I had the third edition of this book, from 2009, and thought that it would be helpful to upgrade to the 5th edition. I'm an experienced grant-writer, having secured federal and state grants for economic development, research and the arts.This book is a comprehensive overview of the grant-writing process. Dr. Browning takes the you through the complex process of applying for federal grants, and includes topics such as registering for the government databases (SAM), and the question of how to budget for administrative and facilities costs. Since federal grants are probably the most complicated of all funding requests, it is really helpful to map out that process. Corporate and foundation grant applications will tend to be less involved.If anything, the book emphasizes that you really have to have your act together *before* applying for a grant. Figure out your partners, your real costs of delivery, the demographics of those who will benefit from a grant, and be able to articulate the background and mission of your organization and the purpose for which you are seek funding.The book has substantial advice on program planning, data gathering and how to evaluate your funded program.Edition 5, from 2014 identifies an upcoming trend. Many foundations and corporate funders now request a "letter of inquiry" or concept letter as the initial contact. They will review such letters and and if interested will invite the applicant to submit a full proposal. This book is quite helpful, and I am impressed by its comprehensiveness and detail. For many persons, it is a one-stop-shop for information on how to write grants successfully. I am especially impressed by the section on “Digging Up Grant Funding Opportunities” which provides lots of information on how to do just that. The chapter on exploring Grants.gov is particularly notable, as many books on grants barely touch on this important government website. But while the book will be helpful for many persons, this does not include faculty working in college and university settings. Little information is provided that would be helpful to faculty seeking grant awards. For faculty, Cynthia Carr’s “The Nuts & Bolts of Grant Writing” provides detailed and very helpful guidance for successfully writing grants in college and university contexts (including navigating Grants.gov). Take my word for it, writing successful academic grants is a specialty area that requires a book focused on the subject, which Carr’s book does outstandingly. So if your faculty, Carr’s book is the way to go.

Wonderfully written and very helpful. This book is full of practical advice. I was lucky enough to attend Dr. Brown's Grant Writing Boot Camp - it was a highly educational experience. Dr. Brown is the best! I would recommend this book and Dr. Brown's classes to anyone interested in writing grants.

I bought this book to learn about grant writing and to see if this was something I wanted to do. The format of the book makes it easy to understand the step by step guide to finding and obtaining grant monies. There are also many references in the book to online resources. I found that it made the overwhelming task of researching how to write grants, less scary and stressful.

Leadership training and reading books on leadership is about regulating behavior. We read the leadership books and take the training to assure we are performing according to what we know. I cannot even tell you how many times someone has come up to me after a leadership class and said some form of “you reminded me of many things I know and used to do but I had gotten away from them.” Leadership is a skill that involves fundamentals and subtleties and without continual review performance suffers. Professional sports teams don’t just practice the skills and plays they already know to occupy time, if they don’t practice what they already know performance suffers. For example, the reason I prohibited profanity – a small issue – during practices was because it was usually caused by frustration or anger. Hesitancy, indecisiveness, vacillation, and fear of failure are not characteristics I associate with good leadership. I told our team many times: “Be quick, but don’t hurry.” By that I meant to make a decision, take action, decide what you’re going to do and do it. Keep this word of caution in mind: “Failure to act is often the biggest failure of all.”.7. Mistakes, even failure, can be permissible so long as they do not result from carelessness or poor preparation.8. “The one who once most wisely said, ‘Be sure you’re right, then go ahead.’ Might have added this to it, ‘Be sure you are wrong before you quit.’”.9. The best leaders are lifelong learners, they take measures to create organizations that foster and inspire learning throughout. The most effective leaders are those who realize it’s what you know after you know it all that counts most..10. A leader who is ruled by emotions, whose temperament is mercurial, produce a team whose trademark is roller coaster-ups and downs in performance; unpredictability and un-dependability in effort and concentration; one day good, the next day bad..16. …emotional control is a primary component of consistency, which is in turn a component of success..17. A volatile leader is like a bottle of nitroglycerine. The slightest knock and it blows up. Those around nitroglycerine or a temperamental boss spend all their time carefully tiptoeing back and forth rather than doing their jobs. It is not an environment, in my opinion conducive to winning organizations..18. Managing egos-the over- and underinflated, the forceful and the fragile- is one of the greatest challenges facing any leader..19. Explain to each team member precisely how his or her contributions connect to the welfare and success of the entire organization..20. PRIVATE AND PUBLIC PRAISE – Acknowledging top producers does not always have to be done publicly It is often effective for a leader to praise their outstanding performance when others are not around. The author keeps referring to things I "can" do (but cannot) with the Kindle Fire HD and features that I sure don't have on my new Kindle Fire HD. What a joke! It is impossible for any manual to be less helpful. I had to keep checking to see if he was really talking about the Kindle Fire HD. Sure mentions a lot of things my brand new Kindle Fire HD supposedly has, but doesn't, and things that I am supposed to be able to do that I have tried but can't. (And I am very computer literate.) It is absurd that I have been on the phone to customer support with questions about the Fire HD more this week than I have in the I have in the three years I have owned Kindle e-book readers. Does the writer even have a Kindle Fire HD? I have to wonder if he knows much about it because my Kindle Fire HD doesn't have the features that his does. After 2 weeks I am not sure if I like the Kindle Fire HD or not and this "manual" doesn't make me feel that I can't live without it. I so happy that I didn't have the money to spend for a more "advanced" version of this tablet.

