Leadership training and reading books on leadership is about regulating behavior. We read the leadership books and take the training to assure we are performing according to what we know. I cannot even tell you how many times someone has come up to me after a leadership class and said some form of “you reminded me of many things I know and used to do but I had gotten away from them.” Leadership is a skill that involves fundamentals and subtleties and without continual review performance suffers. Professional sports teams don’t just practice the skills and plays they already know to occupy time, if they don’t practice what they already know performance suffers. When you carry a rifle it is unnecessary to listen....5. Self-Control in little things leads to control of bigger things. For example, the reason I prohibited profanity – a small issue – during practices was because it was usually caused by frustration or anger. I felt that a player who couldn’t control his language when he got upset during a scrimmage would be more likely to lose control in more damaging ways during the heat of competition – fouling, fighting, or making other poor decisions that would almost always hurt the team..6. Hesitancy, indecisiveness, vacillation, and fear of failure are not characteristics I associate with good leadership. I told our team many times: “Be quick, but don’t hurry.” By that I meant to make a decision, take action, decide what you’re going to do and do it. Keep this word of caution in mind: “Failure to act is often the biggest failure of all.”.7. Mistakes, even failure, can be permissible so long as they do not result from carelessness or poor preparation.8. “The one who once most wisely said, ‘Be sure you’re right, then go ahead.’ Might have added this to it, ‘Be sure you are wrong before you quit.’”.9. Consistency in high performance and production is a trademark of effective and successful organizations and those who lead them. Emotionalism destroys consistency. A leader who is ruled by emotions, whose temperament is mercurial, produce a team whose trademark is roller coaster-ups and downs in performance; unpredictability and un-dependability in effort and concentration; one day good, the next day bad..16. …emotional control is a primary component of consistency, which is in turn a component of success..17. A volatile leader is like a bottle of nitroglycerine. The slightest knock and it blows up. Those around nitroglycerine or a temperamental boss spend all their time carefully tiptoeing back and forth rather than doing their jobs. It is not an environment, in my opinion conducive to winning organizations..18. Managing egos-the over- and underinflated, the forceful and the fragile- is one of the greatest challenges facing any leader..19. Explain to each team member precisely how his or her contributions connect to the welfare and success of the entire organization..20. PRIVATE AND PUBLIC PRAISE – Acknowledging top producers does not always have to be done publicly It is often effective for a leader to praise their outstanding performance when others are not around. This is an extraordinary book on leadership. The author keeps referring to things I "can" do (but cannot) with the Kindle Fire HD and features that I sure don't have on my new Kindle Fire HD. What a joke! It is impossible for any manual to be less helpful. I had to keep checking to see if he was really talking about the Kindle Fire HD. Sure mentions a lot of things my brand new Kindle Fire HD supposedly has, but doesn't, and things that I am supposed to be able to do that I have tried but can't. (And I am very computer literate.) It is absurd that I have been on the phone to customer support with questions about the Fire HD more this week than I have in the I have in the three years I have owned Kindle e-book readers. Does the writer even have a Kindle Fire HD? I have to wonder if he knows much about it because my Kindle Fire HD doesn't have the features that his does. After 2 weeks I am not sure if I like the Kindle Fire HD or not and this "manual" doesn't make me feel that I can't live without it. I so happy that I didn't have the money to spend for a more "advanced" version of this tablet.

I thought I already wrote a review on this...Well, it was a gift. I read reviews about several help books for the Kindle Fire HD before settling on this one. I decided on this book for my grandfather. The book is great...set up well for someone who has very little knowledge about the internet, computers, etc. (That's why I bought it!) I will definitely consider other books in The Missing Manual series.

Nothing new that you couldn't figure out via internet or on your own. I'm a big fan of the missing manuals but this is the first one of run into that I've found useless. All of the information you can find by just using the kindle, which is a great platform or searching the internet. I was trying to add my e-book collection and there were no real explanations here. Bummer because I like the series. If you know how to turn your kindle on, you don't need this book.

I have used and enjoyed a Kindle Keyboard for several years but I wanted to expand my horizons with the Kindle Fire HD, I asked for it last Christmas and got it; however, it was my first tablet and the learning curve was daunting. Needing a manual, I first tried the Norato beginners' book but that didn’t have the information I needed. I have been delighted with this “missing manual” by Peter Meyers and I recommend it.To teach myself how best to use the Fire HD, I went through the book step-by-step, working along with my Kindle Fire HD as I went. As a result I am now entirely comfortable with the device and its bells and whistles. Even someone who doesn’t have time to go through the manual from beginning to end as I did, should find it a most useful tool. The book is logically organized with an excellent table of contents and index and the author anticipates questions from the reader and answers them fully and with a good deal of humor. This was one of my better Amazon purchases – practical and fun to use.

I am a senior and not use to all these programs on my kindle. I didn't even know what they ment. I was so mad at Kindle for not having any kind of information book when I bought it, I almost returned it. They said it was all on line, but when you don't know to much about on line use, how are you to get the proper information. This book is great, it really lets you know how to get around your Kindle and the programs on it. I really learn new thing I could do and a easier way to install books and programs I wanted. It was worth what I paid for it.I am just sorry I had to pay extra for it. Kindle should have at least had some kind of starter manual. Thank you for this book and if any of my friends buy a Kindle I'll let them know about your book.

I'm not tech challenged, but maybe it was because my kindle is basically an android device that I had problems getting into my kindle. This book finally got me loving my Kindle. So many plain, simple instructions. Charge extra for a kindle and include it with the purchase! Now I'm not chained to my desktop or big laptop anymore. Finally.
