This book is okay. I live in the Midwest, and this book seems geared towards folks growing grapes in more temperate climates. (I sort of anticipated this would be the case when I bought it, though.) I primarily purchased this book expecting to see comprehensive information on training methods. Surprisingly, I found more information on grape training methods from a different book on pruning and training plants, generally (which is sort of a shock, given that grapes comprise maybe eight or nine, not all, of the pages of that other book). Regardless, this book nevertheless is useful for other purposes, such as providing tips and guidance on placement of plants, creating support systems/trellises, watering methods, dealing with weeds organically, soil preparation, etc.The name of this book is a little deceptive. Many of the images and directions in this book depict growing grapes in a much larger area than I presume many people have available in their "backyard" (at least those who live in a city -- not sure if folks who live in more rural areas call the expansive stretches of land around them a "backyard," but I'm open to being wrong on that). Not that these methods aren't scaleable, though, to a smaller area. Just FYI.

I am interested in developing my 10 acre pasture into a real vineyard. First, I intend to put in a test plot and see what if I have what it takes. This book is exactly the right tool to get started and avoid ripping it all out later. In particular, the layout of vineyard spacing and dimensions is very good and gives lots of options. I can take the most conservative approach for the test plot and optimize in future plantings. I also liked the year by year maintenance program. If you follow this book, I have no doubt your vineyard will look exactly like a professional did it all, which is what I want. This was an outstanding purchase and a shame I can't give it move stars.

The section on popular grape varieties and their hardiness is worth this books weight in gold. The section on pruning, detailed. I am unsure as to the purpose of pruning to two cordons diagram, in the first year of pruning.

Really good info. Covers all the areas of grape growing and then some. I recommend this book. The only drawback is it is not up to date enough to cover the latest varieties of wine grapes like Marquette, La Crescent, etc. Hopefully the writers will publish a new edition. Great book!

Simply written, and well organized for the person who wants to grow a small vineyard, Right down to making wines.pretty much an A to Z book.

This book isn't by Frank Ronan, as advertised, it's by Christopher Lloyd. This makes it a fantastic read, like walking round the garden every month of the year,with the master gardener himself. Great bedtime reading in the winter. But, I bought it without seeing a picture, with Frank Ronan advertised as the autor, when in fact he's only written the forward, so I'm very disappointed about that, as I already had the book.

About the Author

Aranya has been experimenting with what permaculture can do since his design course epiphany in 1996. In the years that followed he designed a collection of gardens, along with a few other non-land based designs, writing them all up to gain his Diploma in Applied Permaculture Design 2003. Since that time he's followed a teaching pathway, that now involves delivering on average ten two-week design courses a year. Along the way he's met many amazing people that give him hope for the future and who in no small way have influenced the content of this guide. This is definitely NOT what I thought it would be. The only diagram/layout is the one on the cover. This book is about a lot of esoteric babble that goes off into tangents about balancing your life, and blah blah blah. I just wanted something that showed me where to put which plants to achieve a certain effect. (IE: here's a "step-by-step guide" to making a shade garden.....) yeahhhhh, THIS is not the right book for me. I will be donating it to the local library. :(

Permaculture Design by Aranya fulfills the purpose that the author intended for the book: to be a straightforward guide that you can pick up and read just the section you need or all of it. Each chapter is well-written and uses plain language anyone can grasp. The parts, chapters, sections organization of the book makes it easy to find what you're looking for, and I appreciated the many online resources provided as well.The book is a bit of a slow read if have already read Permaculture: A Designer's Manual by Bill Mollison, and that would indicate Aranya took sufficient time to explain the basics to someone with no prior knowledge of permaculture. There is redundancy in the book, but again, this book is meant for anyone to be able to read in any order, so yeah, I think the author's objective for the book was accomplished.I did learn some new things from this book, too, so I find my time and money was well-spent on this book.

This is an excellent guide for the beginner - permaculture design can be daunting, but this talks you through each step, in a clear and humorous way, with lots of examples.

I bought several copies and plan to share them with other...you will too.It is top quality heavy gloss paper (FCS sustainable certified) with color photos.Aranya provided an index to other references and even a website of his own that provides larger pictures in the book, along with much more.One of the best Permaculture books I have (along with Peter Bane's new book, "Garden Farming for Town and Country". I have just finished a six week introductory course in permaculture. This text is an excellent follow up to that experience. Aranya has distilled much of what I was exposed to making for a efficient reference tool. This text has served as an excellent resource as I start implementing the concepts I learned in the course.I highly recommend it for those starting out as I did. My sense is that it would useful to experienced practitioners as well.

This book is a great resource, chock full of practical info and skills you can share with clients. TIP: I take all books like this that are meant to be photocopied to Kinkos (or whatever big copy shop is by you) and have them cut the spine off and 3 hole punch it. It costs like, $2. Then you can easily send it through the copy feeder instead of having to stand and flip pages and try to flatten them so you don't get that gray part on the copy.

This is a must have for every clinician dealing with PTSD and Trauma. It is a very comprehensive quick read that covers everything from the DSM-IV criteria to the unique grounding exercises including tapping. This is a great book, a must have.

A helpful resource, that includes a lot of practical info and skills you can adapt and use with clients. It brings you back to the basics for sure.

This book is a wonderful beginner's tool for trauma so far. I have enjoyed reading about the various suggested techniques, and I have received feedback from my clients that they enjoy the psychoeducational part of the reading as well. Would recommend this book to other budding clinicians!

This book is out-dated and has old DSM criteria. It has some practical worksheets but not an updates trauma workbook.

There wasn't much in here that I didn't already know as a trauma therapist. The exercises were a little too basic and wordy, particularly to use with children and teens.

I love this book and will use it often. Breaks down some of the basic skills in self-regulation clearly. Can be used as a self-help book or by a clinician working with clients.

A must-have in every counselor's office.