I thought I already wrote a review on this...Well, it was a gift. I read reviews about several help books for the Kindle Fire HD before settling on this one. I decided on this book for my grandfather. The book is great...set up well for someone who has very little knowledge about the internet, computers, etc. (That's why I bought it!) I will definitely consider other books in The Missing Manual series.

Nothing new that you couldn't figure out via internet or on your own. I'm a big fan of the missing manuals but this is the first one of run into that I've found useless. All of the information you can find by just using the kindle, which is a great platform or searching the internet. I was trying to add my e-book collection and there were no real explanations here. Bummer because I like the series. If you know how to turn your kindle on, you don't need this book.

I have used and enjoyed a Kindle Keyboard for several years but I wanted to expand my horizons with the Kindle Fire HD, I asked for it last Christmas and got it; however, it was my first tablet and the learning curve was daunting. Needing a manual, I first tried the Norato beginners' book but that didn’t have the information I needed. I have been delighted with this “missing manual” by Peter Meyers and I recommend it.To teach myself how best to use the Fire HD, I went through the book step-by-step, working along with my Kindle Fire HD as I went. As a result I am now entirely comfortable with the device and its bells and whistles. Even someone who doesn’t have time to go through the manual from beginning to end as I did, should find it a most useful tool. The book is logically organized with an excellent table of contents and index and the author anticipates questions from the reader and answers them fully and with a good deal of humor. This was one of my better Amazon purchases – practical and fun to use.

I am a senior and not use to all these programs on my kindle. I didn't even know what they ment. I was so mad at Kindle for not having any kind of information book when I bought it, I almost returned it. They said it was all on line, but when you don't know to much about on line use, how are you to get the proper information. This book is great, it really lets you know how to get around your Kindle and the programs on it. I really learn new thing I could do and a easier way to install books and programs I wanted. It was worth what I paid for it.I am just sorry I had to pay extra for it. Kindle should have at least had some kind of starter manual. Thank you for this book and if any of my friends buy a Kindle I'll let them know about your book.

The Age of Bede: Revised Edition is an excellent companion to "The Anglo Saxon Chronicles" which was at one time accounting the days directly from the Birth of Christ till King Henry II, some editions cover up till king Henry III. This text seems a bit limited compared with the chronicles but remember that the Chronicles became a sort of "News/Gossip" weekly paper and was written by many Ecclesiastical authors, Monks and scholars while Bede's History of Briton was authored by one Monk. It will take me years before I can actually review this competently but I was asked to review this edition. Good reading for a glimpse of what were once considered "Dark" ages for our lack of knowledge on a time period that was difficult to understand due to a lack of anthropological remnants. The age was not necessarily Dark, but our understanding was. Thanks the to deciphered text the Dark Ages are becoming lightened. Excellent.

