On New TermsI’d like to begin again. Not touch my own face, not tremble in the dark before an intruder who never arrives. Not apologize. Not scurry, not pace. Not refuse to keep notes of what meant the most. Not skirt my father’s ghost. Not abandon piano, or a book before the end. Not count, count, count and wait, poised—the control, the agony controlled—for the loss of the one, having borne, I can’t be, won’t breathe without: the foregone conclusion, the pain not yet met, the preemptive mourning without which nothing left of me but smoke.Goodbye, New York (song from the wrong side of the Hudson)You were the big fat city we called hometown You were the lyrics I sang but never wrote downYou were the lively graves by the highway in Queens the bodega where I bought black beansstacks of the Times we never read nights we never went to bedthe radio jazz, the doughnut cart the dogs off their leashes in Tompkins Square ParkYou were the tiny brass mailbox key the joy of “us” and the sorrow of “me”You were the balcony bar in Grand Central Station the blunt commuters and their destinationthe post-wedding blintzes at 4 a.m. and the pregnant waitress we never saw againYou were the pickles, you were the jar You were the prizefight we watched in a barthe sloppy kiss in the basement at Nell’s the occasional truth that the fortune cookie tellsSinatra still swinging at Radio City You were ugly and gorgeous but never prettyalways the question, never the answer the difficult poet, the aging dancerthe call I made from a corner phone to a friend in need, who wasn’t at homethe fireworks we watched from a tenement roof the brash allegations and the lack of any proofmy skyline, my byline, my buzzer and door now you’re the dream we lived beforeNot Pleasant but TrueThis afternoon when the bus turned hard by the graveyard, the stones sugared with snow, I wanted to go there, underground. You’re thirteen weeks old. Cold shock, as never wished before:to die and be buried, close under the packed earth, safe for an eternal instant from my constant, fevered fear thatyou’d die. A musical house, with more children than you planned for, a smallest hand, and fingersof that hand closing on one of yours, making a handle, pulling the lever gaily down, ringing in the firstjackpot of many, with coins and cries, heavenly noise, a crashing pile of minor riches—And if the worst thing imaginable were to happen where does the happiness go?The melody flown (where?), you think you wouldn’t live one more day. But you would.Days don’t stop. You toss your glove at the moon, you don’t know what may come down.

Love her poems. Motherhood. Marriage. Very relatedable.

I have to strongly disagree with the previous reviewer. I found Ms. Garrison's poems to be uplifting, encouraging and as bright as the noonday sun.I came away from the book with a smile on my face and feeling optimistic about the state of Motherhood in America today. Nobody has perfect kids, we all know that, and yet....we all want to believe our kids *are* the perfect ones. I know my two daughters are as perfect as perfect can be...as are their children. Don't be scared away from this book by one negative review. The poems are refreshing and upbeat and are about one woman's unique, real life. She doesn't claim to be Edna St. Vincent Millay...she just wrote luminous little poems about her own life experience as only she could do. I'm glad I heard Ms. Garrison on NPR and found her poetry.

I loved Deborah Garrison's first book of poems, heard them read on NPR one day as I drove over the long miles between Charlotte and Charlottesville. I still remember sitting in the car and scribbling her name, the book's name, on a receipt. I bought the book immediately and treasured them for their melancholy, their understated humor. When I saw she'd written a book of poems about motherhood, well, I *knew* I would love it.I suppose I knew wrong. Maybe it's just me, that I have no perfect attitude towards my children, that my two boys are far from storybook quality. Think of them more as dramatic novel material, stunningly beautiful, full of tension, rife with passion, that runs the gamut from dark to silly. But Deborah's poetry about motherhood is treacle. Simple sugars that may taste good for a moment on the tongue but then clog your throat with their cloying sweetness. You see, Deborah's poetry has lost its melancholy. Her pieces about strangers ("I saw you walking") have that quiet introspective quality that I missed so. But her treatment of her children, of motherhood, is all roses and bliss. I find myself angry for being brought to tears by "A Drink in the Night", which isn't poetry, but a nicely-worded treatment of a cute story about her daughter, one that should go in the album to repeat at her wedding, one day, but not as literature. There is no wrong in these poems, not in "A Human Calculation" (full of self-sacrifice and adoration), not in "Both Square and Round." I love that Deborah loves her children so. But good poetry it's not. When she forgets that all she is about is wide-eyed motherly bliss, she's funny ("To the Man in the Loden Coat") or packs vast meaning into a single moment ("Pink and White"). Her poem about having a third child ("September Poem") is almost what I wish it would be. What she is arching for, I think, to be Sharon Olds.Sharon Olds she's certainly not. I won't read her birth poem at blessing ways. Her breastfeeding sonnet (much though I appreciate a good homage to breastfeeding) is too light, too full of sugar, "you grow so you / can go from me, I know, yet I drink in / the sweet increase that will divide us."I wanted so much more.

