Laurie Halse Anderson has received both the Margaret Edwards Award and the ALAN Award for her contributions to young adult literature. As my first read by author Laurie Anderson, I have to say TWISTED was a great place to start. This raw and fiercely honest account of a young man's struggle to survive his not so atypical suburban life; is captivating and gut-wrenching as well as hysterically funny. I'm sad to say that the strife's Tyler endures are probably more common in many American households these days than we'd like to think. I commend Anderson on her ability to convey the story of a teen male with such candor and insight that it felt that the book was written by a man... A true credit to just what a talented story teller she is.Through Tyler's eyes we watch how his world is affected by one mistake. How that mistake changes the way people around him see and treat him... some for the worse and others for the better. But also how, that mistake also changes Tyler's view of himself.There are many heavy topics in this book with very real and serious situations, but it's not an all dark and deep read. Anderson does a fantastic job balancing the weighty and contemplative with the light and comical moments that are the reality of teen life. I laughed out loud just as much as my heart broke while reliving this young man's senior year.Twisted is a beautifully crafted read that is impossible to put down. A brutally honest look at a broken family and a teen that is basically a good guy struggling to make the right choices and be a better man... Even when no one else believes he can be... Even when doing the right thing still lands him in life changing hot water. I absolutely love the quote on the back of the book and think it does an excellent job summing things up... "Everybody told him to be a man. Nobody told him how."

It seems like every male character I read about in YA fiction is big, burly and tough. He never second guesses himself, he isn't depressed and heaven forbid he cry or show emotion. In "Twisted," Anderson creates a male character that is multi-dimensional. He has insecurities, problems and feelings that can sometimes overwhelm him. After being arrested for vandalizing a school, Tyler enters into his senior year where suddenly a beautiful girl in interested in him. That girl may be more trouble than she seems, and Tyler finds himself in icy water again, as his life seems to spiral out of control.I gave this book four stars, instead of five, because I felt some parts of the book were not developed well enough. Some of the relationships seemed to hesitate on the surface and I would have liked to feel a stronger emotional connection to the other people in the story. There were plenty of opportunities to develop the characters of the father, mother, sister, or love interest, but they fell short. Instead the story focused on Tyler completely, not reaching the potential that it could have.Still, I would recommend this book, especially to teenage boys. It is important that they understand they don't have to be tough all the time. That boys, as well as girls, can experience sadness, hardship and finally, hope.

I just finished Twisted by Laurie Halse Anderson. It's insanely good. It's a YA book about a teenage boy, tyler, who is in trouble. Just like most teens, he's trying to fit in. It starts off with him on probation for spray painting graffiti on the school. He figured he'd be considered a hero for this. So now he's doing community service by taring the school roof and digging holes for a landscaping business in between visits to his parole officer.He's got the hots for a girl out of his league. She just happens to be the daughter of Tyler's father's boss and her brother has been bullying Tyler all through school. But due to all the strenuous labor Tyler has been forced to do, he's bulked up.The girl becomes interested in Tyler and they go to a big party. She gets waisted and tries to seduce Tyler who decides to do the proper thing and not take advantage of her. She blows him off and disappears for a long time. Tyler drives her and her brother home because they are too drunk to walk.Long story short, Tyler gets in trouble for taking pictures of her in various stages of dress.Tyler has issues with his father as well, but I'll leave the rest for you guys to find out.

This is hands down an excellent book. Most Unity books out there are hit or miss. This one is definitely a hit.If I were to say who the target audience is for this book. I would lean more towards the intermediate C# programmer and someone familiar with how Unity works. Although the author provides excellent information on the inner workings of Unity's 2D systems. There isn't much hand holding. The right balance is there for you to not get lost but to also stretch your knowledge at the end of each chapter. The author pretty much encourages the reader to push themselves and take the learned content further.*A dedicated and confident beginner could have a go at the text but prepared to push yourself if you are a newbie coder. It gets pretty heavy at times and that is a good thing!** I also haven't had to look up the errata after going through 3/4's of the book. The instructions are clear, focused, and the code works. Imagine that...For what it is worth this is about as complete of a book you can get on developing a 2D game with Unity. Not only do you walk away with knowing how to approach 2D game development. You're also provided with excellent tips and best practices for architecting your game and additional tips on how to avoid common rookie mistakes.I thoroughly have enjoyed this book thus far. Honestly, I almost passed on it because the base game is an RPG. I'm so glad I didn't pass it up as the knowledge gained is applicable beyond the genre itself.Definitely a joy to read.At the half way mark you'll already have an excellent grasp on how to approach 2D gaming with Unity.If other books have left you scratching your head or you're still lost in the woods. Then this book is your beacon for sure.Ashley. Please write more Unity books. Thank you for this one.