This edition is comprised of the venerable Bede's "Life of Cuthbert" and the "Lives of the Abbots of Wearmouth and Jarrow; the priest Eddius Stephanus' "Life of Wilfrid;" and also included is the "Voyage of St Brendan" and the "History of Abbot Ceolfrith." These works brim with saintly tails of healings and exorcisms, and of prophecies and portents. These books contain some interesting historical information as well: such as the spread of Christianity on the British Isles during the sixth and seventh centuries. The introduction provides both a comprehensive look at the individuals who wrote these books and a general picture of they age they lived in. These books will no doubt be a fascinating read for anyone interested in the history of Christianity in Britain, or just in good simple hagiography.

Anyone interested in early medieval England should own this book. Includes several classics of Anglo-Saxon literature.

However, a perfect understanding of the rules, fast thinking and quick reflexes are still needed to extract the stated profits. This bonus book is aptly ST patterns on steroids!!

I LOVE Mr. Poltoratskiy's series on his ST patterns. I am still studying them but I see so much potential in his method. I own all 4 of his books. If you're interested in his books I highly suggest getting the first one to start to understand the foundation and then the following 3 to support that. He shows numerous details and examples of his system in action in each of the books. The method does require attention to detail and some studying but then again everything that is worth it requires this as well. He has also been VERY responsive to questions I have had when emailing him. Very happy with my purchases.

May be a bit repetitious in parts, however, certainly a worthwhile compendium for the alternate health practitioner ! Thank you !

Here's why I like this book:1) In depth yet accessible language. In many cases, anatomical words that might be new to certain readers are described in parenthesis. Failing that, the book has a full glossary of all medical/anatomical words that appear in the text.2) Excellent description of execution of AK muscle testing procedure. It's worth noting that different forms of AK use different methods. The one used in this text is quite easy to 'feel'. However, because it involves a maximal contraction of the target muscle, it can be difficult to use on particularly sore muscle groups.3) In depth descriptions of corrective procedures used in (this form of) AK. These include some good soft tissue manipulation.4) The muscle sedation points are particularly effective for symptomatic pain reduction.5) Excellent description of therapy localization-- this can save the practitioner a lot of time.6) The only resource I'm aware of for this version of AK. There aren't many resources that are useful to the practitioner anyway, the only other complete resource I'm aware of being 'Touch For Health'. This one (AK) is quite different from that (TFH), and so makes a useful if contrasting compliment to TFH.7) Useful appendix that includes an example of a complete AK session.8) The only source I've found that deals with muscles that 'refuse' to respond to stimulus intended to reduce over facilitation (hypertonicity, both localized and systemic).9) Solid and self-contained.10) Contains some treatment modalities not contained elsewhere.There isn't really anything I dislike about the book or found incomplete.

I'm a layperson. No medical back ground, but I tend to self treat unless nothing less than RX intervention is needed. I'm enjoying the Applied Kinesiology text book. It is helping to fill in the physiology base that I lack. Very good, readable and detailed information. Would like it to include an extensive index in its next revised edition.

A good book to osteopaths and chiropractors. Interesting but a bit heavy to read, not for the "normal" public.

Covers the basics well and goes in depth on some aspects particularly well.A good solid text which will serve those with appropriate training or those whose level of study is reasonably advanced. The book assumes that the reader has a good anatomy/physiology base,and that is as it should be. If you don't have that you really have no business in this study.Practitioners who,like me,have all of David Walther's Applied Kinesiology books,will find large amounts of the work repetitive.In fact the Walther publications are referred to throughout.Still, a valuable tool worthy of a place in any busy clinic.

A well objective manual for who it desires to be introduced in the Applied Kinesiology. It is good material for who is initiated in the subject, good written and with didactic illustrations. For bigger deepening, one has other books.

It should be "Unsa/Unsa'y imong pangalan".Kinsa - WhoUnsa - Whatthis is a very common mistake with people trying to learn Bisaya, I've heard this a million times before. (I even hear this from other Cebuanos) It's a mistake that no one bothers to correct coz most Bisaya people hates correcting others because they don't wanna be labeled as a know-it-all, and sometimes we think that it might offend the person. Bisaya people hates being frank. It's okay if you make or are going to make this mistake, people will understand so don't feel bad. But it is better to learn the right word to use if you want to learn to keep everyone esp yourself from getting confused. other than that, this book seems very helpful to those who wants to start learning Bisaya/Cebuano.

