gorgeous. I love how the Spirit is represented as wispy white smoke that curls around the characters when the Spirit takes action. I like the vast majority of the stories. And I love the ending. Not a bad book, just not what I expected.A copy of the book was provided for review.

There are some good interviews in this book with a hand full of musicians from the black metal scene, but this book misconstrues countless facts and many of the most important events in the history of the genre. Black metal's most prolific musicians (such as Fenriz) condemn the text. Many state that the majority of it was written from a very one-sided perspective without proper consultation of any of the musician's/person's true standpoints on the matters discussed.Who's word should really be taken? Some Swedish journalists looking to make a dramatic story, or the actual people who lived out the events and know the scene from inside out? I am actually embarrassed to have sourced this book once.

This book started off as potentially interesting as it traced the early days of Black Metal and its pioneers, though even then I had a hard time sensing whether the authors knew of the potential comedy by the extreme views of its subjects. In fact, this book could have become an intriguing exploration pairing Euronymous and Vikernes as two sides of metal mania—the rebel vs. the sociopath. With the sociopath, Vikernes, eventually murdering the man who may have been less ‘authentic’ but still a symbol of any musical movement of putting up a seemingly evil front more as a metaphor than a literal expression. But alas, from the coverage of the murder and trial, the authors got sloppy, similar to their care in the formatting of this book, and got carried away with Vikernes, who pales in personality to Manson, despite several attempts to pair the two together, to then delve into a long treatise on satanism and the spread of Black Metal. Perhaps the movie will present a far more interesting view of this subject matter.

The hundred or so pages covering Mayhem were fascinating, but the book runs out of steam around the time Varg is interviewed about Nazi UFOs for pages on end

Four stars for the amazingly deep, detailed coverage of a sub-culture subject. The first few sections of the book tell the story well, the latter parts pile on detail that at times is more than you'll ever want to know or take the time to read. As an extreme metal fan, I appreciated it but admittedly skimmed through the late sections on UFOs and Norwegian National Socialist policy. There are some interviews in here that you wouldn't get anywhere else.

An interesting indepth look at how the Black Metal scene began in Norway along with interview pieces with members at the forefront. It devolves into Varg Vikernes' personal idealogies along the way(to get a real sense of his views all one must do is watch his YouTube videos) -- how much of it is factual is hard to say as Varg seems to have denounced the book as inaccurate. You will find some sensationalism here, but overall it's still somewhat interesting. Fans of Heavy Metal will most likely find something enjoyable here.

Informative and shocking. Many metal bands talk the talk, but the Norwegian Black Metal bands this book focuses on walk the walk. While I repudiate the crimes these depraved individuals have committed, this book reads more like a novel than non-fiction because of their outrageous and criminal behavior that shocked Norway in the early 1990's.

....You just cant look away.This is indeed an extremely well written account of the books subject matter.Being someone that was there for the first releases of the Metal genre known as "Black Metal" (Venom,Bathory,Sodom,etc..), it was shocking to read this & see how vastly different people may perceive the same exact thing: what I always took as a borderline "joke",references to Satanism & the Devil as an expression of rebellion (ohhh,scare the parents & authority figures!!) or perhaps an appreciation for horror movies (that was my take as a teenager),these misguided kids from the other side of the world took as a soberingly literal treatise on giving oneself over to evil.And even more disturbing than that is how it morphed into a branch of neo-nazism(?) A fascinating sociological read not for the faint of heart.

Not only is this book an entertainng read on a genre of music, it's also a a well written history of Satanism in music. How a troubled youth finds an expression of the idyllic sermon of sin; black metal.
