Jade Kerrion is one of my favorite authors, and its series like Daughter of Air that show why this is the case. Highly imaginative, really well written and with superb world-building and characters. That’s no less true with the series’ third book, Cursed Flame. Ashe and Varun are fantastic characters and what they go through is earth shattering. It’s also totally enjoyable and my only real criticism is that there’s a cliffhanger at the end ... and I’m going to go into withdrawal waiting for the next one. But for the fact that I’m literally dictating this review to my husband from my hospital bed I could go on and on with praises. The book definitely deserves it. Since I can’t do that I will simply note that the book is most definitely one to read, and it is easy to highly recommend. I’m definitely looking forward to the next book in this series.

Cursed Flames is just a perfect third book in this series by Jade Kerrion. I have been hooked on this series since the first book and this book has not changed the fact that I want read more about Ashe and Varun! The author has a writing style that just draws you in and makes it difficult to put this book down! This is a series page turner and it has a flow to the plot that just keeps you reading on. There is always something happening but it has a natural feel to it in a way, that never feels forced. The plot is imaginative with some great twists hidden in the plot. The pace is just perfect and with something always happening you don't even realize that the book is over sooner than you know, or want it to be for that matter!Ashe continues to grow in this third book and I am really a huge fan of our "little mermaid". I love the character development that the author continues to do on no just her but also on Varun and believe it or not, also her sidekick Jinn. There is a lot more to Jinn than meets the eye but I am sure a lot of readers are already suspecting it, question is when will the author reveal what or who is Jinn really? I for one can't wait to find out more about Jinn and it will give some more depth to this series that is for sure. The secrets ad mysteries sure seem to increase and with every secret that is solved, more seem to appear keeping you guessing and trying to figure them out BEFORE The author actually spells it out for you, since obviously it is always more fun figuring it out before you are told.This is a fantastic series so if you are interested I would recommend to start from the beginning. They are a consecutive series so it makes more sense to read them in sequence and since it is a great series you may as well just read them all.Voluntary review of Advance Reader Copy. I was given a complimentary copy of this book by the publisher.

Cursed Flame Daughters of Air #3 Jade KerrionI’ll agree with the other reviewers. Wow! Awesome!The book ties the others together. You learn about all the other things that needed something more to understand. And you learn about Gods and the underworld which is a nice side affect of reading this book! New players, new situations, new thoughts of course pepper the book with the suspense you have expected. But, why, why, why did you have to put a complete cliff hanger on the end!!! And here I thought this was a three book series! Although maybe it’ll be a spin off into a new series. Either way, the books are excellent, keep your attention-maybe a bit too much and make you want to learn more!Good job! Keep on Reading!!!

Jade Kerrion does it again!! This series has been a treat and the third book has kept the adventure going. Ashe and Varun have new problems as they try to find the portal, confront Ereshkigal and recover Ashe's son Zamir. Varun has new powers that he needs to learn to control. Ondine, Varun's ex-fiance, who was inhabited by Neti as a little girl, is now the guardian of the door and a fire elemental. She proves to be a problem in Ashe's plans every step of the way. To make matters worse, there is another threat out there facing them all.I have enjoyed every book in this series so far. Make sure you have time to read this because you may find yourself up in the wee hours of morning because you just can't put the story down. I kept telling myself I'd just get to the end of the chapter. Several chapters later, I knew that I would be going to work on very little sleep, but content in knowing what happened. This is the type of series you share with others. I highly recommend all the books in this series. Start with book 1, otherwise you miss out on amazing character building and backstory. Every book just gets better and better, we see Ashe's and Varun's relationship change and I love how Varun balances out Ashe's harshness. Even more myths are revealed in this book along with meeting new Characters that I can't wait to see where things go with them. With both Ashe and Varun you can't help but feel the passion they have for doing what they need to and the twists that come along the way. We find out more about Innana's past as well as her sisters and Jinn ... ohhh well dang I did not see that coming!! This third instalment in the Daughter of Air series continues straight after book 2, and is as full of drama, adventure, intrigue, romance, myth and magic as you could possibly wish for! I'm loving this series, and would highly recommend it to all lovers of paranormal/supernatural stories, especially those involving myths from other cultures. I've always loved Ancient Greek and Roman stories, but this series has brought Sumerian culture into that mixing bowl too, and I'm really glad for that. I read this book in just a few hours. I couldn’t put it down.I didn’t know much about the Spice Girls, but I enjoy Mel B. on America's Got Talent. Brutally Honest is just that. Some of her story was very unpleasant for me to read, but I plugged along. Never having been abused in the way she has been, and by so many men, it was difficult for me to understand why she kept falling for the same kind of abusive men. I did begin to understand how this happened to her, and I feel so much empathy for her and her daughters. I hope very much that she is now as strong as she says she is and will stay away from those types of men. I hope the drinking has stopped. I hope she continues to see Dr. Sophy until she is one hundred percent sure that she is cured of all of her addictions, including men. She’s only in her early forties. I think she’s still susceptible to falling for the same kind of guy. Be careful, Mel B!! I hope you make a ton if money with this book.