I'm not finished reading (and listening) to this first Soulless tale, but had to stop long enough to commend Ms. Carriger on her prolific, detailed and hilarious story. I've been rather unwell for several months and everything I've been reading has done nothing to impress my mood. Until discovering this book. Her characters are written so realistically that I can clearly see them. Very well fleshed out. Every scene, mood and thought is fresh. The ENTIRE nature of the lead character is (to me, anyway) very unusual from ANY I've read. The dialogue between the main character and a supporting character is downright hysterical. My first favorite part is the lady-like manner by which our leading lady handles the uncouth assumptions of a supernatural boor. She DOES offer him the opportunity to redeem himself and what results had my laughing so hard I didn't need to work my abs today!I bought the narration so I could do other things as I listened and am in love with the narrator and hope Ms. Carriger continues using her for subsequent books.No. I was not paid or anything for my review-I just REALLY love my new treasure in this book and new author.

I had higher expectations for this book, but found it a bit frustrating. I had thought that any romance in it was going to be more satirical of the genre (as it is what they usually devolve to), but when more than half the book was devoted to it, and what was said wasn't particularly exaggerated or satirical at all... then I can only assume that expectation was erroneous. Too many interactions and discussions about their attractions or romantic formalities, with scenes mainly reduced to, "Oh... a MAN! Tee hee!". While the main character initially states to believe the opposite (preferring a sense of independence and not caring for romance), the fact that she still eventually falls into those tropes undercut that initial character development. (Same issue I have with Pride and Prejudice)But I stuck through it as a fan of the supernatural elements. Some nice world - building in here, but the characters were lacking. Especially the main one, Miss Tarrabotti (whose name is said about 150 times per chapter... whatever happened to pronouns?). She just wasn't very active as a protagonist. Events simply happened to her, mostly out of coincidence, or from others pursuing her for whatever reason. Her presence at the climactic set piece came out of coincidence and thats just not interesting. I wanted her to be more actively investigating the events, after the first scene... but she basically stood back to try and act "proper". In the end, when another compliments her by saying, "you've proven to be a good investigator", I had to audibly exclaim out, "No... she didnt!" Because she didn't do much "investigating" at all... at best it was gossip with direct questions to her friends.But if you do like what is basically wish fulfillment romance from Victorian times, and some do... and need no more than that. (Which is fine... there's a lot of stuff i do like which also serves as wish fulfillment, too.) Then this might hit the spot for you. Just not for me.

To not put too fine a point on it, I absolutely adored Soulless! It is a smart, funny, sometimes sexy little morsel of steampunk romance brain candy. Now, first off, when you see the word "romance" in the description, please don't jump to the conclusion that I would have: that the book is chockablock with hot, steamy naughtiness. Now, in all honesty, it does have it's share of hot, steamy naughtiness (it is part romance when all is said and done, although it really has only one outright sex scene in the entire book), but it doesn't read like every action our heroine is taking is trying to lead her to her next tryst; this is Victorian England, after all, and there are certain rules and regulations one must follow before such scandalous behavior can ensue! What we have here, really, is a smart and sexy heroine who can not only hold her own against vampires and werewolves (she kills a vampire with her parasol, after all), but who can still manage to uphold the highest of societies standards and etiquette, often at the same time.Soulless is a clever book, and the notion of vampires, werewolves and ghosts being accepted parts of Victorian society is a unique approach to the urban fantasy. How our preternatural heroine, Alexia Tarabotti, falls into all this as someone without a soul who can negate the powers of the supernatural makes her all the more an extraordinary character. In fact, all of the characters are well polished gems and each stands out in their own distinct way.Carriger's writing is laugh-out-loud funny in some instances and solid throughout. I found it a refreshing read and a highly promising good start for this debut author. I'm anxiously awaiting the second in the series, Changeless.
