Before this year, I knew very little about the Korean War. Now I know a lot more about what is called “the forgotten war,” thanks to two books on the subject that I’ve read over the last two months. Earlier this week, I finished “This Kind of War: The Classic Military History of the Korean War” by T.R. Fehrenbach.Fehrenbach tells his story primarily through the perspective of the individual soldiers who fought on the front lines of the war. He describes the living hell of some of the great battles of the war, including Seoul, Osan, Inchon, Imjin River, Chosin (Changjin) Reservoir, Bloody and Heartbreak Ridges, Pork Chop Hill, and others.Fehrenbach wrote “This Kind of War” about ten years after he served in Korea as an Army officer. Although doesn’t mention his Korean War experiences anywhere in his book, Fehrenbach’s disillusionment with how the war was fought at all levels fairly drips from each page. His main criticism is that the United States was very much unprepared to fight a major land war in Asia – or anywhere else, for that matter. The Truman Administration had spent the five years after the end of World War II gutting defense budgets, reducing military personnel levels, and depriving the armed forces of the essential equipment they needed in order to win. Soldiers – especially those stationed in Japan, the ones who would end up being sent to Korea – had lost their fighting edge due to inadequate training and soft living.Fehrenbach brings to life many of the most famous historical events of the war, including President Harry Truman’s firing of General Douglas MacArthur, the death of General Walton Walker in a motor vehicle accident, and – most interestingly – the plight of prisoners of war (POWs) on both sides. Relying on interviews with American POWs who survived captivity, Fehrenbach paints a devastating picture of the sub-human conditions these soldiers were forced to endure. The author also gives a detailed account of the uprising in the United Nations POW camp on Koje-do Island, and how that rebellion by North Korean and Chinese prisoners was suppressed.“This Kind of War” is an excellent account of the Korean War. I thoroughly enjoyed reading it, and I learned a great deal from it. Highly recommended.

As a military history of the mid-cold war era, it is a well-written and concise history of Western (mostly American) military action in Asia. The intricacies of coupling warfare and diplomacy in Korea is heart-breaking. The forfeiture of American lives for ‘status quo ante’ is appalling.Which brings me to my personal point: did no one who got us into Viet Nam read this book? Was nothing taught in Military Colleges about what happened? Where were the Westmoreland’s at this time? The McNamara’s? The Kennedy’s?A land war in Asia with tenuous supply lines from the north, where people brought all equipment south by hand, foot, truck. Landscape not conducive to large scale mobilizations. An enemy that can live on 3 rice balls a day, survive hostile climates, with a feeling of righteousness.Am I describing Korea or Viet Nam?Sorry for the tirade. Read the book.

The book still deserves five stars based purely on content. It's a style of history writing that may strike many 21st Century Americans as preachy, grandfatherly, and stuffy. But Fehrenbach makes a decent case for his arguments and he's a first-rate writer, and his prose is quite lively. So I have no problem recommending the book, and do so with special enthusiasm either for aspiring young warriors (especially aspiring military officers) or for those interested in the history of history-writing (great insights into American thought in 1962, on the cusp of our increasing involvement in the Vietnam War).As of January 2015, however, the Kindle e-book version of this book is HORRIBLY FORMATTED. If I had the ability to rate this book's format apart from its content, I'd give it only one star. Almost every page has formatting errors, and while they're all distracting (and eventually very annoying), some of them are impenetrably confusing, substantively obscuring the author's meaning. I don't know whether the blame is Amazon's or the publisher's -- my guess is the latter -- but whoever was responsible for proofreading the conversion of this e-book should perhaps be sentenced to at least a choice between being fired and spending a weekend in a North Korean prison camp.

I have not read it in many years. I bought this copy to replace one I gifted to a friend. It is a good read for anyone who wants to understand the dynamics of USA and United Nations involvement in world affairs. It also provides some insight into the disastrous consequences for the those who serve their country. Throwing troops in summer uniform into lethal winder conditions, with inadequate weapons and supplies is inexcusable. As a veteran of the Vietnam conflict I am happy to say that although we did not learn all the lessons of Korea, we did, at least, take much better care of our troops.

I researched so many books before settling on this one. I wanted the dialogue to be open between my daughter and me and this book has helped greatly. The script format is so helpful and the questions are also great for cementing the truth in and clarifying. Gilkerson uses Scripture well, which I always have my daughter read aloud beforehand. This is the second book I have received in this series and I am just as pleased with this as with the first.

I bought this book and the other two - They are fantastic and amazingly opened up great communication about sex, puberty and relationships between my children and myself. I love the factual representation of a God given gift of sex. Made it easy to talk about.

Love all of these books in these series. I'm a therapist and these books are recommended to my clients parents!!

So happy to say that I purchased this devotional for my brother. I cannot say enough good things about Priscilla Shirer and her writing style in Unseen: The Prince Warriors devotional. This devotional is perfectly geared towards the Pre-Teen/Teen area. It deals with a lot of the issues that they struggle with on a daily basis the whole time encouraging them to place on the full armor of God.What I love most about all of Shirer's books is her down to Earth, lets get in the mud, and get messy mentality. She never tries to avoid an issue and for teen boys, this is important. With how the enemy will attack on a daily basis it is important to be aware and vigilant. This devotional goes along even better if you've already read some of Shirer's Prince Warrior books. Because my brother has read the first book in the series, he is enjoying this devotional even more.If you are searching for a devotional for your (pre)teen son or even daughter, this is the devotional for you. In our family, we've taken to reading and then discussing what we read as well as find instances of it in the Bible. Whatever method works for you, I encourage you to read and enjoy this devotional and the accompanying books, you will not regret it! We bought this for a Christmas gift for our son. Now that we have it and have had a chance to read through some of the devotions, we will be ordering one for our nieces and nephews too!