What a gut wrenching book. I cried during most of it. Melanie packs a he'll of a story but it's been a hell of a life. This is a woman I admired and thought she had everything and the best of life. Truth shall set you free. Being a abused wife myself, I know all the signs so reliving that through this book was incredibly hard and there were times I had to put it down and stop. But I am thankful that she had the courage to get this done and start her life over and be the mom her children deserve. My heart, prayers and love to put to a remarkable woman who got sucked into a terrifying experience and was able to recover and come away with her life and love. There is a special place in hell for abusers and I pray one day they all get what they deserve. May Melanie now have the life she and her children deserve. Book packs a wallup!

I wasn't a huge Spice Girls fan but I was somewhat familiar with her Spice Girls days because my little brother was a big fan. My familiarity with Mel was from her brief reality show and her time on AGT. I've always liked Mel's public persona as I've find her funny and affable. Initially, I had no plans to read the book but after hearing Mel B discuss it on TV I changed my mind.I'm glad I checked it out. Once I started the book I couldn't put it down. It only took me three days to finish it. I had no idea that Melanie's experienced so many trials and tribulations in her life. Parts of her story are hard to read but ultimately, I came away feeling relieved and proud that Mel finally had the strength to leave her ex-husband. She's a survivor in every sense of the word. I hope the next chapters in her life are filled with happiness and continued success in her career.I don't want to give anything away but the book will hold your attention even if you have just a passing interest in Mel's life. I do wish she'd talked more about her Spice Girls days but from her perspective I suppose she feels like she shared all that needed to be said. Much of the book talks about the last ten years of her life with her ex-husband and her struggle to survive his abuse. Those chapters she seems to "tell-all" but I'd say the rest of the book is measured and respectful. She's honest but doesn't share more than is really necessary. After all, she does have two young daughter's to protect. I enjoyed the book immensely.

I read tons of biographies and this one really got to me emotionally because I don't believe it's the end nor "happily ever after" for Melanie Brown and Family. Yes, it's brutally honest and I've never been in that kind of relationship because after one incident I would be gone, but that's me. With her, she seemed to want children to "fix" her problems and it seemed her life came first-her children had to follow her wherever they went, and they suffered just as much, probably more. I'm a firm believer to protect children as number 1 idea. I wasn't thrilled to read what happened to her during her choice relationships (except with Eddie Murphy-good guy) but NO, she didn't communicate with Murphy and figured I'll go back and get him...stubborn woman! Instead she ended up with men with MAJOR issues instead! Children again, suffering. If I had read, at the end, that she doesn't drink anymore, and in a program changing her life, cleaning up the past emotionally (not with riches, with emotions) then wow, but she still parties and that scares me. I pray for the children and I hope she decides to put them first. Wait till they are all over 18 years old, then look for a partner in life, great. But they are all still at risk, in my humble opinion which I know equals nothing herein. As for the book cover with her left hand exposed and no ring...what is she saying again? And that Stephen guy is someone who I would hate to even think exists in this world...but should be behind bars forever. NO, he owns a restaurant? WTF is that? I don't recommend this book to anyone unless I know they are going thru this and with a major drinking problem. I cried every night over the last few chapters for her pets and children, her father too. Read this if you like SCARY in your SPICE only!

We live in a great country, founded on freedom and equality and justice for all. I believe that, and I believe those principles form the core of our justice system. But, as Bryan Stevenson demonstrates all too clearly in Just Mercy: A Story of Justice and Redemption our system, like every human system is far from perfect. Not only is it not perfect, there are elements of evil lurking within it.Stevenson, founder of the Equal Justice Initiative (EJI) has dedicated his legal career to defending "the poor, the disfavored, the accused, the incarcerated, and the condemned." He became convinced that "the opposite of poverty is not wealth; the opposite of poverty is justice." EJI defends innocent people who have been condemned to death, minors and disabled individuals who have received unjust sentences, and others who have been overlooked or mistreated by the courts. His clients are largely poor and minority, because of "our system's disturbing indifference to inaccurate or unreliable verdicts, our comfort with bias, and our tolerance of unfair prosecutions and convictions."Stevenson tells many of his clients' stories in Just Mercy, but the one narrative that drives the book is Walter McMillian's conviction and death sentence for a murder he didn't commit. The entire groundless accusation, botched investigation, and joke of a trial boggle the mind. If ever there was someone who was put on death row for no reason, McMillian was. Stevenson was finally able to get him freed after many years, but the damage to McMillian's business, family, and mental and physical health had been done.I tend to have a positive view of law enforcement and the justice system. I want to believe that cases like McMillian's are few and far between. But to hear Stevenson tell the story, his case load is beyond what he and the EJI lawyers can handle; the prisons are full of people placed there by a corrupt, racist, biased system. I wish he would spend a little time talking about people who are in prison for life because they deserve to be there. I appreciate his sentiment that we should not "reduce people to their worst acts and permanently label them." People can and do change, and the justice system should have a strong element of reform. But if someone rapes and murders, terrorizes their neighborhood, and completely disregards human life, long prison sentences are in order.As hard on crime as I want to be (as if my opinion makes any difference) I will still stand with Stevenson's objection to the death penalty. Some may argue that if we wrongfully execute one innocent person for every hundred executions, the deterrent effect is worth that price. But to me that price is to high. (Not to mention the deterrent effect of the death penalty is questionable at best.) Just Mercy will definitely get the reader thinking about our justice system, and make us a little less eager to believe in someone's guilt when we hear about their crimes in the news. I am thankful for Stevenson and other lawyers like him who sound the trumpet for justice and mercy for the poor and marginalized. If I were a younger man, this book would inspire me to go to law school and follow in Stevenson's footsteps.Thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for the complimentary electronic review copy!