I am not a person who reads poems. I just never thought it was a good way to pass the time. I picked this up at the library and I swear it just popped into my hands! The way she writes is how I think, but can't express myself. She puts into words what my heart thinks. I love how she talks about nursing her children, about life/death, about being overcome with worry for her children, etc. I read it three times last night and was reading it to my husband in bed. I will buy this book for myself. It is terrific and I will get her other books from the library.

This book spoke to me. Perhaps because I too am a mother who lives in New Jersey and commutes to NYC on a daily basis, but I think anyone who has moved on to the next stage of their life, will enjoy Ms. Garrison's wry observations of modern life and parenthood. The poems are both moving and funny and she writes in an accessible, conversational tone. This book was a great treat. I am considering buying it for my other mommy-friends.

This is a book to read and keep. Wonderful words. I would really like to see more by this author.

Such a great commentary! I love how it gives you the theology and history and references to bible verses. This is a wonderful easy to understand commentary. A must have for anyone!

I've used this text, as well as The New Bible Dictionary, for two decades teaching Sunday School. I have many reference texts to help preparing my lessons, but if I had to choose only one or two to have this one would be one of the pair. I have gifted it to visiting missionaries to help in their teaching, both for its quality and because the single volume can be carried in their return luggage. It is somewhat brief in its exposition of each passage, but in my experience it's the best authoritative, single volume Biblical commentary on the market.

I have used this commentary for years and find the material accessible for laymen and in-depth enough for pastors doing research on a Biblical passage. I liked it so much that I bought this for a friend in my church to help encourage his continued growth and discipleship.

I had heard a lot of good things about this commentary. Very happy with this purchase.

I am a Pastor and have a Master's Degree and Doctorate. For my personal study, I use this commentary and have bought it for 2 people (laypeople) for their personal study. It explains so much and yet is to the point more often than not. It is the best out there if you want just one commentary for Bible Study/Sunday School prep. Personally, it is way below what a Pastor will use for full blown Bible Study. Professors would be bored with it. But for most church people, this book should be on their shelf. If you have a High School Diploma, you should be able to understand it. Not for youth, unless they are deep or exceptional. Then, they would really benefit from it too. Just my opinion to help you, dear friend of the Bible!

I've had this for almost 10 years and I still love it. It's a great reference as a Bible study supplement.

Excellent, most tromp lets commentary I have ever seen,

This is a great commentary for someone starting out in studying the Bible. (Much better than, say, the Bible Knowledge Commentary or Wycliffe.) The introductory article "Approaching the Bible" is a must read for all Christians, young and old alike. Donald Carson is an erudite scholar who has a tremendous ability to bring material from the seminary classroom to laypeople avoiding both overly technical language and a condescending attitude. He is truly a gifted teacher.I have a pretty decent library of commentaries. My approach to the Bible is conservative, although I do read and benefit from commentaries outside of this discipline. I have given this commentary as a gift a number of times to new believers, and recommend it highly.

This is one of the most accessible books available for new users of rigid heddle looms and also for those more experienced weavers looking to expand their skills. The book's author is like having a good friend at your side, anticipating your questions, offering suggestions, encouraging your efforts. Liz Gipson doesn't talk down to new weavers or make them feel like outsiders to the craft, unlike a few weaving book authors out there. You'll want to keep at it, to improve, to try your hand at something new. But this friendly attitude doesn't mean the book lacks substance, far from it. Some really good instructions and lovely diverse projects are included. Want to weave a rug? Work hand manipulated designs? Weave a shawl? Towels? Scarves? Bags? Placemats? Pillows? Just to add frosting to the cake, Ms. Gipson actively maintains a couple of websites where users of the book can ask questions and participate in weave alongs for projects from Weaving Made Easy. Check out Yarnworker, on line and on Facebook.

It was much easier to understand than the previous books I had looked at. I would recommend it to others. Also it explains the rigid hedge loom better than what I had previously read. I have taught myself how to do other handcrafts by a book, and feel I can do the same with this one.

This is a great book for both new weavers and experienced weavers. It has a few good projects in it but not as many as I thought unless I skipped some by accident. It says 17 projects and it might be but it didn't seem like that many to me which it might be cause some of them are combined together. I do wish each one would have been wrote out separately but over all this is a good book. It describes everything with great detail and does have some pictures of some of the steps. I would recommend this book.

Have used this book the most of all my weaving books. Just learned to weave this past month - and loving it. This book is perfect or the beginner.

Plain and simple, this is a perfect book for the beginning weaver! It is my "go-to" book for any questions I have about how to weave on my rigid heddle loom. The directions are clearly written and the pictures are top notch. This book should be in every weaver's library. Kudos to Ms. Gipson.

This is a good book for the very beginner weaver. There are plenty of photos to learn from as well as easy to understand text. I like the fact that there are easy projects included in the book. The projects gives a new person a sense of confidence because they can be completed without much confusion.

The best book on weaving I have found. I'm a beginner weaver and found this book to be my Bible on weaving.

