Bought upon a gourmet friend's recommendation, and while I had a hard time seeing the point in getting a bulky hardcover cookbook (as I use various online recipe services, Allrecipes et al) , but after cooking some of the special recipes that I've never seen elsewhere (like Mousakka à la Grecque) , I couldn't be happier.They managed to fit 2-3 recipes on every page with clear, easy to follow instructions, and none of them are 'fillers'. It is worth it for the salad section (one of the most modest ones, btw) alone.Also, even though not marketed as such, it is vegetarian and vegan-friendly , with a decent amount of such recipes scattered in between.

This was the first cookbook that I owned and was given to me as a gift from my husband. He took it with him when we divorced many years later and I have missed it. I found this and purchased immediately to make some of the things I used to make. Very happy with the purchase and the quality of a book published in 1964. Shipping was quick!

Only get the 1961 original. Later models leave out recipes.

I have all the NYT cookbooks and this is still the best despite the high doses of butter and cream.

There are easier recipes out there, but if you are serious about learning to really cook, this should be your encyclopedia. I started using this book when I was 10, and while I cook at a more an advanced level now, it's good to go back to basics.

This cookbook is from the days when the New York Times was the king of newspapers and people enjoyed food without any moral qualms. The recipe for Hamburger Potato Roll alone is worth the price, if you're cooking for people under thirty. There are so many Fifties era classics in this cook book that will absolutely delight the chef looking for something new, fun, and different. Rumaki, Oysters Rockefeller, Scallops Seviche, Eggs a la Russe, (and they have what I have found to be the only way to hard boil an egg without cracking it.)Spinach Feta Strudel and that's just a few of the appetizers. Over the years, I have made many, many of the recipes from this cookbook, and while some are not as complicated and subtle as the more recent versions, they never fail to please and most have ingredients that are easily available and inexpensive.I love this cookbook and every time I use it, I have fun making, eating and serving what I produce from these recipes. You can't go wrong giving this as a gift to any cook, beginner or advanced. The directions are clear and easy to follow. And it has recipes from curry to chili, to borscht, to spoon bread, and Ambrosia cake. It's fun just to read this book and imagine the parties you will give.

I bought this book used, in good condition and it is fun to read. I found many recipes that reminded me of my grand mother's cooking and her ways of doing it (i.e. the one and only apple strudel). When she was young food was still food and not a profitable industry delivering chemical blends.If you want to own one single cook book, this is no longer it because it is a little dated (compare it to a vintage dress and the one you get at H&M). Cooking at home nowadays is more time efficient. However, if you already collected a few cook books on your shelf and you are interested in cooking, whole food and love to experiment (like me), it is an item to treasure and have fun with.

My mom adores this cookbook, and I have some fond memories of eating things that have come out of it. I am particularly partial to the Lebanese meatballs, and adapted the recipe only slightly to make gyros with it. They came out perfect. The book itself is well-written, the printing is good quality, and the recipes I've made are simply excellent. It is fairly easy to get used copies, and it is totally worth the nominal price you'd pay for it.

Tough to review. There's no doubt this is a fantastic book. Beautifully written, palpable characters, fantastic backdrop. I can see why it's recieved so many accolades.But all that said, I didn't find it enjoyable to read.It took a while to figure out why. Even while reading it I'm thinking to myself "This is so good", but at the same time wondering why I'm bored and looking forward to the next book.Finally I think I nailed it. Nothing really happens. It's all set in amongst the background of a lot happening, but other than hearing about it, there's not much that really goes on with the characters that so much time has been spent making us love.This feels like all the parts of a fantastic book that happen BETWEEN the major plot points.I spent the majority of this book waiting for something to happen, and when it doesn't it feels like there no payoff for the time invested in these characters.Maybe this is what literary fiction is about. I can see why people may like it. It's life through the eyes of others.But books are a form of entertainment. This wasn't entertaining to me, and I couldn't wait to start a new book.