Excellent content. My 8 year old loves the novels, which are great stories and nicely bound, so this was a natural next purchase. The topics and writings would work for a kid age 6-26+.This was almost a 4 star review because the quality/finish of the paper on the paperback devotionals book is different from the novels and was disappointing for me. The pages are not uniformly cut, thus making the edges jagged and 'soft'. Not my preference, but maybe the publisher was going for an 'old world' feel.

If you are a fan of Priscilla Shirer's Prince Warrior books, then this devotion is perfect. If you aren't a fan (yet), I would still recommend it. Devotional books for boys can be tricky to write and use. Shirer does a phenomenal job with this one. My son asks me every night to read the next one in the devotional. As a parent, I love the topics and have had many moments where I take the devotion to heart. She organizes the book around the armor of God and ties each devotion into a particular piece of the armor and how to use it. I would highly recommend this book.

Love this!!!!! The paper that the devotionals are written on is very rustic looking yellow paper with a rough edge to make it seem old. This is a very good and appropriate look for the book. I don't know about another devotional out there that addresses the Unseen world or the real enemy. The devotions are just a page long. They each end with "actional intel". That gives the kids/teens a way to put what they've learned into practice. It's not frilly, but I think girls would like it too.

This is the best devotional I have ever done. Priscilla speaks with authority and humor on subjects we all deal with. The word pictures and anecdotes she uses leap right off the page to pierce you right in the heart. Countless times, the message of the day was EXACTLY what we were currently dealing with as a family. The Spirit moved in us as I pray He does in your family.I literally cannot recommend this enough. I will be buying copies for Christmas presents!

My son has enjoyed this devotional and the truths it has begun to develop for him. Some have said it's not super deep, but it does build a foundation. It also provides us with some truths to talk more about and search the scriptures. It's a page devotional and a great length for young(my son is in 4th grade) children.

Not really what I was looking for. There is one Bible verse a day and very little mention of God. I link the devotion back for my son and give him more scripture.

You’ll eventually learn where she was born, which countries her parents emigrated from, and how she eventually finds herself globe trekking in search of herself, and the foods that represent family and home in different countries.What I will say is that she has a way with words and descriptions that can put you both in the kitchen or in an inner city walled garden. This girl can write! I was a nervous wreck throughout because I wasn’t sure if there would be a happy ending or not, and leave it to her to not quiet my anxiety until the last TWO pages! I will leave you with one exerpt–but just the one!"Iranian rice is unlike any other. It isn’t boiled or steamed or thrown unceremoniously into a rice cooker. Iranian rice is first soaked and bathed like a Hindu princess, rinsed in three changes of just-warm water. It goes into the pot with a spoonful of salt, carefully simmering just until it begins to yield, its determined character and bite remaining intact. This is an interesting little memoir about a young woman who grew up in Ontario and had happy memories of her mother cooking her native food from Yugoslavia. Her mother stopped cooking elaborate meals when their business took off, but Jen forever afterwards sought out interesting foods and cultural traditions surrounding them. As her parents were mostly absent after Jen’s early years, she developed independence young and found opportunities to study abroad both for high school and college. On her breaks, she would visit the most obscure places she could find. In her twenties, she had landed herself in a high paying corporate job, however, there was little love for it. She abandoned this to begin teaching cooking classes out of her tiny flat in London.In her thirties, she goes on a largely unplanned trip to Iran, hoping to learn more of the culture and Middle Eastern cooking traditions. Immediately, Vahid, an energetic Iranian man, 6 years younger than she, sparks up conversation with her and invites her to his mother’s kitchen. Initially she is put off by him, however with time, a love interest develops. Through this relationship, a glimpse into the cultural rules regarding relationships is thoroughly explored in this land. Their relationship must remain a secret from his family and Iranians at large, until Vahid has the idea of a “temporary marriage.” They go to great lengths to get a Mullah to grant them this, so that they may be allowed to be together and have something to show the police with whom they’ve had many confrontations. Even once they’ve gone public with their relationship, it is not accepted among Vahid’s family and their being seen together causes great consternation in Vahid’s home town of Yazd.The book quickly shifts from a memoir about a love for food to a memoir about a love for a boy. It is a book about “yaaftan,” finding something beautiful in a place where it is least expected or where you had to struggle. I’ve been always interested in knowing more about the Holy City. I discovered this book in our high school library. The easy comic book like narrative immediately caught my attention because of the many facts it presented, first hand and easy to understand. I immediately wanted the Kindle edition.

I have now read all of Guy de Lisle's books, and they are a continuing education about places in the world I may never see in person. I love his style, his low-key approach, his subtle humor. He has taught me so much about the issues we all face in the world, and I would recommend these books to anyone with any curiosity at all about peace, war, isolation and its effects. Just outstanding. And my nephew loved this one too, a continuation of conversations we have had about Israel. Thank you!
