The title probably should be in singular "Electric Boat," because that's really what the book is about. It's about building an electric propelled wood canoe from scratch, propelled by a modified trolling motor. There is a lot of valuable information in this book, but I'd have liked something more extensive, with setups for larger boats.

I bought this book on the basis of a favorable review from small boat designer Jim Michalak. He indicated (in an old article) it was the most thorough book on the subject available, and I'm afraid this may still be true today. For anyone contemplating a small electric craft, at the prices this book is going for used, it is a useful guide from someone with experience.The most surprising element of the book was the amount of information regarding solar charging. At the time this book was written, solar lacked viability for electric craft. I imagine readers of the day might have found the info to be futuristic and impractical. By today's standards it is lacking, but that is to be expected with the massive changes that have taken place with solar in the intervening years.The most disappointing aspect of the book is that the author did not offer plans nor insight into a beautiful electric boat that he designed. The boat won a contest and was the reason he was given the deal to write this book. There is a picture of the boat and a scant bit of info on it.For anyone wanting to build entirely from scratch, I would recommend skipping the design in the book. It is a Pirogue, basically a canoe made of three cut and curved sheets of plywood. While there is nothing innately wrong with a Pirogue, there are tons of better plans on the market for such boats (many of them free), and most of them use easier and faster building techniques than the author's design. In fact, his design is the only Pirogue I've ever seen that required a strongback to construct. His ideas can be implemented on pretty much any canoe-like craft. Just remember to check the law on electric boats in your area. I don't know of anywhere in the U.S. that doesn't require a vessel to be titled and registered once you put an electric motor on it.

Good book

This is a great introduction to the technical and aesthetic aspects of choosing / outfitting / building a quiet, clean boat. I've used the information to put together two electric boats, and have been delighted with the head start on information in one place on battery capacity, battery care, motors, power consumption, propeller and hull performance, etc... As an experienced electrical engineer, I have found some technical weakesses and typos, but overall, this is a great pioneering book that I hope has some worthy successors.

After several years since its publication, Douglas Little's Handbook is still the best book of its kind. It is a great guide for anyone who wants to learn about electric boating and how to build one for very little money. Electric boats hve been around for 150 years. They are reliable, good for the environment, fun and cheap. They don't spook the animals and birds as they pass. The book follows about a dozen key Mafiya men in the USA (and back and forth to Russia and Ukraine) from the late 1970s through the late 1990s. It is colorfully told, and its main characters are colorful to begin with. The FBI was just awakening to the threat of the Russian gangsters. The later book opens out into the world of offshoring and monmey laundering. It has neat, compact descriptions of banks, players and moves. I would like to see an update, as September 2001 and the pivot of the FBI toward terrorism may have reopened some opportunities for these folks. And I will be interested to see how our Justice Department and FBI are directed in this regard, in the Trump era.And who shows up here? If you guessed Donald Trump, you win. Might fake news travel back in time? What was Trump doing in this story? He was having a very nasty guy (a guy who sent a very threatening and vulgar note to the author, reproduced in this book) living at Trump Tower, and Mr. Trump was also making money from (the author claims) some very nasty casino patrons. Now, unlike a bank, a residential complex and a casino lack certain "know your customer" laws to frustrate money laundering. (Some big well-connected banks have shown themselves selective in complying with those laws, anyway.) Of course, money laundering, we all know, never happens in foreigners' New York area real estate purchases, or casinos. All this means Trump's behavior (to the extent it is recited here, around page 132) may very well, on its face, be legal. But ethical? That, I suppose, is in the eye of the beholder. Let's say I would never take any of this money I see as blood-drenched (aside from passively receiving the benefits of capital flight into this system from sources we would rather not look at). But I'm just a common fool and a nobody, not a big player like the Trumpster. Surely Mr. Trump has displayed some interesting selectivity about which immigrants he seems to think are problematic or not.Again, the trump name pops up at page 250, footnote, wherein "a top Russian crime figure in America, who once fought in North Vietnam for the Soviets," jumped bail on criminal charges and fled to Poland. "Before he fled ..., he turned over his mortgages for five pricey Trump Tower apartments to a Genovese [American mafia family] associate. The mortgages were liquidated and the funds were moved through a mafia-controlled bank in Manhattan's Chelsea." Well, certain people congregate around certain people. People are known by the company they keep, in business and not merely as personally. While certainly plenty of law-abiding people have or trade Trump Tower apartments, these do seem a status thing and almost a form of currency, a store of value, among a certain very sleazy global set. And this is our second White House?