I cannot recommend this book highly enough! It has quickly become one of my absolute favorite books...it's truly captivating and well written.Call me old-fashioned, but I used to love browsing bookstores in person, and the rise of the internet has made it all too easy to find and purchase subpar (albeit popular) books. There are so many entertainment alternatives that many truly great stories go under the radar...until it's announced that they'll be made into a movie (in fact, many read like screenplays, as if the author anticipates that's where the paycheck is). And yes, the characters and the interwoven storyline and the dramatic WWII backdrop could make for a blockbuster hit.But. This is a book you really should read, and relish. (I read this on my kindle and hid the progress percentage because I didn't want it to end.) Doerr writes with absolutely beautiful imagery. It's emotional and vivid and earnest. A wonderful reminder that books were written to provide a unique insight into how others think, and feel, and live, and love.

The writer is obviously a very talented storyteller who devoted a considerable period of time to writing this novel (10 years). It is quite vivid in detail. Those who like literary fiction will enjoy it immensely. Those who like a story that is plot-driven, not so much. I kept reading, because I wanted to see it to the end, but at any time, I could have put this book down. I kept checking to see how many pages I had left to wade through. Not a good sign. I never really connected to the characters, particularly Werner, who played his one string of homesickness for all it was worth. I think the story would have worked much better if it had been arranged in chronological order. All the flashbacks at the beginning were distracting. Frankly--irritating--particularly when they occurred during a "present" scene, when the reader was quite unwilling dragged away from the action for a lengthy flashback. The flashbacks were also confusing (time-wise), since the book was written entirely in present tense. Dates were posted before the chapters, but they were hard to keep in mind when everything was happening right now. One last word on detail before closing. This book is RICH in detail. The problem, for me--and you may come away with an entirely different take on this--reviews are only opinions, after all--was finding a detail that would stick with me. The story was just too busy--noisy--for me to pick up something that resonated personally. If you boil away all the detail, what are you left with here? A somewhat improbable, and disappointedly brief, intersection in the lives of two persons that apparently had no lasting effect on either. I need more from a story than that to enjoy it. But other readers will come away with an entirely different experience.

It has been a while since I have found a book that I wanted to read slowly so that I could soak in every detail in hopes that the last page seems to never come.When reading the synopsis of this novel, I never imagined that I would feel so connected to a book where one of the main characters is blind and the other a brilliant young German orphan who was chosen to attend a brutal military academy under Hitler's power using his innate engineering skills.This novel was so much more than the above states. The idiosyncrasies of each individual character are so well defined and expressed in such ways that come across the page almost lyrically. I was invited into the pages and could not only imagine the atmosphere, but all of my senses were collectively enticed from the very first page until the last.I was so amazed with the way that the author was able to heighten all my senses in a way that I felt like I knew what it was like to be blind. In most well-written books you get of a sense of what the characters look like and follow them throughout the book almost as if you are on a voyage, but with this novel, I could imagine what it was like to be in Marie-Laure's shoes. The descriptives were so beautifully intricate that I could imagine the atmosphere through touch and sound. It was amazing, really.There were so many different aspects of the book that are lived out in separate moments and in different countries that find a way to unite in the end. What impressed me most was that I could have never predicted the outcome. It was as though all cliches were off the table and real life was set in motion. Life outside of books can be very messy and the author stayed true to life but in a magical and symbolic way.I have said in other reviews that just when I think that I have read my last book centered around the Second World War, another seems to pop up. I should emphasize that this book created an image of war in a way that I have never imagined before. I truly got a sense of what it must have been like for children who lived a happy life and then suddenly were on curfew and barely had food to eat. It also showed the side of young children who are basically brainwashed by Nazi leaders and made into animals who seem to make choices that they normally wouldn't in order to survive. And by survive, I mean dodging severe abuse by their own colleagues.This book may haunt me for some time. I can't express enough how beautifully written the pages are. I highly recommend this read as it is my favorite so far for 2014.

