About the Author
Gail Pellett is originally from Victoria and Vancouver, Canada but has lived in New York for 40 years with a year out in Beijing in 1980. A writer, director, and producer of award-winning TV and radio documentaries, her wide-ranging work has appeared on PBS, NPR, NBC, the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation, and Pacifica Radio. She has published feature articles in the Washington Post Magazine, Mother Jones and the Village Voice, as well as in webzines--Truthout, Common Dreams, Moyers Media and the Pan-Asia Photography Review. "Forbidden Fruit - 1980 Beijing, a Memoir" is Pellett's first book. For years Pellett has reported on the "world out there." "Forbidden Fruit" is her first work turning a lens on herself. She now divides her time between New York City and Oaxaca, Mexico.

I finished Gail Pellet's book in a couple of good sittings. It is a great read. She very successfully evokes the sights, smells and frustrations of China in 1980. So much of what she describes will be familiar to readers who know the territory. She was working as a 'polisher' with Radio Peking but in the end got fed up with the childish propaganda, ridiculous surveillance and endless hypocrisy. Sound familiar? She witnessed the first sprouts of private enterprise - the odd peasant selling snacks, and the first privately owned restaurant, for example. One of her major frustrations was her inability to find and keep a Chinese lover, something that would have been completely verboten just a year or two earlier. I have a couple of gripes: we hear too much about the music she is listening to, she calls all the co-workers 'the comrades' which grates on my ears, and she refers to the Chinese languages as 'Mandarin', a curious anachronism. There are lots of little mistakes in the Chinese language quotes she mentions. In fact, her whole experience would have been very different if she had been advised to learn Chinese (not Mandarin) before she took up the job. In spite of these whinges, you will find it well worthwhile.
With hundreds of very personal encounters, anecdotes and observations, Gail Pellett leads us into the world of expatriates in China in the early 1980s, at a time when the country was still relatively closed, but started to open up to the world and to prepare for the tremendous changes that we can see today.It is the world of the still few international journalists, diplomats and business people and their Chinese counterparts, but even more particularly the realm of “friends†of China, the so-called “foreign experts†who had come to Beijing often with great sympathy for Mao’s revolution, to work for government institutions as translators, advisers, teachers or foreign language radio editors just as Gail Pellett did.Their motive often was to experience a fascinating society at first-hand, to meet its people und understand its ways, searching also for inspirations for their own Western cultures. But the “forbidden fruits†on this path were manifold, and not just the, at that time still banned, erotic or sexual relations between locals and foreigners. For the Chinese they were also all kinds of Western ideas, ways of life and liberties, while foreigners were expected not to get too deep an insight into the functioning and the secrets of politics, information control and the dark sides of recent history.The China of the 21st century has definitely changed, although some deep-rooted principles and policies still seem to be there. Reading Gail Pellett’s book is therefore a must for those who like to understand how it all began more than 40 years ago, when Mao had just passed away and highly disorientated individuals were desperately searching and testing new ways.
I love Gail Pellett’s beautifully written memoir for how she so honestly brings together the emotional, intellectual, and political aspects of her experiences during her time in China at Radio Beijing in 1980. She convincingly shows that the political is personal and vice versa, and that there is no way around that salient feminist insight. This memoir is a pageturner. Its tension kept me spellbound from beginning to end. Anyone who was directly or indirectly involved with the New Left and the women’s liberation movement of the late 60’s/early 70’s or has an interest in that era, anyone who distributed and/or read Peking Press publications or the Black Panther Party newspapers, needs to read FORBIDDEN FRUIT. If you’re still struggling with the question “where was truth?†this is a book you want to read. The timing of its publication could not be better.I particularly love this memoir for the transparency of the author and for what she has taught me about myself: the blind spots on the long winding road of my political consciousness (and wishful thinking), my illusions, disillusions, hope for a better world, and hope for the possibility of authentic friendships and authentic love.FORBIDDEN FRUIT is also a beautifully edited book. I love the carefully picked photographs. The inclusion of references to music was an important decision and makes this memoir even more unique. My only regret is that there is no index.