I've owned this book for a year and a half, and I love it. The projects are easy to follow and adapt if I need to change size or material. It's also my go-to book for various techniques and terms. As a beginner with my rigid heddle loom, it's been helpful.

I was born toward the end of the Iran hostage crisis, so clearly don’t remember it. Although I’ve known it as an important part of modern American history, it’s mostly been through movies like Argo or familial denigration of Jimmy Carter. Mark Bowden’s Guests of the Ayatollah more than makes up for any former lack of understanding. Bowden painstakingly goes through the 444 days of the crisis from the planning by Iranian student groups up until the release. He relates stories from several hostages of different backgrounds and positions in the embassy, which gives it a feeling of completeness. The story is also deeply enriched by interviews with some of the Iranians involved. While the writing is not sympathetic to the Iranian students, their perspective gives important context to the whole affair. Likewise, the American story doesn’t happen just in the embassy compound, Bowden covers how the crisis played out for the Carter Administration and families across the United States. The book reads like a novel in many places, as the story is truly incredible. Afterwards, I enjoyed looking up where some of the main characters are now – some of the Iranians got their first taste of politics in the takeover and have risen quite far in domestic politics. It’s also a humbling reminder that America cannot control all, nor can it always rely on allies for support.

It was too long and not because it was overly detailed. It was repetitive at times and some of the details were interesting but felt out of order. The first third of the book was really great. The story of the hostage takeover and first few months of captivity were excellent. The story of the end game and ultimate release was good as well and could have been more detailed even. He did get slightly political and took a shot at Reagan but I don't think it was intentional. The middle just started to drag. At times I felt like a hostage to it myself. I am not one to "skip ahead" but I got close a few times. The discussion regarding the rescue was excellent and perfectly detailed I thought. The other thing that might have been missing was discussion of what some of our allies did or did not do, could have done, or how their citizens considered the crisis.I would recommend the book but skipping ahead some in the middle would not be frowned upon.

Fantastic book, well written, researched, fast paced. I learned a lot from this detailed accounting of the Iranian hostage taking that so paralyzed America for 444 days. Bowden went to Iraq, spoke with key participants from there, thus shedding light on their thoughts, motivations and observations of what happened then and since. Pictures and maps are excellent!Narrative Journalism is alive and well as long as Mark is out there digging into the facts, interviewing folks, seeing the places - his work really shows in the final product - his books. Absolutely must reading for anyone who grew up around that time, historians or anyone curious to see one aspect of how things in the Middle East got to be the way they are today

This is a fascinating, gripping non-fiction account of the Iran Hostage Crisis of 1979-1981. I bought this book after seeing "Argo." This book is definitely not an account of the true "Argo" story; in fact, the six workers who were the subject of that film are mentioned only very briefly in this book (as in, maybe ten sentences). This book gives a brief background of the events leading up to the overthrow of the shah and the Iranian Revolution in the late 70s. Prior to reading this book, I only knew that there had been a revolution and that it had involved a retreat to a more fundamentalist Islamist state. That was the extent of my knowledge of the revolution. I knew nothing about the crisis itself. "Guests of the Ayatollah" starts with a concise history of shah's rule, the revolution, and America's involvement in putting the shah into power. There is definitely more in-depth reading available on the subject, but the details provided in the book gave me enough background to sufficiently understand the political climate at the time of the takeover. The book weaves the story of the takeover with the ongoing political change in Iran, the stories of the hostages' experiences in captivity, the failed rescue attempt by a U.S. special forces outfit, and the Carter Administration's response to the crisis. The book jumps around among these different topics, but it's in chronological order, is easy to follow, and is very engrossing. The only real issue I had was keeping track of the various hostages. The author doesn't provide accounts of all 52 hostages who spent the entire 444 days in captivity. But he follows enough people, who for the most part all seemed to have similar diplomatic roles, that I did get their jobs/titles/responsibilities confused. It turns out that this doesn't matter much - you become acquainted with the hostages throughout the book as they endure their captivity, and the author re-references some of their background details. Some other reviews of this book have complained that the descriptions about the hostages' daily life got tired and tedious. I did not find that to be the case. I found that reading about how they developed communications systems when they couldn't talk, interacted with the guards, and got on each others' nerves was extremely interesting. Different people responded differently to the captivity, and the ways some of them tried to torment their guards were actually pretty amusing. The inside account of the Carter Administration's approach to the crisis was also very interesting. I walked away from this book feeling as though Carter made decisions based on what would preserve lives, and not what was politically advantageous. One final note: I recommend buying this book on an e-reader if possible. I ordered the paperback version, and it's pretty hefty. So I returned it and bought the e-book. The Kindle version was properly formatted and contained all the same pictures as the paperback version. (There aren't many photos in this book. If you are looking for pictures of all the hostages, you won't find that here.)

I was recommended to read this book by a friend and am glad I did. playing poker for the past 10 years, it is really hard to come across ideas that are fresh and easily applicable. Read this and you'll start banking immediately.

Having read other body language books, rd one offers some unique perspectives on the link between how people react in different situations.