There’s a bigger force at play in this story, but it’s not completely developed yet, so there are gaps in the information needed to truly comprehend the whys and hows of all that takes place.I’ll admit that I didn’t really understand why the plot took a twist that it did. There was so much to deal with just between the two main characters so adding further problems to an already complicated dynamic felt unnecessary. I get that it does shed a bit of light on Pet’s Master’s past, but for the most part, it distracted me from the main story line.Besides the deviation from the plot that I struggled with, I’m intrigued to see where Carmen Jenner takes these two characters, especially where she leaves them at the end of book 1. I’m not sure if the gods or monsters will win in the end, or if that battle isn’t the one I should be addressing because there just might be a potential victor that no one saw coming because they never bothered to look too closely.4 Poison Apples

--Oh Carmen girl… what You did to me ???  Once again You assured me how amazing writter You are.Me – Marta, woman who is a little prude, can be honest now…  I was affraid how I manage this dark romance.  I like this kind of stories , but sometimes they could be a little overwhelming  for me. However… it was  impossible  with new Carmen’s book.Of course In the Land of Monsters and Gods  are very good and very strong.  Be prepared to one big rollecoster ride. It ‘s like love story from the most darkest side, which could make feel also high. High of emotions, high of really vivid, raw pictures.  Carmen done good job wit secenes, she  write them in every possible  imaginable way… almost like in movie.  Please..  forgive me but I’m still feeling blush on my face… This woman knows how to write about sexy times…. Carmen also know how to leve her readers breathless… without any knowledge what will happen od the next page of her story.I realy enjoy this book, even if  sometimes I was so mad at main male character there… I wanted to feel more love, not only from this  physical, gritty side. Because of that I was just happy when my Swan Queen didn’t give up easily… She wasn’t born submissive,  she knows how to fight.Thanks to every word I’ve read, I remebered me… this book is from Carmen, so it must be written in this kind of way.

Unique, that is the word that comes to mind to describe this book. Anderson Cooper and his mom Gloria Vanderbilt decide to do some straight talk by email. This grew into a project lasting a year and was revealing in every way. Mom talks and then Anderson talks--trading off with their deepest feelings. You know who is talking because the font would change. Sometimes I was so engrossed that I failed to realize the font had changed. I would have to back up and figure who was speaking. I was not particularly interested in Gloria Vanderbilt. But I was very interested in what Anderson had to say. He is in our home daily. There is a great deal of insight to his feelings. I am happy to say he is who I thought he was.He is serious, thoughtful, kind and ambitious. He is real.

WOW. What a great book and is worth a read. It’s sincere and everything that you would hope it would be. There are two aspects to this book, one is a candid conversation between a mother and a son, and the other is…well, a lot of the family gossip. It mirrors the conversations that many people hope that they have once in their lifetime with their own eldest family member, when they themselves are adults.It is a conversation, but done in the style of Anderson Cooper, almost being his own investigative journalist regarding his own family. However, unlike situations in which Cooper simply asks questions and keeps moving, he discusses his own responses, his own feelings, and explores elements from his own background and experiences. A great example is Cooper mentioning how he was afraid to tell his mom he was gay because of being afraid of how she would react because of the rumors that her own mother was gay. Instead the mother essentially responds with, “Yeah, I knew, all your friends were gay,” and does the motherly thing of refocusing on the question of her son regarding her own mother and discusses her mother’s sexuality and her own views on sexuality, which have changed over the years and views that it is fluid.There is also some really unique insights into the different family members, providing a history of each one as Anderson asks, going so far as to describe houses and ways that money was made. There is also a slight element of mother’s give a damn being broken at 91 and even letting her son know about sex and the firs time she no longer had to fake an orgasm, which was one of the attractive aspects of who she dated. This is also couched in the context on reflections of her own insecurities being a young girl and growing up, as well as why she stayed in some horrible marriages.The writing style of this book is easy and fluid. There are interjections in-between conversations that give a quick and easy reference to the backstory of a particular family member or some occasions of the family in general. There are also points where Cooper mentions that he watches a YouTube video that has a family member, or his mother, and it’s actually quite easy to look up that information and follow along. The responses of Cooper are often shorter, but pull in normal colloquialisms, something that shows a bit of a generational divide the two, such as YouTube; whereas his mother may respond with a quote, or just simply go off of the comment mentioned.Vanderbilt’s responses are much more elaborate, detailed, and a bit of a train of thought around an initial point Cooper asks and that his mother makes a winding way in telling a story, but this is for the best because it is in this portion you can see a lot of recollections about her life, where she has been, and her understanding in hindsight. There is a lot of brutal honesty as well, such as her own insecurities early in life, acknowledgement she probably was not the best parent, recognition that she and Cooper probably would have been closer if he was a daughter, the death of her husband (Cooper's father), and later the death of Coopers brother, Carter (her son).A great book all around, it gives insight into the family’s meeting of one another, Coopers’ own father, and clarifications on his own understanding of family gossip from years of growing up. There is a lot that may mirror experiences that some adults have been fortunate enough to have snippets of with a family member, but is the extended version of insight into a family that probably has a lot more gossip and rumors surrounding it than one’s own and a few more trips to Europe on whims than most people experience in a lifetime.