This book requires intermediate programming skills, e.g., implementing a few design patterns.Pros - Intermediate programming topics, e.g., use of delegates, managers, to reduce code complexity. - Use of AssetDatabase to create assets - Saving player's previous position prior entering battle zones - The best: Use of animation states as state machines (matching up states and their corresponding animations nicely)Cons - No architectural diagram. It's difficult to visualize the relationships of the different classes/scripts. I coped by modeling them myself. - It seems that Chapter 10's code isn't as 'clean' as previous chapters. There are long if-else chains which I changed to ternary operators. - No explanation of the CustomAssetUtility which uses generics. It works but I don't know why it works. (Caveat: I'm a C# noob so this is not really an issue for those with years of C# experience) - Runtime error but easy to fix because Unity's error messages are helpful, e.g., checking whether objects in OnGui are null before attempting to use them. - I find the BattleManager bloated but I expect in practice, BattleManager would be further modularized into logical classes. - The Battle Scene is unfinished, e.g., Player can select Dragon to attack but there's no attack animation or counter attack learning (it's left to us to implement those).Wish - I wish the topics re the Editor were replaced with more gameplay related ones, e.g., give more room to complete the Battle SceneI'd still recommend this book as a good buy. It's not perfect but I'm not completely disappointed.

I own the first edition and thought this new second edition would be fully updated. The section on animation only covers Mecanim state machines, even though Unity includes the Anima2D skeletal animation package as part of the standard library. Many of the original chapters are not updated at all, and are even using deprecated calls. They’ve not swapped “typeof” calls with generics. The grammar issues are still legion. For this much money ($55), and this recent of a publication date, I expected to learn. Some of the most important subjects are still glossed over with a few brief paragraphs. Like deploying to consoles, C# delegates, serializing data (to save your game) and events. These are the prime bits of information desperately needed by new Unity developers. I awaited this edition eagerly, as I had assumed more light would be shed this time around. If you’ve got the first edition, search elsewhere. Nothing to see here. But if you haven’t read the first edition, this book is still the best 2D Unity book out there.

I like it, it's a very focused book (2D RPG) and the code is very readable: I can mostly tell what it does just by reading it.It's also a very utilitarian book in nature: every chapter starts with a 1-page explanation as to what you're going to code, 1 or 2 diagrams, the code, and a page for other things you could improve - no long-winded explanation on the industry standards, the focus is on getting to the point - the game. No platforming, no achievements, no multiplayer, just straight up 2D RPG.Note that it shouldn't be your very first book on Unity if you don't have any experience with code as the book will not explain what a script or a function is, or even the difference between a public and a private variable. The book will however explain the differences between similar functions in Unity (ex: difference between Update, LateUpdate, FixedUpdate) depending on their relevance to the project.

This book has typos on almost every single page I've read so far. Also, the images in the book are almost impossible to see as they are either blurry or contain a screenshot that is so high resolution that the text is unreadable. This just stinks of a low effort money grab.

It's great. It has many pictures from Unity to clearly show what to do and a lot of good info about Unity.

I've always had a challenge with vocabulary and the english language in general. I have a hard time remembering peoples names, new vocabulary words and how to spell them. This book was great. The visualization techniques helped a ton, and I wish this book existed a few years ago when I was in school and had to memorize... Well at least I have it now!

You can spend countless hours studyng and reiterating various words and their meanings, but it won't guarantee that it will stick when it comes to taking a test, such as the SAT. This book features various memorization methods that inspire creativity and storytelling that take a completely different approach to vocabulary studying that is used by the best memory athletes and and has definitely helped me in my college exams.

This book has taken my awarness on dealing with new vocabularyWords to a new level. I have decided to learn a new languageand I plan to implement technique's demonstrated in this book.I have read two other books by Luis Angel and love his Styleof writing and teaching techniques.

Luis is a great instructor. He has a great way of taking topics and simplifying them and bringing them to life for the reader/student to comprehend. I'd recommend this book and house other to anyone wanting to improve their memory.