When I first started reading this book I really had no idea what to expect or why I should even take the time to read it. My tendency is to put things into "liberal" and "conservative" buckets and this one seemingly fit into the liberal bucket and I am a professed conservative. I still am but I have to say that I was moved by this story beyond my expectations. There is indeed so much injustice in this world and there is plenty of opportunity for mercy; even mercy extended in unexpected places. The plight of the poor and downtrodden is overwhelming to consider and this book provided a reason to view people's circumstances before providing condemnation. I would wholeheartedly recommend reading it.

This book is a sad book. It had horrible stories about people that were done wrong by the people of that time. They were people of color, mentally ill people, and the system failed them. We all need to be aware of this and that it happens to ALL people. It doesn't just happen to black people. It happens to all people. What my rating means is that to bring this out to the forefront and to bring what has happened to the attention of many - doesn't mean you need to bash white people or make out the police to be the bad people. I am tired of this being the only way authors seem to be able to get a point across. Try another way and you will get the information to more people that aren't turned off to the rest of the message.

As Stevenson puts it, "Presumptions of guilt, poverty, racial bias, and a host of other social, structural, and political dynamics have created a system that is defined by error, a system in which thousands of innocent people now suffer in prison." This is a system that condemns children to life imprisonment without parole, that makes petty theft a crime as serious as murder, and that has declared war on hundreds of thousands of people with substance abuse problems by imprisoning them and denying them help. Stevenson is an attorney with the Equal Justice Initiative in Montgomery, Alabama, an organization that offers free legal services to the poor and disenfranchised. His book is a sobering look at criminal justice from the perspective of those least likely to be treated fairly.JUST MERCY explores a number of devastating cases, including children as young as fourteen facing life imprisonment, and scores of people on death row - mostly poor, and mostly black - who have been unfairly convicted. But the central focus is on Walter McMillan, a black man sentenced to death for the murder of a prominent young white woman. McMillan claimed he did not commit this crime, and he had a score of alibi witnesses, but he was quickly railroaded into both a conviction and a death sentence. Stevenson spent years working to get McMillan a new trial, and the two men remained connected throughout the remainder of McMillan's life. It's a fascinating case, one that involves perjury, police corruption, a racist judge, and prosecutors more intent on protecting their political positions than finding justice.Stevenson's thesis is that justice itself is denied for the millions of Americans who are poor, non-white, mentally ill, or otherwise disenfranchised. Ours is no longer a country that sees compassion as a virtue; instead, we write harsher and harsher laws that demand longer and longer sentences for those we consider undesirables. "The true measure of our character," Stevenson writes, "is how we treat the poor, the disfavored, the accused, the incarcerated, and the condemned." And by the final page of JUST MERCY, it is quite clear that we, as Americans, have fallen short.It's rare these days to meet someone who truly dedicates himself to those least able to help themselves, especially someone who isn't after media attention or self-promotion. Stevenson's tireless efforts to give solace to the many men and women on death row are both inspirational and affirming. He isn't successful in freeing all of his clients - more than a few are executed in spite of his pleas - but what he offers them is more than just legal support. He listens to them, takes them seriously, investigates in ways the police failed to do, and gives them a voice they had otherwise been denied. In the end, Stevenson writes, "we have to reform a system of criminal justice that continues to treat people better if they are rich and guilty than if they are poor and innocent." That's a tough lesson for a world too often motivated by money, power, and political position. The people Bryan Stevenson works for have no money, no power, and no political position, but they are human beings deserving of compassion and mercy. "Each of us is more than the worst thing we've ever done," Stevenson writes, adding, "the opposite of poverty is not wealth; the opposite of poverty is justice." As Americans, we can't be proud of our justice system until it offers justice to all of our people, and not only those with money and influence. It's a hard sell in today's mercenary, "me first" environment. But Stevenson's voice is one we all need to hear. JUST MERCY is a powerful and eye-opening book. I recommend it highly.