Holy smokes, this book is hair raising. I feel very naive for having not known this was going on in the world, and in our country. And now I feel quite alarmed. With the current political climate, this book is quite timely, and every American would be better informed, if they read Red Mafiya. Note: after reading, you may want to sleep with the lights on.

Fabulous read: ranks with literature like, "Don't Shoot the Messenger." However, you really need to have a high IQ to be able to stay engaged with the data and information presented: everything comes together at the end of each chapter, but really comes together on the very last page of the book!!!

Very prophetic work by Friedman. Trump is the culmination of the efforts of Putin. Oligarchs, and Russian Mafia-not sure there is a distinction. It would have been great to see what Friedman thought of today, since he saw it years ago and I'm sure feared it.

I wish there were an update to this book-- but sadly, Robert I Friedman has died. A very good start to appreciating the impact of Russian organized crime in the US.

The first thing I did after opening this book was to go online and see if Robert I. Friedman was still alive because I found it hard to believe he could write a book like this and not get whacked. I was relieved to discover that, while he is deceased, death came from a blood disease as opposed to the hands of Mr. Ivankov or any of the other criminals he exposes in these pages. Simultaneous to reading this work I have open a recently released book on the Mexican Mafia which greatly pales in comparison to the artfulness of this account. I had no problem with Mr. Friedman's organization. The chapters, for the most part, tell differing tales of different characters which together provide a stunning and horrifying description of the Russian mob in America. The personalities depicted are every bit as interesting as those in la costa nostra. Indeed, that Italian gangsters played bocce ball while the Russian ones played chess goes a long way in explaining why they have been as successful as they are. The best writing rolls forth like a movie and that's true in the case of Red Mafiya. This was a magnificent book.

This book shines a light on the history and nature of the Russian Mafiya. In the perspective of today, and the Trump presidency one can see that we are well and truly screwed.

Although it was written in the year 2000 it clearly shows the genesis of current daily news headlines. I have to say it gets a bit convoluted, but the Sheer scope of the corruption makes you look over your shoulder wondering if nothing is not under the influence of this organization.

It is a classical story of four animals that travel to the town of Bremen with the hope of becoming a musician. I remember my mom reading me this story when I was 5 or 6. Somehow I saw it in amazon the other day and decided to buy for my two children (3.5 years old and 1.5 years old). The story is as enjoyable as ever and the book is designed in such a child friendly way.Younger children like mine, can enjoy both being read and shuffling the pages themselves. It is light weight and has wide pages almost fully covered with pictures. The script is kept at minimum and the pictures are well made so that even my younger one can distinguish the animals and the items in it.For the price ($3.26) it offers a good fun for your kid.

Classic book. I've been looking for this version of the Bremen-town Musicians as this is the one I remember as a kid. Other versions of the story by other author/illustrator combos do not compare to this version. Jack Kemp's pictures are endearing and make you laugh out loud. Glad to see his books making a slow comeback.

I loved this story as a child, and was so glad to see the book with the same illustrations that my book had so many years ago. Item in great condition. Recommend seller.

One of my favorite if not my absolute favorite book from my childhood. I am so thrilled they make it in a paperback. Took it to my daughter's class and not one child had heard the story. They loved it!

This was the book I used for years and misplaced it last year. I purchased other books but it just wasn't the same. I was in Bremen over the summer and there were statues everywhere! When I returned from Germany I found this version of the story and was glad to use it again.

Always like this animal story, regardless of which version it is. Our granddaughters were not familiar with it, so purchased this one for them.

