I came across Tal's blog while searching for people who had made and pursued extensive bucket lists. What I loved about reading this book was the opportunity to "go along for the ride" all the way from his initial trigger to create his list of 100 life goals, all the way through to his completion of everything on that list 10 years later. The book reads very differently from most personal development books in that you are being exposed to ways of thinking and ways of pursuing goals through a very personal narrative arc. In fact it was the very visceral descriptions of moments in Tal's marriage that were most impactful for me. Actually perhaps the most impressive achievement in the whole book (out of many) is the lush prose of the book itself, as one of the very first goals Tal - a native Israeli - describes pursuing in depth is learning to speak English. While the book is significantly more narrative than instructional, it runs the gamut of meaty personal development topics: dealing with fear of failure and rejection, pushing way past your comfort zone, separating motivation from outcome, the difference between deciding and committing, generosity and contribution, love, self-awareness... it covers a lot of ground. If I were to make one criticism of the book it would be that Tal had so many experiences and insights over his 10 year adventure that sometimes the narrative feels rushed, occasionally making some of his achievements seem more magical than methodical. Other times his vivid descriptions of the struggle and focus required to achieve a goal, such as during training for a triathlon, may prove more informative. Perhaps the most interesting aspect of the book overall from a personal development perspective is the shift Tal undergoes from a highly analytical / intellectual pursuit of goals toward an embracing of intuition and uncertainty. If you are looking for a book to inspire you to live your life fully I highly recommend giving this one a read.
I’ve read so many books and blogs about setting and achieving goals in order to have the good life. But most people write about these ideas in the abstract- I always end up wondering how the process actually works for the author and why it doesn’t ever work for me. I was endlessly frustrated- I wanted to see the actual process, step-by-step, so I could understand it.Tal Gur’s The Art of Fully Living was exactly what I was looking for. Not only does he break down the goal-setting process into mini-steps, but it’s so much more interesting than that- he tells his amazing and inspiring stories that help the reader visualize how he put each step in action. Tal has had one incredible life! Here are some of his biggest and most exciting accomplishments:- Immersing himself in Australian culture to master English (and have a lot of fun!)- Completing an Ironman (in only 5 months of training)- Leaving a secure but soul-crushing office job for traveling the world and becoming location independent- Climbing out of almost $34,000 in credit card debt to being financially independent through online entrepreneurship- Learning salsa, Muay Thai, and surfing- Having a spiritual and creative rebirthMy favorite parts of the book were all the compelling stories- I couldn’t put it down! I felt like I was there with Tal in Sri Lanka surfing at dawn or drumming at the Midburn festival. Now I’m inspired to set goals, but my new goals probably going to be bigger goals than I could have imagined before. I’m ready for serious adventure!Aside from the stories, the bigger messages will be with me forever- that we can have the life of our dreams despite the fear we feel. We don’t even need to overcome our fear- we can just acknowledge it, feel it fully, but also keep moving and living fully. Tal’s success seems to come from following his intuition, and he’s able keep following that intuition by continuously feeling and then releasing his fear. This book made me reflect on the own fear I have in my life and how it has limited me. After reading this book, I’ve recommitted to a scary career move that I’ve been putting off for a while. I’m so grateful to have this book as my guide for designing my very full life. Thank you, Tal! My only complaint is that I want to know when he’s writing his next book!
Tal has done some remarkable things, but that makes him sound unreal, as if he isn't a person, but is instead someone unlike you. His life traveling the word and going after 100 life goals is inspiring, but what I think is the most inspiring about Tal is that he is an ordinary person. He felt trapped in a life that wasn't giving him all he wanted... not even most of what he wanted, so he decided to do something about it. This is perhaps where many of us stop, but Tal kept going forward, seeking to understand himself better along with his place in the world. This led him to a location independent travel lifestyle, but more than this, it led him to himself and a grounded sense of his life's purpose. The book chronicles his journey, both geographically and his yearly focus goal. He believes that you need to immerse yourself fully in one goal and really stick with it. People tend to change what they are doing quickly and so miss out on many of their goals. Pick a thing and stay with it. Deal with your fears. He actively goes for rejection and teaches himself how to deal with it much better than most of us do. Set boundaries on your time, so you can give, but not burn out. These are just a few of the ideas Tal covers in this book, all in a very easily readable, personable style.Tal begins this journey with a group of friends setting goals, which maybe many of us have done without the follow through. Tal shows you one way of grabbing hold of life and living it fully. He also shows us how we can do the same. Buckle in and get started!