This is a WONDERFUL concordance. Our Pastor required us to get a Strong's Concordance and a Vines Dictionary. So I decided to search Amazon for the books and long behold I came across this awesome book and it had it all in one which is amazing. This book is a size of a school text book. If you are willing to learn of Gods Word even the better. Don't let the size discourage but encourage you to buy. The print is small so for those that have trouble reading small print I would suggest a full page magnifying sheet to make it easier on the eyes. I have ordered several of this book for members of my local congregation as well. I intend on ordering more. I attend a Bible based Christ Center, Holy Ghost led Sabbath Keeping church. Here is where we learn, study and search the Word of God. So this Concordance/Dictionary will help us grow stronger and dig deeper into the Bible.

Do not waste your money on this greatly truncated version of the original full sized Strong's concordance. The paper is embarrassingly cheap and the citations poorly condensed. I know this because I have the full version and compared them side to side.Stick with the original, I immediately returned this one.

Here is a short simple review on (The New Strong's Expanded Exhaustive Concordance of the Bible) (Red-Letter Edition)As a Student of not only the bible, but also the original languages. I must say i am simply amazed at this version of Strongs, and not only the product, but also these sellers. i got it even days before i was supposed to always a plus. that about covers my happiness with the sellers, although i still feel i am not giving them the justice they deserve. but now onto the product itself, it is a hard back which i usually can not stand, but for something even this thick it works. this strongs is done in easy laid out sections. it gives you an introduction, how to use etc, then goes into a concordance of all the words used in the KJV, also other translations as i was suprised a added bonus not mentioned. from the concordance it then goes into the strongs number section of Hebrew, then Greek, respectfully. and yet another awesome bonus not in many Strongs, is not only the words of our Lord in red (although all of the word of God is inspired of course) but the cool addition of some of vines best Definitions of not only the english but also on the hebrew and greek. there is also a complete topical index to the bible i did not know i was getting which is great, a chart of the harmony of the gospels, Teachings and illustrations of Christ,The parables of Jesus Christ, The laws of the bible, Prayers of the bible, the Jewish calendar, Jewish feasts, Monies and weights, New testament monies,Measures of length, Dry measures and liquid measures. for thosee that took the time to read this, thank you and God bless. i was trying to write a review quickly, so i apologize for missing pronunctiation and spacing etc. but wanted to get it all in. what you will get with this awesome addition for pastors, and students alike.in Christbrother Travis.

I was not expecting the text to be so small. I will need a magnifying glass to even read the text so I do no think it will be useful to me because I can't read it.

Be advised that the print font is so small that the only way to make out the writing is with reading glasses AND a magnifying glass. Font is also very light, you would go blind trying to use this book. Very disappointed that this fact was not included in the item description along with a sample of the font. I requested a return after 5 minutes of looking at it. Terrible, should have been 2 volumes.

Hippo Books did not say that this is an edition that does not include Hebrew or Greek and that is not numerically coded for cross-reference. Maybe Hippo Books is ignorant of the requirements of scholarly research or they don't know their product. Caveat emptor. So, not being a Xtian I didn't know this product either (my bibles are in Hebrew and Greek and I have those lexica in my memory- nevertheless this type of "popular edition" version just adds a few steps to my research which I can live with. But this still gets an overall ONE rating for poor product and service. Took an overly and unusual long time to arrive by the way. This version also leaves out articles, clitics, common conjunctions and prepositions-and adverbs- what if I want to look up passages like " 'a' certain man"? That passage when it appears is CRITICAL; in the Hebrew, it reads "ish ehkhad" which is indicative of something VERY significant and history-changing about to happen. The word "ehkhad" ("one") which is omitted from this poor excuse of a watered-down make-it-too-easy agenda of lack of scholarship, is among the 168 words omitted. Further to the point, there are 40 more words like "Moses", "Aaron", "Israel", "holy", son", "servant", "God", "Jesus" and others that are "condensed by retaining the MORE IMPORTANT PASSAGES" [emphasis mine] to the exclusion of others. The words for "Jesus" in the Old Testament are, again, critical to some passages. Avoid this edition. At all costs. This one goes into a box at the back of a closet. Get the heavy, large "exhaustive" concordance instead.

I bought this for my son who is in prison. You might think this is a bad thing, but God has given my son a ministry from the inside out. When God is finished with him he will come out. He has led 10 men to Christ so far. He said it was the best concordance and it has helped him to bring the light to the Gospel in a greater way.Patricia Menville

Nice study aid, i recommend also grabbing an interlinear greek to make it worth it. Packaging was not so great... Corners got dinged up. Overall, a sturdy book. Nice spine. Pages thin, print small, but "flow" well when you're trying to find stuff. Though thin, good for tabs too. Grab a reading magnifying glass and a tilted book stand if you really want to use it for deep study.