Psychoanalysis has always understood its principal theoretical terrain to be that of sex. In recent decades sex is a land that has receded from view below the tidal shift to gender theory; feminists and gender theorists heralded gender as socially and linguistically constructed and demoted sex as a category to the side of so-called biological fact or essentialism, leading to today's well-known dictum that sex is biological, gender is cultural. In short, gender theory participated in and eventually became the epicenter of a wider revanchism of Manichaen thinking in the theoretical humanities, one that sets the principle of construction against the principle of essence, of culture versus biology.One can now ask, as Zupancic does here, whether psychoanalysis-- and Freud and Lacan specifically-- set sex on the side of biology, as gender theorists claim, or whether they asked how sex and sexual pleasure disrupt both the acculturation and the biology of the organism. Why, Freud asks, do pleasure and enjoyment seemingly guide us to such errant destinations? Indeed, when one looks closely, there appears hardly anything "natural" about sex! The very problem of sexed reproduction-- and it IS a problem standing in need of explanation, since other forms of reproduction are ready-to-hand in this world-- is a problem of extreme evolutionary inefficiency and complexity (a species would have much better chances of survival if it didn't force its members to meet and perform a set of acts together in a given timeframe). Freud named this organic inefficiency, complexity, and inertia that is inherent to sex and pleasure: death drive, a ceaseless pressure to "return to the inorganic."Zupancic's book usefully unfolds a number of themes and debates around the fate of this "frontier-concept" of Freud's, and one could profitably read "What IS Sex?" alongside and against efforts by other contemporary theorists such as Catherine Malabou and Paolo Virno who seek not to oppose history and nature (as Barthes once had) but to interdigitate the two in an extremely precise (i.e., negative, apophatic) way: to endow the body with a mythological organ. Witness, for example, Zupancic's provocative defense of the phallus as a Lacanian concept, when otherwise both feminists and queer theorists have beaten a retreat from such allegedly biologizing language.This is, in short, a must-read book. But for whom? The title suggests a far wider audience than probably exists. The Short Circuits series in general suffers from inadequate editing, with issues that range from numbering errors and pronoun confusion to more mind-boggling printing mistakes in particular Lacanian formulae; "What IS Sex?" bears some of that, but the real impediment is the sense I had while reading of being thrown into a semi-private language. Zupancic gives very little, almost nothing, in the way of introductory set-up or framing to the issues of her address, largely leaving readers to puzzle out why she has chosen the particular paths and questions she has. Readers already keyed into this dialogue and vernacular will find much that is richly synthesized and developed in these brief pages, including a much needed revisitation and extension of the encounter between Deleuze and Lacan (via Badiou) that seems in comparison merely sketched in Zupancic's earlier (and excellent) "The Odd One In." This makes it a helpful shorthand and decisive contribution for those already up to speed, but others may find themselves at a loss as to how the work came together and what motivated its presentation. This is a very different reading experience from that of Zizek, where one sometimes gets the feeling of too much framing, and so it is both for better and worse that Zizek's companion volume, "Incontinence of the Void," provides a good bit of scaffolding and context to Zupancic's work (this back-and-forth is a stylistic accomplishment in its own right, but this review is for this book). I recommend working through both to get a fuller sense of the compass and radicality of psychoanalysis and its theory of sex and nonrelation, especially as it is understood by those in the orbit of the "Slovenian School."

Better than Butler! Zupancic recontextualizes the argument around sex and gender in a Hegelian/Lacanian perspective via a traidick structure (master signifier of gender/symbolic gender/gender in the real). The hard thrust of her arguments starts where Buttlers end, butt through it’s intercourse, recontextualizes the issues at play in a manner that has aroused new territory in this field, yielding brilliant new insight into a hot and hard topic. Zupacic cums to the conclusion ultimately that sex is the outgrowth of the ever present lack out of the signifying/symbolic elements that are preasant in our ontology. A proverbial hole that needs to perpetually be filled.She also has a wonderful section on the Freudian slip!
