I love food, so as soon as I saw the gorgeous piece of salmon nesting on a bed of greens on the cover of "Simply Scandinavian, Traveling In Time With Finnish Cuisine And Nature," I was excited to get my hands on a copy. While I have to admit I didn't have a clue about Finnish cuisine, that picture was enough to pique my interest.I was thrilled when I discovered that this cookbook is more than a collection of Tero Kallio's recipes. It's a stunning book that will teach you a bit about Finland through images and food. Good food engages all of the senses and Kimmo Saira's pictures will have you drooling in anticipation as you flip through. Another thing I really appreciate is the way this collection is organized. Anyone who has had the pleasure of picking a tomato off of the vine in the summer can tell you the importance of eating seasonally and this book guides you through all four seasons on a culinary journey.While pretty pictures are nice, what really counts in the end is the food you produce and both items I made were fantastic. Since it's been nearly 100 degrees every day, I started with the Lemon and Lime Sorbet, which was easy and refreshing. While I sadly couldn't track down the Sal Ammoniac squares need to make the accompanying sauce, it was fantastic by itself. Hopefully I can find that missing ingrediant in the future to enjoy it as intended by the author. Regardless, it was a quick and easy summer dessert.I also couldn't resist trying the Grilled Raw Spiced Salmon with a green pea salad. It's a fantastic summer dinner because you don't need to turn on the stove for more than a couple of minutes. I loved the horseradish cream which is reminiscint of wasabi, but offered a fresh burst of flavor thanks to the green peas.Both recipes were easy to follow and the results were well received by everyone. The only thing I should point out for those of you who are used to American cookbooks is that the ingrediants are measured using the metric system. While nothing I made required exact measurement and I'm used to converting because of my work, you may have to take an extra five minutes to figure out how much of everything you'll need before starting for recipes requiring precision. From what I've made so far, it will be worth it!After reading through this beautiful book and trying a couple of recipes, I'm sold on the food of Finland. While I most likely will not be serving Reindeer with Cloudberries at my next dinner party, there are a number of recipes I'm looking forward to trying out. Plus, even though some of the ingredients may be difficult to find here, I think the techniques and concepts will translate to my local ingredients just fine!

"Simply Scandinavian - Travelling in Time with Finnish Cuisine and Nature" by Tero Kallio and Kimmo Saira is a feast for the eyes and the stomach. The authors claim to take readers on a journey of two dimensions: tastes and time. Boy, do they succeed.The gorgeous photography sets off the more than 40 recipes included in the book. Kallio and Saira divide the recipes by season, and further by appetizers, main courses and desserts, with accompanying photos of the recipes and Finnish scenery. The authors point out that "Simply Scandinavian" is a picture book and that the recipes, some of which combine the old and new, are mostly Finnish dishes with a smidgeon of Italian, Russian and other cuisines thrown in.Readers will learn how to prepare dishes of reindeer, rabbit, salmon, crayfish, beef, lamp, cep mushrooms and more. I did have to look up some of the ingredients in the recipes because I was unfamiliar with them. With each recipe, the authors recommend a beverage ranging from pinot noir to champagne to cold milk to specialty drinks, etc. One of the recipes that sounds interesting is reindeer with cloudberries. I would like to try that someday if I were to visit Finland. Some of the dessert and drink recipes like the rhubarb smoothie and blueberry cheese-cake I may attempt to create at home.In sum, "Simply Scandinavian" is a breathtaking picture book that readers will enjoy for both the recipes and photography. I recommend it wholeheartedly.

I recommend this book as a gift for anyone who is into Scandinavian culture, design, nature etc. The recipes are a great mixture of tradition and modern, and the pictures are absolutely beautiful. The book serves well as a coffee table book which people will love to flick through again and again but I warmly recommend trying out the recipes too, you will amaze your friends with these fantastic tastes and love the Scandinavian experience, I promise.