I love this book. I live in the Palm Springs desert and have always looked up to Anderson. My Mother and I had a very good relationship, but cancer took her away at 79. I just loved the exchanges between Anderson and Gloria. It was touching on so many levels. I am also a gay man and my Mother was very supportive me of as well. I was a teacher for 39 years. No matter how close we are to our parents (as I was to my father who passed away last year at 98) there are still things not said and subjects not fully probed. For example my father had an older brother who like Rosemary Kennedy was born retarded due to a birth accident and also like her was lobotomized and placed in a facility. Although I was nine when he died I never met him and my father and I never really talked about it (though it was always on his mind).After almost losing his very famous (and very illustrious) mother Gloria Vanderbilt just before her 91st birthday, news anchor Anderson Cooper embarks on his toughest interview via a year-long email exchange. They discuss everything (sometimes to the point of exhaustion): her very tough childhood (including the famous custody trial); her four marriages (Anderson was her last child by her last husband); his father’s sudden and tragic death when Anderson was 10 and how he and his mother began the process of forming a long-overdue mother-son relationship; Anderson’s sexuality (a subject totally missing from his original memoir); and most tragically his older brother’s suicide.I recommend this book with reservations. While touted as an unscripted email exchange it does not read that way. Gloria tends to explain events with so much background (many of which were already covered in her many autobiographies) that one wonders why Anderson Cooper, an award-winning newsman, did not already know about them. Plus there is so much repetitive detail that you really need a prior interest in both Gloria and Anderson to get through it. But many will find its unique approach both interesting and perhaps cathartic. Personally I wished I had this same exchange with my father.

This is not for the casual or lay reader, and not the place to start -- it seems geared entirely to a scholarly archeological audience. Since I am at best a greenhorn in the area of palaeontology (not so much relative to art or to science generally, however) I found this a demanding but worthwhile and often fascinating read. I'm not used to looking up so many words -- and there's no glossary nor very many explanations of technical terms -- so if you don't know your Mousterian from Gravettian, or can't always recall the exact sequence of 'industries' -- tough!It is at times brilliantly written and keenly insightful and even inspiring. Now and then the authors get a bit catty in terms of professional debates or rivalries, while at other times offering a detailed and sober analysis of the same issues or players. The last chapters seem rushed and are more a catalogue than a discussion, which is a bit of a letdown after working so hard to get there, and the kindle edition, at least, seems inadequately illustrated -- this topic deserves so much more visual exploration.

You don't need to be an archaeologist or art historian to enjoy this book, but you do need to be familiar with the subject of Ice Age art. The writing is not technical and obscure, if you're familiar with the subject it's easy to follow. People who are interested in the field are familiar with Lascaux and the other caves as well as portable art, but this book takes a step back to the first appearances of what we would call art in several parts of the world, a subject you don't hear discussed generally. If you're interested in Ice Age art this book is going to open your eyes to a lot of new information. I'm enjoying it very much.

This is not the first book I've read on this topic, but it's one of the most informative; I learned a lot. It's well written and thoroughly illustrated. It's also been well adapted to ebook format.

Wonderful book. Amazing to think primative man could be such sophisticated artists.