Recent revelations that the NSA seems to be spying on virtually everyone on the planet comes as little surprise to anyone who has read this book - the NSA has been a power unto itself seemingly unaccountable to Congress since the agency's inception and the extent of its technological spying tool kit, something Bamford goes into great detail about, is somewhat terrifying.The best parts of the book are about the agency's involvement in certain geopolitical events. The most damning was Israel's murderous attack on the USS Liberty during the '67 War, including the failure of Congress, or anyone else in D.C., to hold the Israelis to account to this day. Eisenhower's use of electronic eavesdropping and over flights of the USSR is covered in great detail, including a seemingly very provocative flight of multiple RB-47 aircraft over the Soviet's northern regions, a move that could easily have been interpreted as a surprise nuclear attack - had the Soviets had radars in that region, that they didn't. Ike comes across as a bit of a madman with his constant probing of Soviet air defenses and here I'd be a bit critical of what the author left out: Eisenhower did not believe the reports he was getting from the U.S. military about the Soviet's bomber or ICBM nuclear capabilities; the country simply didn't have the economic capacity to carry out such an effort, something that was becoming increasingly clear from photographic over flights of various air bases and missile sites. Once Ike had sufficient proof about the inadequacies of the Soviet threat he planned on launching a peace offensive, basically telling the Soviets to get real. One more mission was required to make this case, and it was flown by Gary Powers. One final nail in the coffin of our Vietnam disaster was the total disregard Westmoreland & Co had for the NVA's signals intelligence program, one that was quite sophisticated. The U.S. military refused to believed the gooks had this capacity and broadcast the details of upcoming missions, including B-52 strikes, in the clear with disastrous results.

Extremely interesting book about NSA and it's roots. Having been part of that program back in the 60's while serving with the USAFSS made it pretty fascinating reading, learned much more that I ever knew about that branch of the USAF and how they tied into NSA.

this book opened up my eyes about so many events that went on with our government and that of others. the truth shall set you free and this book helps clear up a lot of questions many of us have had about what actually happened with regards several incidents regarding intelligence mishaps in vietnam and korea and israel. this book filled in many blanks about organizations many of us worked in yet still did not know the big picture.

An illuminating look behind the curtain at an agency that was unknown for so long. Bamford's history of the NSA reveals so many AMAZING secrets that were classified until shortly before his book was published:- Eisenhower frequently sent fighter/bomber formations into Soviet airspace to see how far they could get before being detected, and how quickly the Soviet air defenses could react. This provocative action led to aircraft being shot down on several occasions before they could get out of Soviet airspace, and lives were lost. This finally ended when Gary Powers' U-2 was shot down.-The reason we wanted the UN in New York? To make spying on everyone easier!-The USS Liberty saw Israelis massacre 150 Egyptian POWs... so the Israelis tried to sink it, fully knowing it was a U.S. gov't ship.All in all, a very readable, very informative book. While every page doesn't have jaw-dropping secrets from US history, there are enough to ensure you'll have fun while learning a bit of history.One excellent point of education was the many disasters in our history resulting from agencies not sharing information. One thing Bush did right was making sure that something like 9/11 will never happen again because of this inter-service rivalry.A very enjoyable book. The only reason I didn't give it 5 stars is that it's not as cutting edge as when I first read it. (Body of Secrets was published within one-two years of many classified documents being made public.)

Ok, so I've got a couple gripes about this book. First off, the title: Anatomy of the Ultra-Secret National Security Agency. This book is much more of an operational history, rather than an anatomy of the agency. It contains almost no mention of any detailed organizational structure. About the only anatomy you get are the basic divisions. Communist Russian, Communist Non-Russian, and Non-Communist. Also I thought there would be much more in-depth technical detail. This however was also not the case. The second gripe is the recycling of material used in The Puzzle Palace. I already own a copy of that book, and have no real desire to re-read information I already own. The book is well written, I just wish it was more of what it bills itself to be.

Well the pic on Amazon made the pizza box look so real that I contemplated not getting it because it might be to big for the side of my fridge which is where I wanted to put it. It is a flat typical calendar and the box is 3D looking but the pizzas look real enough like you could actually eat a slice. It’s 12”x 12” closed and 12”x 24” open.

These look so realistic with the greasy boxes and imperfect slices. When I opened it I instantly regretted the purchase because I knew I’d be craving pizzas to no end!!! Great buy though. We have it up in our kitchen.

Bought this as a white elephant gift, was surprised at how realistic the pizza looks. Probably won't help if your New Years Resolution is to lose weight. :P
